This weekend at the Quad City Classic there was a play that everyone was unsure of the correct call - one out runners on first and third / fly ball to outfield caught for second out / runner on first running on hit never goes back to first base / fielder throws to first base for double play third out / runner on third tags on catch and crossed home plate before double play at first / does run count or does double play end inning?

If the runner on third tagged up and crossed home plate before the first baseman caught the throw from the outfield then the run would count. That is a timing play the runner crossed home before the third out which was not a force play. A force out is when a runner must go to the next base because the batter has became a batter-runner. Since the batter never became a batter runner because he was out on the fly ball, the runner at 1st was not forced to leave the bag. Therefore the play back at first was not a force out.

Why is this call so hard to understand. You mean to tell me the umpire or umpires there neither one knew the correct call? And as many years as most of the players playing why was their a question on the call? Run counts every time if scored before out is made!

Garocket is right. Though most think of this as a force out, it is actually an appeal play.

stever it is an appeal play yes, but most importantly it is a timing play. Did runner cross plate before defense appealed runner not tagging up or tagging bag that runner left early from. Out or not is based on timing.

Not exactly, lb16 • "...Run counts every time if scored before out is made unless the third out is a force out! ... stever • The throw back to 1B in this instance is a "Live Ball Appeal" ...

Dave,

I was basing my answer on BH44 scenario in that situation "run counts every time".

Run scores as you describe the scenario. It's a timing play.
Here's one that happened while I was playing in Columbus, OH this past weekend:
Runner on first, 1 out. Fly ball down the left field line. Our left fielder ran over and made a nice running catch in play but his momentum took him out of play.
Umpire called dead ball and awarded the runner third base. Is this the correct call?

stick... the actual award is 1 base from last base touched when the fielder actually went out of play... if it was his momentum that took him out of play...the award would be 2 bases if in the umpires judgemment he went out of play on purpose... a couple differnt answers come out of this since you didn't explin what the runner did after the ball was hit... if he tagged up and was on 1st base the award should have been 2nd but if the runner had advanced to 2nd without tagging up on the hit before the ball went out of play and stayed there the award would have been 3rd ... but then the defense after the play was over could appeal that the runner didn't tag up ater the catch and the runner would be called out..

Stick,

One umpire told us at meeting at home plate before the game that if ball was caught and fielder stop abruptly and threw ball back in it would be live ball. If he kept on running out of play runners would be awarded one base.

BJ you are correct!! Runner at first was tagging so by rule he is awarded one base. If going out of play is deemed intentional then two bases. The ump told me after the game that she felt the play is just like an overthrow!! Other than that I felt she did a good job.
