Discussion: Factors in defining what a good hitter is
What makes a for a good hitter? Is it:
1)high batting average
2)home run/gap power
3)consistency day in and day out
4)coming thru in clutch situations
5)a combination of some or all the above
Tell the board what you think
Some one who can do it all and you want at the plate when the game is on the line. I have seen some great hitters in Senior ball and when the game is on the line you would not want them at the plate. A consistent of all the abover make a great hitter. But give me the guy who doesn't make outs in the 5th, 6th or 7th inning.
All of the above Stick, plus hitting for the situation, not just clutch for your at bat. Being able to adjust to go opposite field, passing it down to the next batter if you have to just get on and save the HR. Reading the game situation, then do your job for that situation.
So true Dale. I've seen great hitters freeze up in clutch situations. Heck I've been there done that!! Do you think players should take a different approach when coming up in a late inning clutch situation?
Dave that is very good!! Giving yourself up for the team is something many players struggle with. I think we all want to be "the man" but sacrificing for the team can make the difference between winning and losing a 1 run game.
The teammate who seems to always get the clutch hit and is always on base is the definition of a great hitter, BUT as you all know it's the home run hitter that gets all the attention and glory.
I think that many of us have the ability to be a good hitter or we would not be playing at our ages. My experience is that the ones that are most consistent are those that have patience and wait for the pitch that they know is in there zone. Taking one strike is fairly easy but the best hitters may take a second strike just to wait for the one they like. At least on our team; an individual gets just as much attention for getting a single as the ones that hit the HRs; and one that hits a solo HR is not well received. Saying I can't control the ball doesn't cut it. Our coach has been known to say "If you can't control your swing, put the senior bat away and get your ASA bat out!"
Stick, I think a guy who is successful in the late innings and when the game is on the line stays with his strength. If his strength is gap hitting then he should hit the gaps. If his strength is 6 hole then he should hit the 6 hole. Too many times I've seen guys over the years do something totally out of the norm for who they are as a hitter.
One that doesn't need a runner once he reaches base..............
