Discussion: RIP Glenn Thompson

We lost a good Man, Coach, & Father today. For those of you that did or did not know Glenn Thompson, he was a great ambassador to the game of softball and he loved it more than life. I met him about 14yrs ago when he joined the 40's Braves team as a Coach/Sponsor. He took us all under his wing and made sure we all enjoyed what we all loved...SOFTBALL. To use the words of Andrew Lineberger, Glenn would share play by play of past moments and talk you up to others because he was so proud. He always had a postive attitude whether we won or lost and spent his words building you up and never knocking you down. Over the last couple of years he was a part of Stadium coaching many of the same players from the Braves.

Coach, I know you are looking down on all of us and it is a sad day that we lost a Coach/DAD and an amazing person, when we hit the field in the future, we will celebrate your life and talk about all the good times we had with you.

RIP Glenn Thompson

Dave,

It looks like there is some confusion. This is not a DeMarini bat. This is the Elite Sports ONYX Bat.

Discussion: Found Glove in San Clemente

Sorry for the delay in sending this out.

I was playing in a SSCA Marv Tournament the weekend of July 7th in San Clemente. We went to Vista Hermosa Sports Park to do batting practice and I found a glove sitting in the dugout. If you are able to tell me the manufacturer, color or colors, left or right hand etc.... I will be more than happy to send to you.

Discussion: Stealing other teams Softballs

Dave,

Not to question your authority, but that rule applies if SSUSA is supplying the balls. There is no penalty if I decide not to retrieve my own softballs in a prompt manner as long as I have plenty of backups, If you count someone stealing them as a penalty, then yes, I am being penalized.

grayhitter59 & mad dog,

I was waiting for someone to make that kind of comment. I do go retrieve my softballs almost every inning, but there are times I cannot go until the end of the game. I don't always find everyone of them for different reasons. If I am out there and I find other teams softballs, I either turn them in to SSUSA table or if I know the team, I will give it to them directly the next time I see them.

If you find abandoned balls, why would you not turn them into SSUSA? They will make sure the team gets there softballs back. It doesn't make it right to throw them in your practice bucket.

If you go retrieve your HR balls and see a bike that looks abandoned, then later that night you go back there again and the bike is still there and you take it, would that be considered stealing if the real owner saw you with it the next day or month? No, chances are you will pay the penalty for taking it.

Discussion: Stealing other teams Softballs

For those of you who STEAL other teams softballs and blacken out their name and then write your name on them, you are nothing but a LOW LIFE THIEF!!! I am not going to mention team names because they know who they are, but a team threw in 2 balls that had our name blacken out. Only a thief is too stupid to know better. I purchased 3 dozen balls this past weekend in Vegas and returned home with only 5. There is really nothing Senior Softball can do but maybe enforce that if a ball has what appears to be a named blacken out, that it be determined illegal to use.

I must give props to those of you that returned balls to the check-in table. Thank you!!!

Please, if you find another teams ball, it can be turned into the SSUSA table and they will make sure it gets returned to the proper owner.

For those of you that do not know the law and also for those who do not care, I truly hope I can make the last part of the sentence come true for those who decide take what is not yours.

Any person shall feloniously take, steal and carry away any personal property of another under the value of Five Hundred Dollars ($500.00), he shall be guilty of petit larceny and, upon conviction, shall be punished by imprisonment in the county jail not exceeding six (6) months or by fine not exceeding One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00), or both.

Discussion: pitcher getting hit

I have no problem enforcing players in the box. My issue is, you allow the pitcher to stand 6ft further back on the release of the ball which allows the arch of the ball to change. Being a player that has longer legs, if a pitcher is smart and good enough to pitch at a 6ft height and hit the front of the plate, there is no way for me to stay in the box if I want to hit the ball in my zone. I end up reaching for the ball or doing a golf swing. My suggestions, Position the strike-matt behind the plate with the plate not being a strike or move the plate & box back-line 6" back.

Here is the difference from baseball to softball batters boxes:

BB - Box is 3'x 6'
SB - Box is 3'x 7'

Front box line to front tip of plate BB is 27.5"- Strike zone knee to numbers
Front box line to front tip of plate SB is 31" - Strike zone 6ft to 12ft hit any part of the matt.

That is only a 3.5 inch difference. 6.5" were extended in the back.

Over the past couple of years, I've seen so many players being called out for stepping out of the box and at times they did not step out. Judgement call. This should not determine who wins or loses and at times it does. It changes the batter, the game and causes arguments every time.

Please note that I do not disagree with the rule. If you step out of the box, then a rule is a rule, you are out. Protecting a Pitcher needs to be at the highest priority. I just think a change needs to happen.

Discussion: 2018 Dudley Lightning

I have had the chance to swing both the 13" end-load & balance. Both had comparable pop if not more than the previous two models. I felt different than Tri18, as the break in period for me seem to be within a few swings. Line drives hitting the fence and miss hits going 330ft.

I will not compare to other manufactures because to me, all the top senior bats are HOT!!! Players will say this bat is hotter than that bat, but the bottom line, when it comes to the Dudley, Melee, Miken, Worth Wicked & even TPS, its all about comfort level or confidence. The only main true difference is durability.

I highly recommend someone picking this guy up. If Colorado bordered California, he would already be on my roster. He may not be rated, but if I were rating him, he would be Major Plus in my book.

Good luck Jimmy!

Discussion: 40 major plus.. Injured pitcher

He was from Canada. Rully rang his bell, but he seemed to be okay. I was told that he was a Hockey Goalie and was wearing his Hockey helmet which does not have the padding in the front like most wear for softball.

Discussion: Rules on playing down

I believe he is talking about USSSA States this past weekend in Temecula. A player was caught playing both 40's & 50's. These divisions were not playing each other and no where in the rules does it state you cannot play both. It does say you cannot play on two teams in the same division. When the State Director saw that a player was playing both, he stopped the game and forfeited the game. He did not penalize the player, but the whole team.

It was asked many times to show us in the rule book where it says you cannot play two separate divisions, but he could not. He made up his own rules during a sanctioned tournament. Now I am not sure, but if he has the power to make up rules as the game progresses, then I guess he made the right call.

Discussion: Player Ratings

I have read the rules, but when discussed, everyone seems to have a different answer.

Below are a three questions I have on player rating.

1. If a player is rated Major+, will he always be considered a Major+ player as he moves up in different age groups?

2. If a player plays 40 Major+ and turns 50, is he automatically considered a Major Player in 40's?

3. If a player is rated as Major+, but then plays two years in a row in Major division, is he now reclassified as Major?

John,

Why can you not play with Custom Trucking. My understanding of the Border Rule is that you can play for teams where your home State boarders another State. If you live in Arizona, you are allowed to play for a team in Nevada. See Rule Book or SSUSA can verify.

Dave,

My apologies. My intentions were not to criticize the job you do or anyone else within the Senior Softball Staff. I know it is hard to please everyone and I appreciate all the hard work that is put into organizing tournaments. Sometimes the way someone expresses them-self in an email can be misunderstood.

If there is a next time I need to express myself, I will not be so anxious to hit the send button and instead, review my words.

Thank you again for all the hard work and see you out on the field!!!
