Topic: Rules of the game
Discussion: Is a check-swing or deliberate half-swing legal?

The only thing in the rule book I could find after a quick look that addresses this in SSUSA is this rule.

7.6 Batter is Out
E. When the batter bunts or chops the ball, or does not take a full swing when
deliberately hitting a pitched ball.

The definition of full swing isn't given but your description by strict interpretation would not be a full swing. I doubt someone would call this an out in a game though.

Discussion: The go nowhere softball

We used the TCBs a lot before games where there was limited space and time for some BP before games. It makes BP go a lot quicker and less energy is used shagging. They are heavier and some people just don't like hitting them because of the "feel". Another option is the SKLZ Limited Flight practice softball. They are basically a larger wiffle ball made with more flexible material. Here is the link where you can find those https://www.amazon.com/SKLZ-Limited-Flight-Practice-Baseball-Softball/dp/B00N0NGU7G/ref=asc_df_B015CK4JAO/?tag=&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312053899906&hvpos=1o4&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17372819702150975324&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9022906&hvtargid=pla-383917371508&ref=&adgrpid=62421705992&th=1

Discussion: Hitting Nets

I want to buy a net that I can use for hitting softballs off of my tee into in my yard. Any recommendations for a good durable net? Any help would be appreciated. If you recommend one, let me know what you like about it and any minuses it has. I'm looking for something with a quick set up and tear down and not one that would remain set up.

Discussion: Two Umpires make opposite call on same play

Stick - If the umpire called time during the middle of the play, wouldn't that override what you believed might happen if you hadn't called time. I don't think you can award the second run after he called time. I agree that common sense tells you the run would score but I don't think anything can happen after time is called. Having said that, it's crazy that the umpire actually called time.

Discussion: Is it a double play

Tomar: What everyone is trying to say is that the runner at first did in fact tag up. The tag up occurred after the ball struck the pitchers foot (when ball was originally touched). By rule, that is a legal tag up and runner can advance at his own risk. When the ball was caught has nothing to do with it. Hope that makes sense.

Hard to believe 2 site directors agreed with that call. That doesn't make sense.

Runner on 2B is not out when touched by the ball after the pitcher touches it. I believe Stick and BJ have it right (as usual).

Discussion: How does it work

Home runs doesn't necessarily make a team major or not. We won 50 major a few years back with a team that rarely used all of the home runs. We were consistent hitters and exceptional defense. The metric that really matters when it comes to offense is runs scored as said previously. More home runs can lead to more total runs but not always.

We got moved up to Major Plus the following year and got our rear ends handed to us. I think a lot of the problem was our players trying to hit home runs on 350' fields when that wasn't our game and we weren't capable of doing that. There was no way we were going to out HR a M+ team. I found it a little easier to get hits because there was more room to get line drives down in the outfield and gaps were bigger. I have a lot of respect for those that can and do play at that level. It's a big jump up in talent for sure.

I guess I missed some previous dialogue and the question got hijacked :). Thanks for responding lb16. It seems like if that were a rule, you would never have a rundown situation.

Discussion: Ruling on Run Down

I was playing in a SSUSA tournament this weekend and had a situation occur where I disagree with the umpire's ruling on a play and would like some input from all of the rules gurus on here. I was the runner on first and our batter hit a ground ball to the second basemen who was playing just about in the baseline. The 2nd basemen fielded the ball cleanly and once I saw that, I stopped. As the 2nd baseman approached me to tag me, I retreated a few steps towards first hoping that I could delay the tag enough to where he couldn't turn a double play. When the 2nd baseman went to tag me, I hit the ground and he missed the tag by about 6 inches. He then threw to first too late to make that play and I advanced to second because no one was covering that bag. I was ruled out by the umpire which I accepted at the time because it was pool play and there was one umpire so it's tough to expect him to see what happened from that distance. I learned after the game though that when asked, the umpire said that I was ruled out because a retreated. The only thing that I see in the rule book is in Section 8.3 (H) which deals with Batter/Runner is Out. It states, "When he moves back toward home plate to avoid or delay a tag by a fielder. The ball is dead, the batter-runner is out and all runners return to the base occupied at the time of the pitch. That doesn't seem to apply to the runner on first.

I believe that if the umpire didn't believe that I was tagged, I should have been ruled safe at 2nd base. Let me know what you think.

Discussion: Midwest Championships

I would reiterate what Bob21 said with one addition. The outfields are the worst that I've played tournament ball on anywhere I have been to play in the past 20 years. The condition of those fields is unacceptable. Not only do you get a large volume of bad hops which hit you in all kinds of places you don't want to be hit but they are extremely hard on knees and ankles because of all of the ruts. The grounds crew did all that they could to make the infields nice but there's nothing anyone can do to help the outfields at this point. I'm surprised to not see more complaints here about that.

Shout out to the 55 Major teams TX Rock N Legends and Pope Transport. Good people and good teams. It was fun playing you both even though you handed our rear ends to us. Hope to see you again down the road.

I would concur with Coop on one thing. If the 55M was going to be a round robin of only 4 games, teams should have been told that. We would likely have chosen to play in a different tournament had we known that. Same money but less games.

And I'm sure it will rain on that weekend as well. That seems to be another tradition for the Brickyard. We joke about it every meeting at the beginning of the year when we schedule tournaments. Hopefully we'll all catch a break this year with the weather there. Enjoy the 2019 season!

Discussion: How do you like the 1 n 1 count?

I have to agree with DC Pete. As an outfielder, it drove me nuts on hot days watching every batter take the first pitch whether or not it was a meatball or a ball. Most batters had no intention of swinging at the first pitch. It's a complete waste of time. It's also clear based on facts provided by SSUSA and my personal experience that more games are played to the full seven innings. Good luck in Vegas to all.
