Jan. 22, 2023 TimMcElroy | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: 4 Game or 5 Game Guarantee?? Original question- Are brackets changing from three game guarantee to double elimination style? Answer- Yes. In a 4gg event, the standard format would be 2 seed games with teams advancing to a double elimination bracket. |
Jan. 22, 2023 TimMcElroy | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: 4 Game or 5 Game Guarantee?? wdodge22- My understanding is that the SSUSA World Championships will continue on as a 5gg event. |
Jan. 20, 2023 TimMcElroy | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: 4 Game or 5 Game Guarantee?? In addition to working at SSUSA hosted events, I also host a number of my own tournaments each year. Costs are up for nearly everything and change of some kind is required to remain profitable. I'm speaking for myself here but suspect SSUSA is experiencing something similar. Park rental costs, travel costs, ball costs, awards costs, shipping costs, staff labor costs- Most of these increased AFTER 2022 entry fees were posted. I had to eat the diminished margins (and sometimes outright losses on tournaments). It's a good bet that SSUSA's move from 5gg to 4gg had as much to do with getting a handle on expenses as anything else. Looking at the softball landscape it appears that SSUSA isn't alone on this one. I've seen other Associations offer fewer games, increased entry fees or both for 2023. |

Dec. 15, 2022 TimMcElroy | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: 2023 TOC Couple of comments from a guy that has been working at SSUSA's Tournament of Champions for longer than the ISSA season opener has existed. In it's 17th year of partnering with Polk County / Central Florida Sports, the SSUSA Tournament of Champions has been held in February 16 times. 16 of the 17 events have been played in early February with the lone exception coming in 2021. If you're looking for a reasonable explanation, here you go- Super Bowl LV in Tampa. Keeping the traditional dates would have presented a financial hardship for TOC participants that needed to book airfare, hotels and rental cars. Roughly 6 years ago, ISSA began holding it's own tournament in Florida. They gave it a similar name, scheduled it a few weeks prior to the SSUSA event, offered it in the next town over and even incorporated many of the same attractions (skills challenges, all-star games, Wounded Warriors). Just 1 year ago, ISSA moved it's tournament into February. It's unclear why they chose to do so, or why they chose to schedule it on top of the FHC 60s tournament (Feb 5-6, 2022). In my view, there is a pattern here. Asking SSUSA to justify how or why it plans the Original Tournament of Champions the way it does is short sighted in my view. These questions should be asked of the other guy. |
Nov. 30, 2022 TimMcElroy | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Radisson Airport Hotel Phoenix, Winter Worlds Summary: There was a mistake on your bill. When made aware of the issue, the hotel staff looked into the matter and made the necessary adjustments. Was there any benefit to putting the hotel (our partner) on blast in a public forum then labeling the staff as "stupid"? Answer: No. |
Nov. 22, 2022 TimMcElroy | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: 11 Players For 65 Brackets Perhaps, people could work on hitting the 4 hole if the middle man is favoring the SS side of the bag. Perhaps, people could work on hitting balls down the lines. "Work at it to stay on top" - your words, not mine. |
Nov. 20, 2022 TimMcElroy | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Session 1 Results Winter Worlds I was the TD for Winter Nationals. With the hurricane and daily doses of sideways rain there were multiple changes to the schedules, including some on notebook paper. At the end, I dropped a discombobulated file in the mail while sprinting to the airport for a Sunday night flight to PHX. Not an excuse. I'm just letting you know why you aren't seeing the info you're looking for (yet). Tim |

Nov. 14, 2022 TimMcElroy | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Winter National results All things considered, we made out pretty well. THUR play was washed out, but we played extra rounds on TUE & WED to get ahead. Divisions that weren't completed on the field were played through the winner's bracket final. Fields were ready to go FRI afternoon until a 1pm rain dump got us. We were able to get 60 AAA going later that afternoon. SAT was a massive undertaking- 11 rounds of games (5 inning games) to get us caught up. SUN games were played at regulation time. In the end, all teams in S2 played the 5gg that was advertised. |

Oct. 14, 2022 TimMcElroy | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Courtesy Runner Rule Question I understand running for Bench, but why would the Say Hey kid need a courtesy runner? Anywho... You could set your lineup as describedt, using players off the bench as CRs only. The CRs just couldn't run more than 1x per inning. |

Oct. 11, 2022 TimMcElroy | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: 11 Players For 65 Brackets We could nit pick this thing to death... Last year the 65s played with 10 on defense, this year they played with 11. Last year they hit with The Rock ball, this year they hit the Baden ball.... TooOldToFight- I took the bait and did the research you asked for- 2021 data 65 AAA seeding play data from Las Vegas (10 defenders)- > 18% of games resulted in 1 team scoring less than 10 runs. > 7% of games resulted in 2 teams scoring (a total of) less than 20 runs. . 2022 data 65 AAA seeding play data from Las Vegas (11 defenders)- > 7% of games resulted in 1 team scoring less than 10 runs. > 36% of games resulted in 2 teams scoring (a total of) less than 20 runs. Again- a small sample size but early returns don't appear to suggest that an 11th defender causes a drop in offensive output. Going to 11 defenders certainly didn't impact the 65s participation numbers as we had 71 teams in 2021 & 2022. I'm a rules committee member and don't see anything in those numbers suggesting that the committee got it wildly wrong. |
