Midwest Championships
Is there any chance of rescheduling the Midwest Championships to something later in the year? The weather in KC in April is pretty crappy for playing softball historically. The Cowtown was held then and there have been plenty of times I've had to scrape ice of the windshield before heading to the ballpark from the hotel. Also broke a few bats since it was so cold. Nice complex but if the price for playing there is having an important tournament in April, that's a mistake. I quit playing in the Cowtown...now it looks like I'll vote against that one when we make our team schedule.

Hi Doug ... Sorry I missed this one and it slipped by ... It's highly unlikely that the date will change after it's been published ... There are a lot of other "dominos" in the line, so it's not as simple as it may initially seem ... Hopefully the weather will be acceptable, and we hope you will provide us with an update after it ends ... Thanks for your insights and good luck this Season ...

STL0,

I'd love to know the thought process of HQ when it comes to tourneys. The last several years they tried the Windy City Classic in early April in Chicago, it' kept getting canceled because lack of interest because it's too damn cold still. Now they move the Northern Championships from MI to even further North in MN a week earlier. Teams that has been getting in it from IL, IN, WI, MI who were the majority of the teams that made up the paritipation. 27 out of 38 teams that got in last year were from 4 states I listed. The rest were from OH and ON,C. Talking with multiple managers from IL, IN and MI they won't even consider making that drive in April with a huge chance of rainout.

Thanks for the reply, Dave. It looks like my team wants to play in the Midwest Championships so I'll be able to provide some feedback whether I like it or not :). I know scheduling isn't easy and there are a lot of factors involved. I would just prefer to play important tournaments at a time where the probability of good weather is a little higher. My only point was that I think most would take a lesser complex and better weather if the decision was made based on a new complex being available. The question was somewhat rhetorical because I know nothing will change once you publish the schedule for the year.

I appreciate what you all do for us old farts still trying to play this game. Have a great Thanksgiving and hope 2024 brings you and the staff there the best.

I know of a dozen teams that wont make that drive to the Northern Championships even if the weather was guaranteed, as you know John another association is taking that weekend in Kalamazoo Michigan and it will fill up with those teams that aren't making a 10 hour drive plus when they can drive 1 to 2 hours or less! Another loss for SSUSA and it's Midwest members!

Rob64,

A little common sense goes a long way. Have no idea why this would have been moved. A quick scan of the Ratings page shows there are 8 total 50's MN teams and 6 I've never seen play ever and it looks like 4 haven't played in a tourney in 4 years.

JohnO28,

The thought process is $$$, Minnesota was the highest bid to SSUSA to hold the tournament. The problem for Minnesota is drawing teams to get their money back they paid SSUSA and doing it in May. I would guess out of the 38 teams from last year the 2 from Minnesota will play each other best 2 out of 3 for the Championship!

MAY 2022 HIGH 46 degrees
MAY 2023 HIGH 52 degrees

Re: Who's going:
I'd say most of the Omaha teams will go (probably a 50AAA, 50M, 55AAA, 60 AA and 60M, 65,s and 70s). We usually went to the Cow Town in KC, which is always a crapshoot on weather. It's been 70 and it's been snowed out. Backing this up two weeks in April isn't perfect, but should be ok. I understand a brand new complex with turf near the Legends in KCK. Even if it's in April, it beats the dumps we played at in Rogers and St. Louis.

Bob21,

How many teams would that be? Honest question, a quick scan of 50 55 and 60s ratings on the SSUSA website shows a total of 6 teams combined for those 3 age groups.

Yes, probably 6 in those divisions. The older guys as well. I'm certain the teams from Kansas City (and St Louis) will attend since it's in their backyard and Midwest players have been asking for this to be moved (back) to Kansas City for several years. Several Scrap Iron teams also make appearances in KC. I'd expect the Iowa Demon teams would also be there.
I think we'd all agree later in the Spring or Summer would be ideal but it is what it is...

JohnO28,

I didn't have a problem with the Northern Championships traveling to other locations, but the time of year didn't need to be changed. August in the Great Lakes area is always warm/hot. End of April / beginning of May....way to unpredictable. Usually, still around mid 40's-50's. Our team won't be traveling to Northern Championships this year because of that fact. Traveling isn't cheap and we don't want to chance the weather. As you mentioned, we didn't understand the thought process in changing to April / May. I would like to play a tournament in Minneapolis, but not that early in the year. Hopefully in years to come, they will get it rescheduled for some time in August, as it has been for about the last 20 years(??)
