Discussion: TX STATE CHAMPIONSHIP-TOC QUALIFIER

SSUSA decision to move the TX State Championship to Austin is to be commended, a great city and softball complex (Krieg) that can accommodate lots of teams. According to the SSUSA website, 65's, 70's, 75's, 80's, & 85's divisions are scheduled to play for (3) days, June 22-24.

Krieg Softball Complex: http://www.austintexas.org/listings/krieg-fields/5787/
Directions: http://www.mitcharf.com/mitcharf/softball/krieg.html
Note: going east on Riverside, Turn left onto Lakeshore Blvd, do not go all of the way
to Pleasant Valley Rd.

I have found the best rates for hotels is in South Austin. LA Quinta at Oltorf/35 has a rate
of $79/night for a double or queen.

what i want to know...why do we need 3 days to do 3-6 team brackets.....not to great for the pocketbook......but hey guess no one cares about that part......
I'm glad that the TX State Championship was moved out of Houston. The Houston Sportsplex gave Houston Players a bad name. We told TX Half Century that the complex was terrible but it was advertised by them as being terrific.

8 seasons ago I played at Krieg in Austin and it was a dump. Has it had a makeover... ?

I have spent a lot of time in Austin and found it to be the most expensive city in Texas and very difficult to ge around in. To compound things, there's someone who has been throwing rocks at cars from overpasses on I35. I can't agree with Capt. Kirk that Austin is a great city.
There are (11) softball fields at Krieg Field, I don't know how many of these fields that are to senior softball specs, but the City has upgraded these fields recently:
http://austin.playnakid.com/location/2999
The traffic can get congested on I35, once you are there, the frontage road/surface streets are best way to get from your hotel to the fields. The rock thrower seems to be operating between 2 A.M.- 5 A.M. Krieg softball fields are a major upgrade from where were playing at the Houston Sportsplex.
I personally like the (3) day tournament format for the older
players.
Capt Kirk
the fields have been great to play on for the last 10 years.....thats how long i have lived in texas......and they redid them just a few yrs back......as for playing 3 days with no more than 6 teams in a bracket...that is completely ridicules.....when we get to vegas for worlds we do 3 days for way bigger team brackets....and with all the fields they have for tx states that should be no problem for a 2-day tourney......
Maybe the Austin C of C has had conversations with their counterparts in St. G!
Capt. Kirk and Mad Dog, Thanks for giving me an update on the fields at Krieg. Sounds good.

The word on the street is that more teams have signed up to play in the TX State Championship (60+) than ever. Hopefully there will be enough teams for every age group/rating, Looking forward to it. Capt Kirk
mad dog ... I wouldn't use the term "great" to describe the fields at Krieg ... They are adequate.
#19 ..way better than the houston complex...so that would kick austin into the great section......compared to most they are above avgerage for play....unless you guys have destroyed them already....LOL......
well gots to love it....we have a 4 team bracket (65AA) for texas states and ssusa has decided we need 3 days to do it....really......come on....so we now get to pay for an extra day of hotel's.....and oh we are the big bracket for the 65's....the other's are a 2 team...and 3 team....yep 9 teams total for 65's......and the 70-75's have just 9 teams....this complex is an 11 field complex.......why.......
dog ... Why? ... It's a field geometry issue ... Kreig/Austin won't allow us to play any games after 2:00 PM starts due to Local League restrictions on eight of the 11 usable fields (#5-7 are unsuitable due to short fence distances) ... Having lateral flexibility isn't a good fit because of vertical limitations ... Two days is "theoretically" doable if you don't mind playing three (or four) games in five game slots on Day 1 and five in a row on Day 2 for the bracket ... That's a health and safety issue for the 70+ and 75+ teams ... Temps are projected to be in the 90's and rain is (almost always) a Texas reality this year, so a limited amount of flexibility is a plus ... The third day doesn't do us any favors either due to increased field lease and other costs ...

Session #2 is the real problem, with no field restrictions on Saturday, but the same short schedule on Sunday ... We have 40 teams on the weekend and have requested adding the Bob Havins Fields (5) to make it fit ... Without those fields, the Saturday schedule will likely be 7:30 AM thru 10:30 PM game times, and likely format modifications .. Session #2 will run three days next year ... Having a 26% increase in the number of teams entered is the reason ... I'm scheduled to be there, so look me up and we can talk more if you wish ...

Dave, the biggest problem I see is the need to play 4 seeding games in 65 Gold before starting DE. Two maybe 3 but 4 is over kill, when two are against 65AAA teams.
JBTexas ... With an odd number of teams in a 3-game seeding, one team is required to play their fourth game so another gets their third ... If your team volunteers to play that "exhibition" game, I can eliminate ONE game in your seeding pool ... Playing that one additional game with the other two teams makes it a fair and balanced seeding games demand for all three teams ... Let me know if you're willing to be the "Exhibition" team and I can drop the other one ... Thanks ...
Point taken but still don't like it , two games is enough. Making the 70-75 play four seeding games is just plain crazy. Good luck with that in our heat with that move.
still left with 8 fields....you say 5-7 are to short...why then is 3 being used.....we still can play 4 games on the last day...would rather we do it when fresh...like first day then that........there can only be a max of 9 games played total by any team and that is if ya lose your first elim game and come back and play in the double dip game......and why book venues we can't fully use also.......why...
Dave Dowell, if I see you at one of the local drinking establishments, I will buy you a drink or two for setting up the 65 AA seed/bracket games that takes into account that we are 65+, great job!. We played in the Austin Shootout on Saturday, it was hot and humid and after playing (3) games you could have stuck a fork in mad dog, we were done!
Capt Kirk
dog ... #5 and #6 are both about 270-275' to CF with a common fence .. #7 is about 245' to a common fence with #8 ... #3 is about 285' and appears to have a taller fence that would make it "play longer" ... But to make you a little less grumpy (if that's possible), I just moved the games from #3 to #4 on Wednesday, even though you'll walk further to get to #4 than the extra 10-15' or so of OF distance! ... See you there!
well hell dave since your in such a good mood....how about putting us on fields 1&2 for the entire tourney.....they both are 300' fields.....will make it very easy for us old guys to remember where we play......oh and potty close by.....as you do say 5-7 are not real good fields for mens play.....field 3 is just ok...and yes it has a high fence at 285'....but with 65 and older on it this past weekend seen plenty of balls go over....
Since the TX State Championship (44 teams in 2015, 58 teams in 2016) has increased by a +14 teams, Austin sb the permanent home for the Texas State Championship. Scheduling all future games at Krieg fields will require staring the tournament earlier in the week. What about the 40's teams, are there any plans to have a 40's division in the future?
Capt Kirk
Earlier are you crazy, starting Wednesday now. Key is getting Austin to give up all the fields all day instead of having to stop for league. If someone wants the business should be able to schedule around one week in June, if not need to look somewhere else again. But that said we have the same problem in Reno, Vegas,Georgetown etc. Places want us but won't adjust league schedules to allow full use of they fields, so we have to work around they schedules.
Earlier, are you crazy, probably. Chill out, it is father's day. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow, Del Griffith (John Candy) in Planes, Trains, & Automobiles.
Capt Kirk
but hey we at least get to spread it out over 3 days for 4 teams(65AA),3 teams (65M),2 teams (65AAA).....also total of only 9 teams for the 70/75 group.......
Well Bob, we don't want us oldsters playing too many games in one day (that's what the company line is selling).
HOWEVER, in the 65 Majors (3 teams) one of the three teams will have to play 4 games between 8AM and 3:30PM on Thursday. Looks like the temps are forecast to be in the mid nineties. So much for that...

DoubleL10, and one of those is totally meaningless game at 9:30 AM against a AAA team. But we have nothing else to do that day.
yeah larry...its only tourney ball why get in shape to play more than a couple games a day......on our last day(fri) 1 team could play 4 games in our bracket larry...mmmm guess they messed up on that scheduling.......but hey we get to spend for 3 nites instead of 2 for lodging and eating......JB meaningless....games...that never happens.....
Bob, we are all waiting on your let's get physical video, see you in Austin, good luck, except when you are play against us.
Capt Kirk
Can anyone post results of the State
tournament ? If we wait on on Texas to do we'll be to old to care.
And maybe the Heart of Texas that was held in May/

a

Wingfoot .. The results are on the Texas State Championships tournament page of this website ...

P.S. - Your {enter} key on your computer is seriously stuck!

60AAA played in Del Valle at Southeast Memorial Park. No concessions and two port-a-potties that needed to be emptied, to say the least.

Fences were 330. Outfield grass was horrible and the ground hard as concrete. Infield dirt went just a few feet past the bases. Many infielders had to play on the grass part that been planted to probably accommodate the field for 60 ft. bases instead of the 70 ft. bases we use.

Additionally, there really wasn't anything close to the park to stay or go eat. If Houston was worse than this park you have my heartfelt sympathy.

Our start times for Saturday were 8:00 AM, 11:00 AM for pool games. We then went to bracket games with our next game being at 5:00 PM.

We started Sunday at 9:00 AM and played our final game at 10:30 AM. Better scheduling in the future would probably help.

Gotta love it!
