Spring Worlds
Any idea on when the brackets will be out for Spring Worlds?
Just curious since some of our players would prefer not to drive the canyon between St George and Mesquite every day and would like to know if we are scheduled for St. George or Mesquite fields.

Thanks and good luck to all.

I hope SSUSA is reading the post on the "baseball size" fields in Bullhead City. When drawing up the schedule for the 70's in Mesquite please take into consideration to NOT use the two Baseball diamonds. Last year we played two on the upper diamond at Pioneer and one at "large' field at Hunter.

It was ridiculous to watch 70 year old outfielders (I ain't one of them) chasing balls an extra 50-75 feet that were hit in the gaps. It is exhausting and "unhealthy" to expect 70 year old's to play in "baseball" sized diamonds without a 300ft temporary fence!

If they're aloud 11 Fielders (?), maybe those teams should consider playing 6-Man Outfield if they're truly that slow in covering the Gaps!?

JDub, you are looking to play with a 55 team, so I am going to presume you have no idea how "relative" the term "slow" is to a seventy year old!

Also, a 6 man outfield would leave a 3 man infield.

Come On JDub, their 70 years old
! Man we all are lucky to still be able to play. No need to kill the guys that are in their 70's, I heard of "leaving it all on the field" but making 70+ years old play on that baseball field is SENIOR ABUSE!

Whatever happen to the plan to build this STATE OF THE ART SOFTBALL COMPLEX in Mesquite? that was the reason the winter worlds started in Mesquite!

If this stands those of us who made our reservations in Mesquite, (because we were ASSURED we were playing in Mesquite) must now make the 30 mile drive to St George. Perfect, just perfect!!!!!!!

E4/E6,

SSUSA is pretty consistent in alternating St. George and Mesquite for this tournament, meaning that if you played in St. George last year (which the 60's did) then it's only logical that you'd be in Mesquite this year (which you are). I understand things can change, but as a rule they've been pretty damn consistent.

I know that this doesn't help you and your team at this point, although you could check hotels in St. George and still cancel your rooms in Mesquite...so long as you haven't prepaid for them. SSUSA also suggests booking rooms in both locations until assignments are released. Easier said than done, but now you know. Good luck to you and your team.

We are a 65 this year Tony. Staff has explained the issues this year and due to an increase in teams we are moving to St George. It happens.
Staff is right, the drive can be almost majestic........

ALLPRO,

I was being a little Facetious about Playing 6-Man Outfield! However, with 11 Fielders there are still 4 Infielders. Who are you Discounting as an Infielder - the Pitcher?
Heck, back in da day when we were short 2 guys I'd Pitch and cover 2B. But that was then ! ! !

JDub, 6 outfielders, plus a pitcher and catcher, leaves 3 infielders to play 4 positions. Enjoy our banter, stay healthy. I want you to experience playing when your 70!

Sure enough our first game is on the VERY LARGE baseball diamond at Hunter Park (#3)!!! Hopefully, they will be using the temporary 300ft fences.

Every 70 year old I've talked is concerned about this!

Sadly, I've just found out that there will be no temporary fences at Hunter Park due to the difficulty with "punching out" the holes to secure a temporary fence in the Artificial Turf of the Baseball field.

Guess we'll just have to "grin and bear" it. Good Luck to all you outfielders!

Jeff, I will be at Anthem this weekend if you need details. Playing with Chain Link.
SSUSA, anyone playing on the baseball field is ridiculous, let alone the 70's!

Gary, I guess I won't be playing in the Mesquite tournament next year when I'm eligible to play up with you REAL senior guys! I can't cover the gaps on a 300 foot field now let alone a baseball field!
I Would suggest SSUSA (if they don't already have them scheduled) have EMTs at those huge fields where the 70s are to play.

skid7, not in the rule book. Whomever was scheduled to play on irregular dimension fields this large was not dealt a fair hand. SSUSA traditional field size is 300' fences, as it is also in other associations. It's what we play. I suspect teams sent in their $525 expecting to play on a traditional size field. In this instance, the 70's got games "stuck" there, certainly not by request. Perhaps another venue needs to be considered for this great event.

Double10.........You are one of the very few who can reach those fences with your bat; I know, I've served up a few monsters to you!!!! You are correct though, way to much space to patrol.....

Here's a bit of background about the Mesquite facilities ... This year's event marks the seventh consecutive year the Spring World's have been scheduled at Hunter and Pioneer Parks, so the field layout shouldn't come as a big surprise to anybody who has been there before ... The configuration of the fields has not changed over that time, with two standard softball fields and one larger multi-use baseball field at each complex ...

This year, in response to (valid) criticism we received last year about games going too late in Session #1, we secured The Canyons Complex yesterday (Tuesday) for this year's event, and had to relocate one division (65-AAA) later than we would have preferred ... We could have moved more, but this late in the game, we decided to minimize any inconvenience that comes with driving about 45 minutes to play at one of the finest dirt and grass complexes in the country ...

Next year we intend to expand the Session #1 involvement in St. George, but until and unless teams are willing to either play later daily or express less resistance to playing in St. George, there are going to be games scheduled on the larger fields at Hunter and Pioneer Parks ... It's a simple field requirements supply/demand issue ...

Curveball, know it's not in the rule book. There is times adjustments need to be made. I would think if older teams thought it was a good idea to add a outfielder due to health or safety issues that it could be done. Common sense has to come into play at times. I think it would make for a better game.

Older teams don't want the 11th man at the upper levels as you indicate skid. That extra person came about years ago when talent level was quite a bit lower than today's talent. Idea was to involve more players in the game. Don't think it had anything to do with health or safety.
Whose common sense? Next you'll be advocating a 9 man team for the 50's playing only 3 outfielders(they are younger, stronger, and healthier). That would also make for a better game.

"There is times adjustments need to be made" If you think your age group would enjoy playing at baseball distance fields, get your a$$ to the national meeting at the end of the year and let your feelings be known. Perhaps you could make a difference. Personally, I think you are in the minority on your thoughts.

SSUSA Staff Hunter has only 1 field that is very close to standard. The field with the fence by the freeway is very short, 275' at best.

Don't feel bad we were told we would play in mesquite(50's) when we signed up then low and behold we get stuck in st. george and no rooms in st george as of friday nite, thanks senior softball. All the guys made reservations in mesquite now we get the approx 60 plus mile or so round trip for 3 days. First and last time I play in this tournament. I looked at the fields up there on google earth and there doesnt look like there is enough parking, am I right, do we need to stake a claim to a spot thursday nite for the weekend?....How about some gas money SSUSA?

I would bet that SSUSA would give your team enough to pay for the extra gas, if your team would give SSUSA the money your team saved on Motel Rooms. I would think SSUSA would come out ahead 3-4 hundred

Can't say I'd ever describe playing at the Canyons complex as "being stuck in St. George" - one of the nicest facilities I've ever played in and I find the drive kind of relaxing with some spectacular scenery.
