April 5, 2021 MurrayW | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Total Knee Replacement.."A Softball Athlete's 3 month Video Diary" Sm 165 Bogie, it sounds like your recovery was similar to mine. I am 66 and right-handed. I had my right knee replaced 3 years ago and last December I had my left knee replaced. I was out hitting mid-January with about 110 degrees of flexion. I played in my first tournament at the end of February and my flexion was 126 degrees then. I still have a little pain when I run, but hitting-wise I am back to 100%. If anyone needs one but is hesitant I highly recommend you not wait any longer. It has made a big difference in my quality of life outside of softball and has enabled me to continue playing. |
April 3, 2021 MurrayW | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Intentional walk used to nulify a dominate hitter. Intentionally walking the opposition, even if it isn't their best hitter, will draw their attention. In league play years ago, playing with a 50-minute time limit, there was a batter that would take until he got two strikes, and after every pitch, he would step out and go through a long process of adjusting everything and then asking for timeout when he got into the box. He probably took about 5 minutes off the clock every game, which often meant we played one inning less. We started intentionally walking him every time he came up. After the 3rd time, he started begging us to pitch to him, and from that point on, he didn't take forever to get ready to hit. |
Nov. 19, 2020 MurrayW | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Hitting a pitch that bounces on the plate I think it was answered. The ball cannot be legally swung at by the batter so it would be a strike out even if I hit it over the fence. |
Nov. 19, 2020 MurrayW | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Hitting a pitch that bounces on the plate There have been a few times when my first strike I take hits the front of the plate and bounces straight up and I have jokingly taken a swing after it hits the plate and intentionally miss the ball. If the ball hit the front of the plate with 2 strikes and bounced up, if I swung and hit the ball would it be in play or is it strike 3. |

March 12, 2020 MurrayW | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Refund for spring worlds If you are 65 but playing on a 60, 55, and 50 team will you still be allowed to play in a tournament with one of the younger teams? Asking for a friend! 😊 |
Feb. 24, 2020 MurrayW | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Fielders choice or sacrifice No, a fielder's choice counts as an out and not as getting on base. If you go by on-base percentage, the batter would be 0 for 1 on this at-bat. Also true for errors, but most softball teams I know count errors as getting on base and not against you on OBP so that there are no arguments on whether a batted ball is a hit or an error. |

Feb. 18, 2020 MurrayW | Topic: Bats Discussion: New Dudley Bats Dudley has a balanced two-piece bat in testing. I hit with it a few weeks ago. I prefer and end load bat but this bat was very hot. Lasted around 600-700 swing. Hopefully, they will put this into production soon. |
Dec. 2, 2019 MurrayW | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Rotator Cuff Surgery I had rotator cuff surgery along with relocating my biceps tendon and cleaning up some bone spurs 5 years ago on my right (throwing) shoulder. It only hurt when I threw and I could hit and do everyday activities with no problems. Like you, I thought about becoming a left-hander...for one day! I researched it a little and realized that I would have to do thousands of throws to make throwing left-handed seem natural. You know, that whole 10,000 hours of practice thing! After the surgery and rehab, the pain went away when throwing. The one problem I have had is that I think it is too tight and I have limited external rotation when I cock my arm to throw a ball which limits the distance I can throw from the edge of the dirt at 3rd to first. Fortunately, I have old slow guys running to 1st base! Good luck with whatever decision you make. |
Nov. 22, 2019 MurrayW | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: 65s to 1-1 or not 1-1 It's slow pitch softball. How bad can the next strike be to hit? But I agree, no matter if I get 2 or 3 strikes, I will hit the first pitch that I see in the zone where I hit the ball the best. |
Oct. 28, 2019 MurrayW | Topic: Bats Discussion: Price gouging Yeah, what r4pitch said. No one is forcing you to buy one of their bats and the free market will let them know if they are pricing them too high. There are lots of bats out there to choose from so it is not like they are a monopoly and the only vendor you can buy from. As someone who cracked about 10 bats this year, I would be willing to pay more for a bat with a warranty. It would be like getting a two for one deal. |
Oct. 25, 2019 MurrayW | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Legal roster? Why not play 50 major with these friends? Why do 10 major players want to play on a AAA team? Are the 3 that are turning 55 going to be playing on a 55 major team? I think that they may still be carrying their 50 major status when playing 50 since that is what they last played at. Maybe after two years of exclusively playing 55 major they would be eligible to play on a 50 AAA team without counting against the number of major players allowed IF they hadn't been playing 50 major in those 2 years. |

Aug. 26, 2019 MurrayW | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: vegas Dave, I'm fine with you putting the 60 Major at BLD, but not the 60 Major Plus. After all, it's all about me! :) |
Aug. 25, 2019 MurrayW | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: vegas No, please don't put 55 Major on those short BLD fields. |
May 22, 2019 MurrayW | Topic: Women's softball Discussion: SO CAL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS - Women’s 50s Major @LilUte34, I just used 10 teams to make the bracket math easier. In the 60 Major Plus in Vegas a few weeks ago there were 3 teams (but 1 team dropped out when it got to bracket play) and we played 3 days. For Reno this coming week, there are 2 Major Plus 65 teams and we are playing that in two days, but it is on a Tuesday and Wednesday and I had already made my reservations to fly out on Thursday because we could have played 3 days. It's too late to change. The thing to remember for your 5 team bracket is that you are not the only teams that are vying for the fields. I don't like it any better than you do, but it wouldn't be fair to squeeze your games in and make other divisions have to space out their games. If I had my way I would like our 2 team 65 Major Plus bracket to be played this Saturday and Sunday with Memorial Day as a travel day to save vacation time. |
