Feb. 23, 2020 Nvjimmymac 20 posts | Fielders choice or sacrifice One out, men on first and third. Batter hits ground ball to short. Short throws to second, out, second throws to first, safe. Runner on third scores. I say the batter gets a fielder’s choice and a time at bat. Others say he gets a sacrifice. What say you? |

The batter reaches first on a fielder's choice. The batter reaches first on a base on balls while the bases are full." |

If the team strictly goes by on base percentage (many do) then he gets credit for that. A sacrifice would be a sacrifice fly or a sacrifice bunt. Since there’s no bunting in softball a ground ball, as BJ correctly points out, cannot be considered a sacrifice |

Also true for errors, but most softball teams I know count errors as getting on base and not against you on OBP so that there are no arguments on whether a batted ball is a hit or an error. |
