Discussion: SCREENS IN TOURNAMENTS

For those of us that pitch or used to pitch, who haven't been hit by a laser beam line drive, we've been lucky. With the technology in bats, everyone is subject to being "lit up". I know 2 pitchers, one of them a close friend, who were hit in the face and required reconstruction surgery. Both were quality ball players in their 50's and play very competitive softball. We all want to think we are manly men and somewhat bullit proof. The bottom line is we are "SENIORS" and our vision, reaction time and the ability to defend ourselves just isn't what it used to. I, for one, don't want to spend the rest of my life having to adjust my eating habits or endure undo pain because I was too stubborn to either wear a mask or have the protection of a screen. Guys, it's just not worth rolling the dice. All it takes is one well hit ball up the middle and have to go to the emergency to have it surgically removed (LOL). We have all played this game that we love and don't want to end it because of being stubborn. Let's face it, the older we get, the better we used to be!

I'm 69 and have been playing in the Florida Half Century Association for 19 years now. While we all (Seniors) remember the "good old days", we experience the issue of the mind saying "yes still can" and our bodies tell us "I don't think so". Bottom line is, the sooner we accept the fact that, that was then, this is now, we will adjust accordingly. For many years now I have subscribed to the fact that "The older I get, the better I used to be"! I still love the game and listen to
the young man inside of me saying "you still can", just not like you used to.

Discussion: In Need Of An ASA Bat

I"ve been playing in two Florida ASA senior softball leagues year round for several years and in FHC for 18 years. I swing the ASA Miken Freak 52 Maxload and the ball jumps off this bat. Several players also have the Freak 52 and absolutely love it. I've heard from a few players that have the Louisville Slugger Z3000 and they have nothing but good things to say about that bat. Dick's Sporting Goods has the Z3000 on their website for $129 with a one year warranty.

If my Miken Ultra II endload two piece would break during a FHC Tournament,I'd have no problem using the Miken Freak 52...just sayin

Discussion: Help for those with Vertigo

Hey Davey, we've talked several times at FHC tournaments. My name is Jeff Thomas (the old fart with the glasses, mustache and hairy chin)and I play with Globe Trailers 65's. I thought I had Vertigo 14 years ago because I got dizzy and walked funny. Turned out it wasn't Vertigo it was Miller lite-itus. So I quit drinking and it cleared right up! Several years ago my (ex)wife said I was too dizzy. I told her I thought it might be vertigo. She assured me that's not what she was referring to. We got divorced and...yep you guessed it...it cleared right up. Just when I thought I was over it, I got the final divorce settlement and damned if it didn't come back again!

All kidding aside Davey, I will share your information with anyone that may have Vertigo. You are truly a caring, compassionate man on and off the field. It is my honor and pleasure to have you as a friend. Hope to see you at the Winter Nationals in Ft Myers.

Discussion: SSUSA Membership

Thanks for the clarification. I am not a problem maker and no, Taits, it's not that hard to follow the rules if they're clearly explained. Again, it's titled the "2014" Winter Nat'l and somewhere in the qualifications should be stated that it requires a 2015 membership. No offense intended and shouldn't be misunderstood. The "checks in the mail" :-)

Discussion: SSUSA Membership

I am a member of the SSUSA association and will be playing in the "2014" Winter National Championship Tournament Nov. 4th thru the 6th. My card is valid thru the 2014 season. I called the SSUSA number to confirm my membership and was told that I needed to renew my card if I wanted to play in the Tournament????? He said that this is a 2015 roster event and that my card isn't valid and I had to wait until the 3rd week in October before I could renew it??? What the hell is going on! This is a 2014 Tournament and my card is good thru the 2014 season. I'm 68 and am easily confused sometimes, but this doesn't make any sense.

Discussion: Dimarini One

My question is for Alan (Tri18). I've heard nothing but positive feed back from FHC players as well as many players in The Villages league that have either tried or purchased the bat. Several tournaments ago(FHC), a vendor set up demo bats on a field that wasn't being used. I took about 15 to 20 swings with the end loaded model. It had a good feel and the ball(375/44) seemed to jump off the bat. My question for Alan is this. Some time ago you were going to do a complete review of the "Demarini One" end load. Have you completed your testing and what are your thoughts.

Discussion: "The One"

Any comments on Demarini's new end loaded senior bat? A vendor was at a FHC tournament several months ago and set up demo's on an open field for hitting. It had a nice feel and seemed to have good pop right out the wrapper. What are your thoughts?

Discussion: Face masks

"To wear or not to wear, that is the question" More and more pitchers are starting to realize that no matter how quick they think their response time is, accidents will happen. In the last FHC tournament a pitcher was hit in the face and suffered serious injuries and several days in intensive care. Some associations and tournaments now require a face mask for all pitchers. I am an infielder and occasional pitcher. I have opted to wear a face mask (Champro, $25 at Play it again sports) for obvious reasons. About a year ago in a local senior league, while playing shortstop, was fielding an average, easy playable ground ball. When the ball was approximately 2 feet in front of me, it took a freak bounce straight up into my mouth. 9 stitches and an emergency room bill later was enough for me to realize how easy it is to have a facial injury. I 've been playing very competative softball for over 45 years and never been hit in the face before. I was about 80 to 85 feet away from home plate. Pitchers are much closer. Senior players and especialy pitchers need to subscribe to the attitude that "the older we get, the better we used to be". What are your thoughts on requiring all pitchers to wear a protective face masks?

Discussion: Pitchers Mask or Helmet Mask Combo

My recommendation would be the Champro adult face mask. I'm an infielder and pitcher in a local softball league and the infield isn't in the best condition. I wear the Champro face mask and find it very comfortable to wear with a good field of vision. Most of the other masks I researched were much more expensive. You can get the Champro Adult mask at Play it Again Sports for $25 or on line for around the same price.

Discussion: Reborn Miken user

Several months ago I lost faith in miken because of the short life span of my 3rd red end loaded Miken Ultra II. I bought the white Centenarian combat and was using it in tournaments. I talked to Alan Tanner at Team 1 Sports about a good back up bat. He suggested the new Miken II 2-piece end loaded. I was somewhat reluctant but based on his knowledge and experience, I bought the bat. Now the Combat is my BP and back up bat. Several weeks later I called Alan again because I wanted an ASA bat for a local senior league I play in. He again recommended Miken and suggested the new ASA end loaded bat. So, I bought it also. I couldn't be happier with the new 2-piece Ultra II and was very pleased with the "out of the wrapper" performance of the Miken ASA end loaded bat. Alan is now my new "softball Guru" best friend and has been added to my Christmas Card list! Thank you Alan for your advice and recommending I give Miken another chance.

Discussion: Cold Weather Clarification: Bats or Balls?

All of us at one time or another have played in cold weather. I live in Forida and occasionally have had to play ealy morning games in a FHC tournament when the temp was in the 40's. I am considering buying a microwavable bat warmer to protect my bats. I know that the Bat manufactures clearly state not to use a bat in cold weather conditions. My question is, does a bat warmer give the necessary protection or is it actually a false sense of security and the real culprit in cold weather are the balls?

Discussion: Ultra II bats...may they rest in piece

Thanks to all for your response in regard to my choices. Please bare with me in the following comments. I am no different that every other senior who plays softball in that when I purchase an item for $200 I would like some kind of assurance that the product is worthy of that investment. We, as seniors, have allowed the bat manufacturing companies to prosper by continuously shrugging our shoulders when a bat breaks too soon and turning around and purchasing another one because there is no warranty. I understand the use and abuse bats take depending upon who is swinging it. Wouldn't be nice if just one of the bat manufacturers offered a limited warranty. Example: 90 day return policy with a new replacement bat. 6 month limited warranty with a $50 certificate or discount toward the purchase of a new bat. 1 year limited warranty with a $25 certificate or discount toward the purchase of a new bat. If just one of the bat manufacturing companies would consider some kind of an assurance that their product is a good investment and they stand behind it, the rest would soon follow. Remember when bats were $300 and came with a 1 year warranty. All bat manufacturing companies offer 1 year warranties with the exception of senior bats. I would gladly pay the additonal $100 knowing that the company stands behind their product rather than paying $200 for a bat and in 6 months I will have to pay another $200 and still have no guarantee how long it will last. Okay I'm done venting, but dammit aren't we, as seniors, supposed to get smarter as we get older????

Discussion: Ultra II bats...may they rest in piece

I have been an ultra II user for 15 years. I used the black balanced bat for a long time and switched to the red end loaded two years ago. I am not a power hitter but occasionally will take 1 or two out per tournament. I just cracked the third red bat after 6 tournaments. I only used the red bats once a month in FHC tournaments. When one would crack I would use it for BP trying to extend the life of the new replacement bat. I will no longer buy Ultra II's. I am ready to make the switch to the Centenarian. Which bat, the black or the white, is the best choice and why?

Discussion: White Centenarian Short barrel

Two questions. How did you ever find a new Yellow MM. I had one, loved it, but it had an endcap issue. Even with the end cap problem a fellow player at one of the FHC tournaments offered to buy it for $175 regardless of the glued endcap...Sold! Second question. Where can I find the Canadian version of the white centenarian?

Thanks rightj1 for your input. Where can I find the Canadian version with the small knob? I also have the MM Combat senior gear 2 bat. It's not broke in yet but I'm very pleased with the performance so far. Have you hit with that bat and what's your opinion and comparison to the white centenarian?

Discussion: White Centenarian Short barrel

Now that the White Centenarian has been out for awhile, what are the latest opinions, comparisons and reviews? My main concern is the shortened barrel from 13" to 10" reducing the "sweet" spot. I have been told that there's also an issue with paint chipping. Will umpires, after seeing the chipping, not allow the bat to be used during the game? Has the issue been addressed and resolved by Combat?
