Discussion: Catchers will wear a mask

I believe I was the only poster on this thread who mentioned hearing about this whole mask thing from my dentist I gather Dbax was referencing me in his snarky little post. I could list ad nauseum the counter arguments to the whole wear a mask argument. But I will suffice in saying when snarky references are made and the poster lacks the spine to spell it out who he or she is referring to that speaks volumes of their character. As a sidebar, my dentist whom I grew up with, has been more correct in his assessments then the so called 'experts' who at the onset predicted 2.5 million US deaths. We now stand at over 100k deaths.

Discussion: Catchers will wear a mask

• It will be mandatory for catchers to wear a covering over their nose and mouth.

Playing devil's advocate: If a catcher has a chronic breathing/respiratory condition and cannot wear a mask, will a doctors note release them from wearing a mask? Also seems a plastic face shield would fog up and require constant wiping/cleaning. What constitutes an acceptable 'mask'? I mean a catcher could pull his shirt up over his nose and mouth, is that okay? Are these decisions made by the field umpire on a case by case basis?

• Until the pandemic subsides, we will change our player check-in to minimize groups and contact.
What constitutes 'subsides', the numbers are already going down.

Discussion: What would've the call been?

Had our Wednesday pick up game yesterday. I sat that one out and decided to umpire for the boys. Now there was a situation but since no one appealed and it was 'just' a pick up game no call was made. SITUATION: Bases were loaded, 1 out, run #5 was on third. Batter hits single to left run scores but runner from 1st doesn't touch second and goes to dugout. What's the call playing in a 5 run maximum game and does that call change at all playing under 'catch up and go up by 5 runs' game rules?

Michigan Gov Gestapo Gretchen has graciously 'allowed' dentist and family doctors to go back to work. I had a dental appointment yesterday. My dentist told me that 'if you are under 80 years old and you get the virus your chances of recovery are 99.99%. There is increased testing now accounting for more positives and the way that 'causes of death' are being recorded is resulting in inflated deaths attributed to the virus. Basically, if a piano falls on you from a 40th floor skyscraper but the virus is present in your system then THAT is recorded as the cause of death.

Nice article on Dave Weinman and his senior softball workout in this time of nonaction in the May 31 edition of the Wall Street Journal. I hope the monitors allow the link below to the article.

No problem. you know the mindset these days, (especially CA), just give everyone a trophy and a t-shirt and call it a day...problem solved. But ya' gotta wonder, just what would a senior softball riot look like compared to what we are seeing on TV these days...... :-)

I just read an interesting statistic reported by Guy Benson: He reported that 42% of all Chinese virus deaths here are nursing home residents who make up .06% of the nations population.

Our latest clandestine location for illegal assembly and play is in plain sight at the intersection of two main roads. So far, had one cop in the parking lot on Friday, after we started arriving he just started his car and left, Saturday we had two police SUV's cruise by together but they never stopped.

Discussion: Coronavirus vanishing in UK...

An Oxford University vaccine trial has only a 50 per cent chance of success because coronavirus is fading so rapidly in Britain, a project co-leader has warned.

The warning comes as new data reveals that there are now 224 vaccines in development around the world - almost double the total of just a month ago.

Professor Adrian Hill said an upcoming Oxford vaccine trial, involving 10,000 volunteers, threatened to return "no result" because of low transmission of COVID-19 in the community.
The eyes of the nation — and perhaps the world — are firmly on Hill and his team at Oxford University.

This week, pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca announced a $US1.2 billion deal with the United States to produce 400 million doses of an unproven coronavirus vaccine first produced in Hill's small Oxford lab. The British government has agreed to pay for up to 100 million doses, announcing that 30 million might be ready for British citizens as soon as September.

"It is a race, yes. But it's not a race against the other guys. It's a race against the virus disappearing, and against time," he said. "At the moment, there's a 50 per cent chance that we get no result at all."

Hill said that of 10,000 people recruited to test the vaccine in the coming weeks — some of whom will be given a placebo — he expected fewer than 50 people to catch the virus. If fewer than 20 test positive, then the results might be useless, he warned.

"We're in the bizarre position of wanting COVID to stay, at least for a little while. But cases are declining."

Played our 3rd pick-up game in the last 4 days today. Today, near 85 by the time we finished and high humidity. Went home cut the grass and had an epiphany, you know what, I'm starting not to miss the game....Hmmmmmm.....

Amen Webbie, very well put. So we all hide indoors cowering with our masks on only to get run over and killed by a drunk driver when we stick our heads out the door. I believe our fates are written when we are born. We had been just hitting at various locations but actually played a pick-up game yesterday. Had 22 guys show up on a semi-showery day ranging in age from 60 to 88. Had a policeman sitting in the parking lot upon our arrival, we started showing up and he just started up his vehicle and left. Thank you officer. Here in Michigan Governor Gestapo Gretchen has just extended our shelter in place order for 3 more weeks. 600 Michigan physicians and over 300 Michigan dentists sent letters to her disloyal highness detailing the unseen consequences in her 'order'.

I got one of those internet mailings from a friend the other day, we've all got them and in regard to masks it said: If a good stout pair of blue jeans and a pair of boxer shorts cannot stop a fart from getting out then what good will a mask really do?

Hey Stick, how about the time at the old Softball City when you guys won the championship and Turk was body slamming you upstairs in the bar making so much noise that John came up there from the office below and told him to cut it out. Good times at the old City!

Interesting article Sully. It makes sense though. Not only that, the dirtier you got as kid the better your own immune system builds up. These super clean germ-o-phobe people raising kids these days are doing them a huge disservice, nothing but various viral ailments and allergies coming for them.

mck, good luck with that. There is a school of thought that believes that the virus is actually an exosome, not a virus. I think more people have contacted this and got rid of it then anyone realizes, which is pretty much what happens with other bugs going around. I think it was late February when our 55+ volleyball league shut down, no one was ill but it was shut down. One player on our team returned from vacation in early February from Thailand with no illness....

Thanks mck, I was wondering about that. The virus reportedly was already here as early as November... Anyone know of someone playing in that Feb. TOC tourney that took ill afterwards, I haven't.
