Discussion: New Rules

Mango,
Here are my thoughts on this one... we already give up several things when we play M teams...
1) HR rules - not that big a deal to us because we seldom hit 9... but this is supposed to be a big reason they don't play M+... that and money.
2) Equalizer runs - 80% of the time the other team takes them in lieu of 11th fielder.
3) Lower runs/inning - again, not a huge deal in pre-season, tends to move games along... but inhibits our chances of catching up on freebies.
4) The equalizer runs count against us in seeding calcs...
5) Now... we are compelled to be home team... the opportunity to offset the equalizer runs is further mitigated. Perhaps the theory behind this rule is to move the game along or reduce the potential pain of a M+ team having a prolonged open inning... who really knows? Perhaps both.
I'm all for our team playing the pre-season with 'legislated ankle weights' but I wasn't expecting an 'R Galvan backpack'... I mean, now it's 'piling on'... :-)
I always wonder how well thought out these type of rules are... comprende PPR? Now there was a real dandy... sort of surprising to me that some of these were passed unanimously... I still have a JFK button for the 1960 Presidential election 'vote early, vote often'... (-:
We don't really care about the equalizers in the local stuff... they're just developmental tourneys anyway, IMO. But when we play in 3 day events and play M teams in seeding this will come into play. Still, if the seeding outcome doesn't impact game times or number of games it's a 'no harm, no foul'
As always, good talking with you...

Discussion: Poindexter is Selected

I've played against Clyde for parts of 4 decades and he is the epitome of 'walk softly and carry a big stick'. When we played his teams we were always counting backwards to determine how far he was from batting... we viewed him as being in scoring position as he stepped in the batter's box. We were willing to walk him with the bases loaded... we didn't do this for many other players.
He was a high profile player who was also a credit to the game. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Clyde... on and off the field.

I like the way SSUSA selects their HOFers. It more closely resembles MLB's method.

Congratulations, Clyde!

Discussion: new rule 6.16 WIND OR SUN AFFECTING BOTH PITCHERS

With each additional rule that is added, the game is getting more and more bastardized.
The Rules Committee apparently cares more for the batter's sun issues than the pitcher's safety. WTF?
Have these folks ever actually played the game?
Here's a thought... don't schedule games at those times of day on the affected fields.

Discussion: New Rules

LL,
"the team giving the equalizer SHALL be the Home team in all such games"... I added the emphasis on 'shall'... it is not an option.
This can work against you in the seeding round... visitors can have a larger open inning... home team may not bat in last inning. The runs we give up also count against us in seeding (runs allowed), which really is a crock...
To me, this rule is the equivalent of the Trojan Horse... a gift that is not really wanted/needed.

You mentioned the break point is 65/70 for 'entire team playing down' rule. I expect that the committee felt the need to have that rule cease at some point (going up in age brackets), but I'm curious as to why they chose it there... i.e. why does it limit 65 teams but not 70s?
I understand that if they do have a break point they have to put in somewhere... was it merely based upon the sessions? 65s and up play during the week, all others play on weekends...
Neither rule change will cause insomnia for me but I always wonder why we bother to add rules like these. The latter one comes on the heels of Timmy's Tirade, of course, but only addresses entire teams. Applied retroactively, MTC would not have been allowed to play but Cornerstone would have been... did I interpret this in the correct way?

Discussion: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RULING • WMC 50-Major Matter

"Managers must APPLY to SSUSA for approval of these players in writing. These players are approved or denied on an individual basis."
This has been the rule for some time now. It allows for some subjectivity, which is a positive to some and negative to others.
The REAL place to affect rule change is at the annual Rules Committee meeting. If I felt strongly about the rule I'd go to Reno.
In reading the posts on this subject matter, before and after Tim was banned, the general feeling is that ANY added M+ player AUTOMATICALLY improves the team beyond their level of play. Is EVERY M+ player better than M players in his own age group (let alone those 5 years younger)?
I recognize that Tim and Swing feel this way, based upon their comments. But I argue the fact that the last two teams in the 50 M event (who had a lot of 55 M+ guys) does not, in of itself, offer any level of substantiation to this position. Small samplings and coincidence are hard to separate. It seems to me that if this theory were accurate there would be little reason to play the games.
We've played younger M teams for 12-13 years now in the pre-season.
Our record was better than .500 in the early years and less than .500 lately. To think that athleticism is the primary reason teams win is folly... it comes down to execution... we didn't execute as well lately as we had before.
We're not proponents of picking up extra players for national tourneys unless we've had a string of injuries... as a M+ team we're allowed 2 out of area players which we have seldom used (the exceptions being in the now defunct SSWS/NASCS which allowed 3 guys from outside a 150 mile radius and the pickups we utilized replaced injured guys or absentees).
We 'dance with the ones we brung', too. We believe strongly in team unity... we don't replace healthy players.

Discussion: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR RULING • WMC 50-Major Matter

The language has been there for years but this entire episode was confusing to me as well. On top of the additional verbiage supplied by Mango, which should have halted the whole argument weeks ago, it seems to me Tim's team had an equal number or slightly more 55 M+ guys than did their opponent... i.e. where was the 'uneven playing field'...
Tim stated that he didn't feel that Cornerstone's management had the wrong motives.
He admitted that he felt that 50 M teams shouldn't be allowed to add 55 M+ players... yet his team had 15 or so.
Cornerstone went through the process as outlined above, whether Tim admitted this or not.
Despite ALL of this, these threads were going on for damn near 2 months.
I cannot speculate on Tim's motivation but, as an observer/reader, the this subject has been a huge downer.
However, we should keep in mind that Tim represented himself only, not his team.

Discussion: Apology to SSUSA

Gonz,
I am not speaking for SSUSA, just as someone who has seen thousands of posts over the past decade.
It wouldn't matter what thread you instigated, there are just some folks who need to be heard... over and over.
I'd be surprised if your motive was anything other than curiosity (as you stated). The current air is full of controversy, hence the large number of anonymous viewers.

Discussion: SCREENS IN TOURNAMENTS

I have played in a senior league that uses the screen. I found it a bit odd at first but no one seemed to be bothered by it. When a batted hit the screen it was called a strike... if the hitter already had 2 strikes he was called out. Everyone knew the rules and no one complained (that I saw).
Depending upon whether the pitcher was a lefty or a righty... the screen was put in a certain location.
There was a fairly large disparity in age and skill level so the screen provided refuge to some of the pitchers.
Some pitchers still made plays but half of their territory was taken away.
I do recall it ever coming into play on thrown balls... I may have played in 25 games in that league... maybe a small sampling.
Use it in tournaments? Perhaps not. The skill level is more consistent (when in the same division).
I would like to see it used when the sun is a factor for pitchers in qualifier and local tourneys. I asked about this in January but the TD said that 'SSUSA disallows it'... end of story on that but no one was hurt.
I don't really care if they use it in tournaments or not... it's almost a non-issue for me.

Is he trying to run faster than ever before or to merely regain some speed lost in the past 12 months? The latter could be caused by an injury, direct or indirect...

Discussion: 70 AAA schedule Masters-Bitch time

I recognize that the title of this thread includes only 70 AAA but the 2nd post mentions the 65 division. We've played both formats, 3 and 4 days, and much prefer the shorter one. To presume that everyone 65 has retired is erroneous. Being gone for 4 days is plenty (one travel day).
We usually have only 5-6 teams in our division so there aren't as many games for our division. This could definitely be influential in our thinking.
Playing at night is a poor idea for older age groups.
It seems to me that the premise is to build the WMC bigger instead of building it better. Rather than let every team in it, why not confine it to the first 400 teams (arbitrary number)?
A lot of the issues are about the fields, game times, etc. It means little to me that you had 500 teams (or whatever number it was). What means more is how we feel about the tournament.
We were among the more fortunate having played at BLD all 3 days. I had every reason to feel good about our venue, game times, etc. Not everyone was as lucky as we were.
As always, Dave Dowell does a super job of scheduling games in a common sense manner. This is particularly impressive when you factor in the total number of games v available game slots... and the many venues.
But paying $700 and playing at Shadow Rock would be a real let down.

Discussion: GSC SENIOR BAT IN RENO

I feel that I need to reiterate that I'm not a paid spokesperson for GSC or for the senior bat, P413. As a result of the video on their web site I've been asked by a few friends if I was promoting the P413. No, I'm not.
I consented to the video filming on the same day that I was able to hit with a prototype (4-5 weeks ago). At the time it was not approved but, as has been reported, now it is. While I have no reason to feel that the bat we used is any different than the one that was approved (in terms of performance), I do not know for certain as the one that we used had no graphics or any printing on it whatsoever. I am not making any insinuations, just merely verifying what I can.
I'm very anxious to hit one with the approval sticker on it... and I'm told that this is just around the corner. When I do I'll give my honest assessment of it.
From what I personally witnessed, the bat we tested performs as well as the red Miken. I was told that it had over 1,000 swings on it but I only personally witnessed 500+... it was still going strong when I left the BP session.
Still, 500+ swings on a high performance bat is impressive! Even more so when you consider the size/power of some the hitters.
As I stated previously, I am impressed with the bat we used and would like to have one even if it's just a BP bat.

Discussion: Please send you thoughts and prayers... for the RUDY FLORES FAMILY...

I wish to clarify my previous post.
I did not intend to leave the impression that I ever had any issues with Rudy personally. What I meant to convey was that, in the late 70s & early 80s,the games were fiercely contested. Rudy's team and our team's battles epitomized this and then some. It was just the way it was in that era.
Rudy was a multi tool player with Bombats and/or with DeMarinis. He did not need a 1.2 bat to play @ the highest level.
If I offended any of Rudy's family or friends I apologize. I have a great deal of respect for Rudy today as I did in our younger days.

Wow! Almost hard to believe. I used to play against Rudy 30+ years ago. Hated him... But only because he was one competitive lil' dude. He was a heckuva player for May Tool and then Class Act. Our teams fought on & off the field... Literally.
As a senior I'd see him and found him to be a very nice persom. I'll keep his family in my prayers for certain.I know that he'll be missed by many.

Discussion: Socks

I have purchased several pairs of dri-fit socks thru Foot Smart. I've been wearing them for 3-4 years now and my feet remain comfortable. I've had no issues like plantar fasciitis.
I prefer the Fox River Triathlon Quarter cuts and/or Wigwams. I initially found them locally but then I had to search for them on line. They run about $9 per pair but seem to last 2 yrs or more.
