Doc, I think Dr Ruth is your best answer and she'll probably give you a professional discount... (-:
Seriously, you hit pretty well with ANY bat... but we do need to discuss your retirement... (-:

Trotter 25:
Conway finished the entire tourney (6 games) with a ob% of 1.000... he also played 60 M the previous weekend and made but one out in 20+ ABs... and led the 2 teams in HRs and RBIs... and played SS & P and other key positions.
No one works harder at 'being the best he can be' than Conway. But it's his team attitude that is his best attribute.
I'm looking forward to seeing the Melee 2... particularly in Conway's hands.

Discussion: Your opinion on best Senior Bat

I've seen/heard lots of comments regarding the Adidas Melee 2. It's hard for me to separate the wheat from the chaff when the persons relaying their findings are also selling them... particularly so when they switch products from year to year.
I recall that the Reebok Melees were sold through dealers and through individual reps. I see advantages of both...
How will Adidas market its new bats? Through indiv vendors only or will they be also be sold through dealers (who sell a variety of bats)?
Also, in trying to find info directly from Adidas's web site, they do not show softball as one its listed sports. Obviously, they do support NCAA softball teams (such as UCLA) and they make softball equipment... gloves, bats, masks, etc. I did not find any info on their site regarding the Melee 2.
I did find a couple of videos via You Tube but couldn't really ascertain much from them.
I've been a huge fan of the Reebok Melee series and am hopeful that the Melee 2 is as good (or better).

Discussion: The new sun rule 6.16

We played in Hemet, CA, 2 weeks ago (SCSSA) and played 2 early AM games when the batter was looking into the sun. In each game the mgrs agreed to allow the umpire to reduce the pitching height down to roughly 8 feet. This didn't alleviate 100% of the problem but it sure made it much better without 'reinventing the wheel'.

Discussion: Mendoza Line

One problem with team batting averages is that half the guys are always below it... (-:
I agree that .700 is the 'new .500' and that certain defensive players can still contribute a lot even when hitting .650 (or less)... the primary idea is to out score the other team, whether this is due to holding them down, scoring 7 runs every inning or a combination.
Certainly, a DH should hit well above the team ob% or drive in lots of runs.
The other element is the playing conditions... wind blowing in usually produces fewer runs than the opposite. If so, a lower team ob% can be expected.
Also, comparing the ob% of the gazelles to that of the oxen is a misguided comparison.
Having stated all of this, I want each of our players to aim for 700+ and to work hard at this between tourneys... but if everyone hits 700 and we don't win it's deemed a failure. We obviously didn't do enough things well...

CurtfromKY:
I'm not sure that your quotes shown below was directed to my post or not.
If it was, please re-read my last sentence... it states that the most important 'Stat' is a 'W'... please don't read this as winning is more important that safety, etc.
Conversely, if your post was directed to another post/posts, I apologize for not being diligent enough to re-read this entire thread.

'my attitude has changed about the "nothing matters but the Win".'
... 'I am quite sure "winning" was the LAST thing on their minds.

Discussion: Batting Average or On Base Percentage

Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics used to say about stats... 'my uncle drowned in a pond with an average depth of 5 feet... he was 6'5", how was this possible'...
Apparently it was his uncle's misfortune to be in the deeper portion of the pond.
The most important stat is a 'W'...

Discussion: Sliding into first base

Some runners slide/slid (present/past) into 1B in order to avoid a tag. I'm aware that it's a force play but some throws require a tag.
The fact that SSUSA rules do allow for a slide to avoid a collision is only a semi relief... it's left to an umpire to rule on whether the slide was, in his/her judgement, completely necessary.
A tag play could easily involve a collision. I presume that this is the reason there are so many safety rules in place for the area between 3b and home plate.

Doc, you were correct with most of the fact pattern... however, it was the last pitch of the day that got me, not the first... my posterior was outside the safety of the screen because I had zero reason to expect a ball anywhere near me (if your first 4,000 swings were any indication)... I had already started the 'clean up' process and was a sitting duck, so to speak... my fault entirely.
I was/am ok with being the sacrificial lamb as long as it helped you use more of the field... you're right, the 10 year statute of limitations has expired but I still like to play the victim role now and then.
While I didn't really see it, I'm told that it was the best ball you hit all day. :-)

Discussion: Travelling question

We have had some lost baggage issues over the years but it has happened very infrequently.
To be on the safe side, we ask our players to put the following in their 'carry on' bag:
Cleats, glove, batting gloves, eye glasses, knee braces, and 1st day uniform with hat... the flight attendants will obviously disallow bats (in carry on).
It's ultimately the players' choice on what to pack in carry on bag, if anything. The guys who ignored this and had lost luggage were less than thrilled when they weren't in starting line up.
As I stated previously, this type of thing rarely occurs.
In general, I'd put as little (valuable equipment) in the bat bag as I could (aside from bats).

Doc,
That is great insight (no pun intended) and comes from a pro...
Along those same lines, should a BP pitcher wear hip pads for that rare instance when perhaps a stone pull hitter decides to deviate from form? I recognize that this might be extremely unlikely...
Any thoughts?

Discussion: Finding a bat's swing weight

Bruce, I have never really cared about its swing weight as much as its balance point. To determine how end loaded one bat is when compared to another... I put them side by side on a flat horizontal surface (that is 3' wide or more)... with the knob placed closest to the table edge, I gradually move both toward the edge. The one that hangs on longer is more end loaded.
Putting 3 or more bats in this position can provide a broader comparison.
I recently did this with new Miken Max Loads, one is a 26 oz demo and the other was a 27 oz production model. Both have a 1/2 oz load in the end, therefore, I expected them to react exactly alike to this test. They didn't... we finally figured this out... because the end load is a precise, defined amount (1/2 oz) the balance point will be different for the same model but different weights.
Of course, comparing a Big Cat to a Max Load produces different results as well.
But while this comparison works for me, others may well want to know the actual swing weight. You are probably more learned on this than most players.
I read the article in the SSUSA newspaper as well. That methodology won't work for me either.

Discussion: Status of the GSC bat

Warning track Power:
A couple of clarifications...
1) It wasn't me that stated that I had been to the factory and I never went to the warehouse here in Orange County either.
2) I hear the same things about Kristi having wealth prior to meeting Steve. I heard just the opposite of Steve... from folks who have known him for 20+ years. He certainly didn't have money to pay back the plantiffs in the 2006 bankruptcy case.
I cannot say with any level of certainty what their intentions were regarding the bat. But...
1) 4 years or so Steve made a promise to the previous investors (when he partnered with Bill Gately) and, to my knowledge, none of them were ever made whole. He changed the name of the company to God's Sports Company at that time.
2) At the same time he made a pledge to see the bat to fruition and to build it inside the USA... and that it would be superior to any previous senior bat.
3) In April of 2013 he made the claim that the GSC had been approved... and would be in production very soon... the approval is one promise he made that became reality... but not the mass production part.
4) The GSC team used the bat in Reno in 2013 but it was soon 'pulled back' due to it being too long (i.e. longer than 34").

The McKinlays have been charged with affinity fraud to the tune of $3 M large.
We are now in Dec of 2015 and the bat still has not been mass produced... the previous investors have not been satisfied...
In a shorter time frame than this, and with a much lower capital base, several other bats have been designed, approved, produced and sold. One that comes to mind is Kevin Schullstrom's Nightmare... it came on the market in Jul/Aug of 2014... there were others.
I don't know anything about 'fake this' or 'fake that'. But I do strongly believe that the previous investors could have been paid and the bats could have been produced with the type of money that went through their hands.

Where does lack of intent/commitment end and fraud begin? I don't know as I'm not a lawyer nor a superior court judge. But I feel fairly certain that leasing beach front property (plus other stuff) was largely irrelevant to the production of bats. In fact, it seems to conflict with it if making prudent use of investor's money was a priority.
All of this (and more) could just be a series of incredible coincidences... or it could be something more sinister. They deserve their day in court as much as the investors deserve a return on their money. Unfortunately, it appears the latter won't happen.

Discussion: Status of the GSC bat

Southern Son:
This whole subject has been an albatross for 3 years or so. From my perspective, there were three groups of people participating in the fray... those that knew Steve for many years (preceding his GSC involvement)... those that came to know him via GSC (and some from the message board)... and those who didn't know him at all and didn't know what to think.
I had met him prior to GSC but didn't really know him (still don't). But long term friends of mine had known (some have been around him for 20+ years) and were extremely skeptical. I was in this category but consented to trying the 'April 2013 version' of the bat... I hit with Steve, two of his GSC EEs, his daughter, his son and a friend of mine (a 20+ year friend of Steve's). I was impressed with the bat's pop and could only take Steve's word for its durability... the latter became more difficult by the day.
I initially gave them a 'thumbs up' for it on the message board as well as allowing them my photo and verbal endorsement (You tube). I soon asked them to remove my likeness and statement because none of his statements came to be. Sooner or later charm wears off. For what it's worth, I was never compensated for my limited involvement nor was there ever any discussion of such.
Ironically, his wife has lived within 5 miles of us for a long time and her friends speak very highly of her... I've never met her. She met she Steve at church (so the local story goes) a few years ago and I'm told that they were married within 8 days.
I do not know who they obtained their funding from and or how they got it... from what I've heard and read, it doesn't appear that much of it has gone into the production of bats. But there a lot of Kristi's friends in San Clemente that are just sick over this whole debacle. Not being in their inner circle, I do not know the extent of her culpability. Like Steve, she's innocent until proven guilty... but as Benji stated, there does not seem to be a lot of wiggle room in this.
Both sides of the GSC threads have been bashing the other, to some degree. Those that knew Steve for a long time felt strongly skeptical (as stated above). Those who felt that he was a reborn man felt equally certain that we were just cynics. There are no winners in this one.

Discussion: Status of the GSC bat

The link below may be helpful to those who wonder when the GSC bat will be released. The GSC CEO is currently being accused of Affinity Fraud... this is explained in detail within the article... but it is one of the absolute worst types.

http://patch.com/california/ranchosantamargarita/coto-de-caza-couple-accused-stealing-cancer-patient-mlb-player-massive-fraud?utm_source=alert-breakingnews&utm_medium=email&utm_term=police%20%26%20fire&utm_campaign=alert

Recognize that at this point Mr. McKinlay has not been convicted of anything. But he is being accused of some pretty onerous crimes. I am hopeful that anyone who has invested in GSC will receive some form of restitution. Perhaps the phone number below will be of value to you.

Anyone with any additional useful information can contact the Orange County, CA Supervising District Attorney Investigator, Damon Tucker @ 714 648-3615.

Discussion: new rule 6.16 WIND OR SUN AFFECTING BOTH PITCHERS

Yep, but several stadiums must have received variances because their left field lines run east-west (as you previously stated).
TX, Cle, Mil and others... Why?
Each location probably has its own story as to why they were better served with a different orientation. Some even have the pitcher looking into the setting sun... but I'm told that none of them put a screen in front of him during the game... (-:
Rule 1.04 seems more like a suggestion than a rule.

Discussion: new rule 6.16 WIND OR SUN AFFECTING BOTH PITCHERS

It's my feeling that most MLB parks are built with the right field line going east and west. This puts the setting sun in the RF's eyes and right side infielders if the stadium has open areas for the sun to shine between tiers.
But whether it affects the RF or the LF the concept is the same.
The late afternoon game times also affect the MLB hitter due to the increasing shadows around home plate. To my knowledge, no one has convinced MLB to move the mound to the left or right.
They instead try to plan around this by controlling game times, unless TV overrides them.
In lieu of moving the pitcher, why not limit the arc to 8' (as an example)?
If it's in the pitcher's eyes put up a screen for 2-3 innings.
Best scenario in both cases (sun in batter or pitcher's eyes) is to plan/schedule around it. If it rains do we not work around it? To prevent injuries or to preserve the field? Whichever or both...

Cat43:
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't your team (Cornerstone) the essence of a throw together team? I didn't see any of the 50 M teams play nor do I have a real clue about any of the players involved. I'm just going by what I've read on here.
If Cornerstone was a 'throw together team' its success would seem to dispute your premise.
I've been around throw together teams that didn't do well and, at times, because of the very things you mentioned.
However, I've also seen quite the opposite... they did REAL well.
If you live/play as long as I have you'll see pretty much anything.
My opinion on this is that it depends upon who you pick up and who you already had... if you add 'me first' guys, you'll probably fail.

I can see a potential problem with SSUSA contacting the players from every team that deletes players... 100+ teams x 2 players = 200+ phone calls... if the number of teams making changes exceeds 100 the admin times increases.
