BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – In what has become quite a tradition, the Southern Championships return here in 2013 for the seventh straight year, much to the delight of all involved.

“Birmingham has been a wonderful host – and great sponsor of the Southern Championships,” said Fran Dowell, executive director of Senior Softball USA.

“When we keep a tournament in the same location for seven straight years, you know it’s a perfect fit,” she added. “The tournament has grown every year we’ve had it here so there’s no reason to change. The city has been great to us and our teams have brought in a lot of business so it’s a perfect match.”

This year’s tournament will be he Aug. 15-18 and winners in each division automatically qualify for the 2014 Tournament of Champions, which will be held in Polk County, Florida.

While last year’s tournament was hit by a sudden rain storm, field supervisors and players from participating teams banded together, shoulder to shoulder to prep the fields and preserve this Southern classic. That speaks volumes about the sportsmanship and level of support we get at the Southern Championships, Dowell said.

Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama and was at the center of the civil rights movement in the 1960s.

In recent years, Birmingham has begun to experience something of a rebirth. New resources have been dedicated in reconstructing the downtown area into a 24-hour mixed-use district. The market for downtown lofts and condominiums has increased while restaurant, retail and cultural options are also beginning to expand.
