Torn Rotator Cuff
My sports doc / surgeon says my MRI shows that all 4 tendons in my left (non-throwing) shoulder are completely torn, with bone spurs / arthritis in my shoulder joint. He is recommending a shoulder replacement at the same time as rotator cuff surgery, and I’m not sure about the shoulder replacement, preferring just the rotator cuff repair.

Has anyone had both done? Any input would be appreciated.

The #3 guy in the Scrap Iron 75 M+ lineup (Tom) had that same situation only in the right arm which is his throwing arm. Had the replacement. If hitting is an indicator on whether it works or not, it works! He's a rare 75 who still hits many home runs not only at 75, but with a man-made shoulder. The arm does not work like new for throwing, but the pain is gone!

When he bats is it his forward shoulder closest to the pitcher or his back shoulder closest to the catcher that he had the operation on?

Thanks guys - any idea on how long the recovery took? At this point I’m thinking about only the rotator cuff repair without shoulder replacement.

OZ40 Why did you ask that question, what is the difference between leading or trailing shoulder? Would your swing be quicker with a stronger leading or trialing shoulder?

Real Deal,

I had torn tendons and bone spurs on both of my rotator cuffs, about a year apart from each other (lucky me).

In both cases, the bone spurs were removed at the same time, and if any arthritis was present, applicable action was taken, if possible, to relieve that also.

Normal recovery in the right arm was about 6 months, but full recovery to where I could throw with strength and have no pain whatsoever was about 1 1/2 years. I was about a year into my first recovery when I injured my left shoulder and experienced the same recovery time frame.

Everyone has a different recovery time frame based on their overall health. Mine first happened at age 70.
