| Aug. 12, 2024 Schibs | Topic: Bats Discussion: failed bats I will also add, the liability for the batter who knowingly is using an altered bat, one that is considered more potent and dangerous compared to using a bat off the shelf, can put the batter's personal assets at risk. If a person is injured severely and the court's ruling is guilty, it is considered a negligent act, one that insurance companies would NOT cover. Beware out there for those that seek this advantage, it is not worth the risk. |

| April 7, 2024 Schibs | Topic: Tournaments Discussion: Why is a Major Plus Team playing "Exhibition"? The Midwest Championships has a team playing exhibition at 65 Major. I understand there is no prize for them and they play their 5 games and that's it. How do the games they play effect pool play and their first bracket game? If they best a team in pool, does it count against the team for seeding? Is there anything else that applies. In the past an MP team just plays, gives up the five runs and if they win the tournament that's it. I see other levels have the same thing. Is this new for SSUSA? |

We have a great group of guys that get along well on and off the field, they make the game fun in so many ways. I've been lucky to be associated with so many talented players and good people in senior softball, I hope the same for everyone playing this game that many of us when younger never imagined this to be possible at our age. | Oct. 3, 2022 Schibs | Topic: Teams looking for players Discussion: KC KIDS Looking for Two Players The KC Kids have up to two roster positions available for the 2022 WINTER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in PHOENIX, one outfield and one infield (SS or SC). May lead to more tournaments if the fit is good for both the player and the Kids. Successful organization, 65 age level Team, need serious players able to achieve high level results at Major or Major-Plus, speed matters, player can play one tournament with exemption without a rating increase. Eligible if your home state borders Missouri (Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska) OR we can add up to two players from anywhere west of the Mississippi (rule is 4 players). Even if he signed into the tournament, without being on the lineup card at the beginning of the game, it's my understanding a player cannot be added once the game begins. Has this rule changed in SPA over the past few years? Please explain. Thanks, |

Even though before every game the ground rules are supposed to be discussed, many times they are not. From this point forward, only because it happens so often, I'm going to clarify the openings in fences and how the umpire will rule. Too often it makes a difference in the final result the umpires call, so I will do a better job of documenting the ground rules in the beginning. Stay well and thanks again, Tom |

First of all, he never states it is a ground rule; "NORMALLY if a batter hits a ground ball or line drive through the outfield and it winds up going through one of these gaps or under/over the fence, the proper call is ground rule double". I AGREE it is reasonable to assume he is addressing the ground rule. Secondly, it is not specifically stated whether the "kicked ball" was an egregious attempt by the player to circumvent the rule. It is reasonable to assume since he kicked the ball the umpire's call is related to the player's attempt at manipulating the direction of the ball. Perhaps my original answer could have been more descriptive, however based on the description given it is reasonable to assume there was more to the call than described, just like the ground rule inference. |

Turning2 - respectfully, the attempt to play the ball and kicking it through the opening of a fence whether man made or not goes against the logic of ground rules in most parks I played in. Perhaps I should tell my players if they have no chance of fielding the ball safely with the batter possibly getting a triple or more to kick it over the fence. Last year in Knoxville a home run was ruled not just over the fence, but the net protection above and beyond the fence, there may be rules that escape logic in some parks, but this one takes an on the field play out of the hands of the umpire, hard to believe. |

BILLC48 - once a player attempts a motion towards the ball and touches it whether it be with his hand, glove, foot or anything else, it now becomes a judgement call for the umpire and the 1+1 guideline is used, the base the runner is going to plus one base. Based on your description of the play the umpire made the right call. |

| Feb. 16, 2021 Schibs | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Player Ratings Hey Dave, while on the subject, assessing player classifications is limited especially when attempting to add a player to an online roster, is the reason for not listing a players classification a system issue or an administrative burden, or both? As you know as managers we are forced to email or call if a team is over the threshold of next level players, knowing in advance just may reduce the number of emails and phone calls.
