Crabtown Classic Renamed
June 1, 2021
GLEN BURNIE, MD – SSUSA National Director Don Brooks was recently honored with the renaming of the annual Crabtown Classic to the Don Brooks Crabtown Classic.
Brooks, 83, whose tenure with SSUSA dates back to 1991 as a Tournament Director in Maryland, first laid the groundwork in establishing the Crabtown Classic in 1987. He ran the Crabtown Classic for over two decades, eventually passing the tournament reins over to Tim McElroy.
“Players that you’ve never actually met are better off because of the foundation you laid over 30 years ago,” said McElroy of Books. “Thank you Don Brooks for helping to build the parks (Randazzo & Bachman) and brining senior softball to the Eastern States.”
Brooks would go on to become a National Director in 2001. He serves on the SSUSA National Rules Committee and currently runs the annual Chili Pepper Classic in El Paso, Tex.
For his efforts, Brooks, a Navy veteran and former recreation supervisor in Annapolis, was inducted into the SSUSA Hall of Fame (Director Category), as part of the Class of 2020.
The 2021 Don Brooks Crabtown Classic was played June 3 -6, and featured 57 teams in the Men’s 40 through 75 age divisions.
