East coast player has question about Western National 65M teams
Let me preface my questions by stating that the Eastern Nationals 65 Major bracket doesn’t have a huge number of teams (6) but when I look at the Western bracket, I only see two teams. The winner of the West ( and the East) will receive a chance to play in the the National Championship game in Vegas plus will probably get a bye in Vegas if there is an odd number of teams. Why such a low turnout? Is it the location in CA? Will the Vegas bracket be significantly less than prior years ( usually around 25 teams but with this combined turnout who knows?). Was the Western bracket updated and I’m not seeing the revised schedule? Again, we only have 6 teams in the East ( nothing to brag about ) but 2 teams in the West in a Major division?? Something doesn’t add up here?? Help me out.

This is just MY opinion. Westerns the past few years have not had a big turnout. One reason it might be to close to the Jim Sherman Tournament in Salem OR. Also, there is a good chance it will be over 100+ degrees in Sacramento, Roseville, Elk Grove and Lincoln. Another thing that could contribute (At least this year) to the low turnout might be the Balls. Not blaming SSUSA in any way. The Worth Gold Dot WSL ball is JUNK. They are NOT Warm/Hot weather balls. The warmer it gets, the worst the balls get. The balls are good up to 80 degrees. I was told that SSUSA was having trouble getting their normal balls this year because of all the crap that is going on in the world this year with shipping. Hopefully in Vegas we will be back to the ROCK/STOTE Balls.

East coast player has question about Western National 65M teams
kel,

For the 65 Major bracket in this years' Western Nationals we have a total of 5 teams (2 Major Plus, 1 70 Major Plus, 2 Major), a pretty weak turnout to say the least. In addition, 3 of the 5 teams are from the immediate area, one (Oregon Crabs) from a drivable distance, and the remaining team from Texas. We played in Lincoln last year, was HOT and with the nearby brushfires even hotter. In my opinion, the reason for the small turnout can be attributed to a multitude of reasons:

1) current travel costs for out of state teams are quite high this year
2) it is historically hot in the area this time of the year...not to the liking of many
3) the tournament just doesn't mean that much to many teams
4) the venues aren't top notch and quite spread across a wide area throughout the county
5) in my 16 years of senior ball, the Western Nationals have played outside of Sacramento once (Aurora, CO
2012). To be fair, only 89 total teams then versus 157 now
6) economics says that for the foreseeable future, the tourney will stay in the Sacramento area
7) ok ok, the balls. Singles are good, just sayin'

See some of you next week.
