NEVER HEARD THIS CALL BEFORE AT THE TOC
RUNNER ON 1st-LEFT HANDED BATTER HITS A HARD LINER JUST BELOW THE 1ST BASEMANS KNEE. HE MAKES ONE OF THOSE STARTLED REACTIONS. BALL HITS HIS GLOVE AND IT VEERS TOWARDS 1ST. HE RUNS OVER. PICKS IT UP. TOUCHES 1ST AND THROWS THE BALL TO 2ND AND RUNNER IS TAGGED OUT. UMP RULES BATTER IS OUT AND RUNNER GOES BACK TO 1ST. NOW-THE UMP DID NOT SAY THE BALL WAS INTENTIONALLY DROPPED. HE SAID THE BALL SHOULD HAVE BEEN CAUGHT. NEVER HEARD OF SHOULD HAVE BEEN CAUGHT. HAVE ANY OF U?

it's not a term that should ever be used.. this is the judgment of the umpire as to whether the ball was "intentionally" dropped..

Gary ... You play on a 75+ Division team ... Based on your description of a "hard liner" that "veers off" following contact with a glove held "below the knee", it's logical that the ball may not have been dropped intentionally ... But this is a judgment call, as B.J. indicated, so whatever the ump thinks it is becomes fact ... On the bright side, the mechanics of the Intentionally Dropped Ball rule were followed ...
