July 14, 2020 DaveDowell Men's 70 4318 posts | Hi Mike ... Looks like things are in "debate mode" in Cool Prescott! ... Doug Randall ran (pun intended) this one through the SSUSA office last week and our esteemed National Rules Committee chairwoman Donna McGuire handled it as follows: "Here is how it should be called. Once the batter-runner passes the runner ahead of him, the batter-runner is out for the third out. If the runner coming home already scored, the fifth run counts. There no longer is a force play at second base." ... I fully concur with her analysis ... Thanks! |
July 14, 2020 softball4b Men's 70 1248 posts | Some people like to continue to argue even when given a definitive answer. Not me, Not Doug. When given the answer the other individual, he said, must be a Prescott rule because that is not the rule. Geez what part of live ball does some people not understand. Prescott is 20 - 25 degrees cooler than Phoenix. Yeah us. |
July 14, 2020 DaveDowell Men's 70 4318 posts | Well, Mike ... If he's so confident that he knows the rule, and no one else does, I'm curious why he asked initially? ... Oh well, crazy times these days! ... |
July 14, 2020 B.J. 1107 posts | softball4b.... here's the actual rule on scoring of runs... 5.7 • SCORING OF RUNS A. One run shall be scored each time a runner crosses the scoring line or touches the scoring plate, after legally touching all bases in proper order. B. No run shall be scored if the third out of the inning is the result of: 1. A batter-runner being called out prior to reaching first base or any other runner forced out due to the batter becoming a batter-runner. 2. A runner being put out by a tag or live ball appeal play prior to the lead runner crossing the scoring line or touching the scoring plate. 3. A preceding runner is declared out on appeal involving a force play. Dave, question on this part of the answer (There no longer is a force play at second base.") so with the above scenario you had runners on 1st and 3rd 2 outs... B/R hits a ground ball to the OF and the runner on 1st just takes a couple of steps toward 2nd because the runner on 3rd scored easily for the 5th run... the B/R running hard makes the turn at 1st and passes the runner that never advanced to 2nd for the 3rd out just as the ball is being thrown to 2nd base for the force out... wouldn't the defense have a 4th out appeal to nullify the run.. |
July 14, 2020 B.J. 1107 posts | I meant to add this to above... NOTE: An appeal may be made after the third out in order to nullify a run. |
July 15, 2020 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | B.J., I have only ever had this happen once to me, fortunately in league play and only the second out. The preceding runner stopped on 3B. The runner behind him hit the inside of the bad (instead of making the usual wide turn). I called him out. "I can't believe that you called me out." "I can't believe that you did not see a 250 pound man standing on 3B." The joys of softball. I hope that all is good for your bunch down there. |
July 15, 2020 B.J. 1107 posts | nancy, all is pretty good in my area of Fl. ... most of us 150,000 + old people are keeping up the distancing and masks in stores ... and trying to be safe while playing league softball, pickleball and golf... scary |
July 18, 2020 Wayne 37 Men's 65 773 posts | Not an appeal play. Time play. Runner would have had to pass the proceeding runner prior to run scoring to nullify the run. Runner must have completely passed the proceeding runner to be declared out. |
