Discussion: Infield fly rule

Donna McGuire posted a very good summary of the infield rule in the SSUSA summer newsletter in 2018. With her being a SSUSA chief umpire and chair of the rules committee the concepts should followed until changed.
She said ...A fielder must be able to catch the ball – and catch it with “ordinary effort.” As such, wind conditions, sun conditions and defenders’ abilities MUST be taken into account. Consider two pop flies. One happens in our 50+ division, and a fielder moves quickly enough that he can camp under the ball as it descends. An identical pop fly happens in the 80+ division, but the closest fielder can’t get there quickly enough to get camped. He either will catch the ball on the run or not at all. Two identical pop flies.

The article is quite long and I only posted a section related to this discussion.

Discussion: Verbal Obstruction or Interference

Additional info to support BJ and Grumpy, umpires and others. Sometimes ASA rules become the guidelines when specific rules fall short. Below are some rules specific to this play:

ASA Rule Supplement or Point of Emphasis
33: Interference is defined as the act of an offensive player or team member which impedes, hinders or causes a defensive player attempting to execute a play. It may be in the form of physical contact, verbal distraction or any type of distraction which would hinder the fielder in the execution of the play.

SPA 2020 Rule Book Definitions
Sec. 40 INTERFERENCE: The act of an offensive team member, which impedes, hinders or confuses a defensive player while attempting to execute a play. If judged so by the umpire, vocal interference may be called against any player (s) whether on the field or in the dugout area.

Federation Softball Rules Section 2 Definitions

Section 32 Art 1 Interference is an act (physical or verbal) by a member of the team at bat who illegally impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder….

Discussion: Tharaldson 75 Major Looking for 2 additional players

Tharaldson Men’s Senior Softball (NV) has moved from 70 to 75 Major for 2019. We need 2 more infielders or combo IN/OF. We do not need catchers or 1st base position players. Our 1st tournament will be Bullhead City Jan 15-17. No adjourning state rule for 75’s.
Interested players must be 75 and preferably with an AAA or Major Rating. We have no age 74 openings.
If interested please contact Russ Curtis at 702-581-2323 or Paul Callaghan at 702-408-1218. I can also be contacted at callapa@aol.com.

Discussion: Foot placement in batter's box before pitch

I disagree with Mad Dog. ASA rules are same as SSUSA. See ASA rule 7.3.A. .. no part of the foot can be completely outside the lines prior to pitch. Same for hitting the pitch as discussed in ASA rule 7.6.D

Discussion: border battle

Seniors in 2013 can use senior bats in ASA Senior Championship Play. This is a new ASA rule 3 section 1(exception) beginning in 2013. Local ASA tournaments may allow these bats for seniors.

Discussion: ssusa & umpires, u make the call

I see one posted answer is batter is out and another said sub player is out and ejected. Per rule 7.1 (effect 2) it appears the player who should have batted is out (not the player who hit)and the hit is nullified. The next batter is the one who follows the batter who should have batted. Per 4.7 it looks like an illegal substitution properly appealed and the player would be ejected. Perhaps SSUSA can provide a teaching experience on this one.
