Aug. 1, 2023 Peoria Player | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Intentionally Dropped Fly Ball or Line Drive Thank you Donna for your quick answer. I'll pass it on to our association umpiring members. |
Aug. 1, 2023 Peoria Player | Topic: Rules of the game Discussion: Intentionally Dropped Fly Ball or Line Drive Rule 1.37 states that the ball is dead and an out is recorded if, in the umpires judgement, a fly ball or line drive is intentionally dropped by and infielder with less than two outs and at least first base occupied. Our association has had some discussion as to which player is out - the batter or one of the base runners. It is my understanding that the intent of the rule is that the batter is out, the ball is declared dead and all other runners return to their respective bases. Is this correct? If not, how is the out recorded? Thank you. |
Jan. 31, 2022 Peoria Player | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Scoring Question I appreciate your comments on this situation. The runners were on 1st and 2nd. The batter did, in fact, circle the bases but I can say the defense had given up on the play when the second runner scored. The batter had acquired second base and was on his way to third when the winning run scored. From this, it seems the official scorer should award the batter a double and record the final score as 19 to 18. Makes sense. As a final question, does anyone know of an SSUSA contact responsible for scoring games? I'll pass this on to our volunteer scorer's coordinator. At the end of the day, we're just old guys having fun playing softball. |
Jan. 31, 2022 Peoria Player | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Scoring Question We had a situation in a league where at the end of the 7th inning the home team needed two runs to win - they were behind 17 to 18. There were two men on base and the batter hit a ball into the right field corner. In that league, the batter would have normally scored a home run which would make the score 20 to 18 in any other inning. Because it was the bottom of the 7th and the ball was not hit over the fence, even though the batter would normally easily score, is the batter credited with a home run making the final score 20 to 18? Or, is he only credited with a single, double or triple (the on-base runners were on 1st and 2nd) making the final score 19 to 18? We use SSUSA rules as our guide and only have a few local rules unique to our leagues. None modifying SSUSA scoring protocols. I'd appreciate any thoughts on this situation. Thank you. |
