Discussion: Carson City Calamity

The 70's division for the Rockin Reno tourney was a joke.
Two fields which were maintained but on late Wednesday games the games were reduced to 50 minutes or five innings.
There is always talk about the expense to travel to games with transportation, fees, food, lodging etc.
It was better that age division teams were limited so Carson City didn't have to be used than subject any division to have to play at that city/venue/game limitation.
Obviously SSUSA can't control the weather, but this facility should have never been used--even in good weather. The fields, until they became mud pits on Thursday, were pretty good. But the facility was sub-par. There was no shelter--so wives and spectators had to sit in their cars in the parking lot to get out of the wind and rain. There was no food except for a few snack items that looked like they came from a quick trip to Costco. There were only porta potties and no running water anywhere. And there was no clubhouse to meet with teammates and opponents to chat about the games.

Traveling that far to play 5-inning games at a sub-standard facility was a bad deal. All in all, not a friendly and fun atmosphere to hold a big tournament. I've always enjoyed Rock n' Reno, but sad to say that this one wasn't worth the money. SSUSA could and should have done better for us.
Mike & Robo ... Any time Mother Nature enters an event (BTW, she never pays an entry fee!), the challenge becomes how to deal with her impact on the schedule ... The Carson City Parks & Recreation folks worked their tails off so we could play at all there after they realized they weren't going to be able to meet their construction completion target date ... Our experience is that most players prefer shortened format games over NO games ... The alternative is to convert to a single elimination format, or some simple modified round robin that hardly anyone likes ...

It wouldn't be tough stretch to infer from your comments that you may believe NOT playing was a better alternative ... We respectfully disagree ... There were ZERO open game slots at other than end of nightly last game over the nine days ... We believe we provided the only viable alternative to canceling the divisions scheduled in Carson City ... I wouldn't do it any differently if faced with the same circumstances again ...
