Discussion: You make the call

You make the call
At the Southwest last weekend there was confusion on the unreported sub rule and penalty.

Situation …. In the third inning we substituted a player listed as a legal player/ sub on our lineup card into the game during our at bat. For the sake of argument, although it was heavily disputed, let’s assume he didn’t report in.

He has become an unreported substitute. He hits a 3 run homer. The inning ends. He continues in the game for 2 more innings and comes up again. In his second at bat After 2 pitches and player still at bat the defensive team appeals . The umpire calls him out. And lets him stay in the game. I’ve gone over the rule several times and am still confused as to what I’m missing for him to be called out.

Here’s the rule section I keep reading and I read it as…after he hit the homerun in his first at bat, and there was no appeal and another legal pitch was thrown he is “officially in the game” ( 4.7 B. c. ) OR during his second at bat , 2 innings later, since he already had 2 pitches ( 4.7B.a) he was officially in the game.

In neither of those situations do I see an out called.
Section 4.7. B.b is the only place where an out is called and it states the appeal has to be AFTER he has COMPLETED HIS AT Bat and before the next legal or illegal pitch. He was called out BEFORE he completed his second at bat.

Was the call correct?
Mango .. NO .. after no one caught the violation that inning and after the next legal or illegal pitch and all defensive players had left the field he became a legal player

RULE 4.7 • SUBSTITUTES
B1.
Offense - If the unreported player is discovered by the defense before the offensive manager, coach or player in violation informs the umpire and:

c. He has completed his turn at bat and after the next legal or illegal pitch, or after the defensive team has left the field, the unreported substitute is officially in the game and any advance of a runner as
a result of the play is legal.
Thank you B. J. !
That’s what I argued also…Unsuccessfully. I also argued 4.7B1a. that he was in the game that way ( assuming the 1-1 count)since he hadn’t completed his at bat . I was unsuccessful in that argument as well.

In fairness with the exception of that particular older umpire who’s nerves and inexperience showed at the coin flip ( king seat game of 60 major plus) we had VERY Good umpires in 5 of our 6 games. One particular umpire who was younger, named Jerry, did a very good job all weekend as did Rudy.

And a fun time was had by all!
So does that rule apply to a defensive substitution too? Say a defensive player forgets to report in, and is undiscovered by the batting team? Is he officially in the game after one pitch?
Gavin5,
My understanding is that the unreported defensive sub must make a play ( not just enter the game) and then the offensive team must protest before the next legal pitch, or the play stands and he’s in the game. This is outlined in rule 4.7 .2 on page 27 of SSUSA RULE BOOK.
There’s a potential penalty if the unreported sub makes a play and the offense protests in a timely fashion. However the unreported sub becomes officially in the game at that time.
