Discussion: What’s the Correct Call?

Team at bat has their dugout gates open. Runners on first and second. Batter his a ground ball and defense makes a bad throw and ball goes into batting teams dugout. Umpire awards extra bases to all runners. Why should the offense be rewarded for leaving their gates open? Umpire said it made no difference which teams gates are left open. If that’s the case, I suggest keeping your gates open when at bat. I also suggest making a rule against it.

On an errant throw from an infielder on a ground ball that goes out of play it’s a dead ball, the batter-runner and all runners on base advance two bases from the time of the pitch.
In your scenario the runner at second scores, runner at first goes to third and batter-runner goes to second.
When I ump it’s all bats & everyone in the dugout except for the on-deck batter and keep the gates closed.
Understood. If that’s the case, the batting team should never keep the gate closed.
Dbax.. I have never rewarded extra bases to the team at bat I tell them in the pre-game meeting to keep their gates closed if the defense were to leave thier gate open then I would award the extra bases
B. J. That’s exactly what should be done. But the director said there is no such rule.
That could be a good strategy!!!
Dbax.. you shouldn't need a rule.. just use common sense
Common sense would be to leave the gates open when batting.
