WHAT IS THE RULE WITH SSUSA?

IF A BATTER HAS 2 STRIKES AND FOUL TIP HAPPENS. IS HE OUT?

THE BATTER HAD 2 STRIKES, THE BATTER SWINGS AND FOULS THE BALL DIRECTLY BACK TO MY CATCHER,MY CATCHER CAUGHT THE BALL (NOT OVER THE BATTERS HEAD). THE UMPIRE SAID HE IS NOT OUT.HE HAS 1 TO WASTE. BUT THE RULE BOOK SAYS HE IS OUT ON THE FINAL STRIKE. WOULDN'T THAT BE A FINAL STRIKE? IT IS IN ALL OTHER ORGANIZATIONS.

I am not an umpire. But in my opinion, he's out.

He is not out if it is his courtesy foul (waste foul). See rule 7.4(c), which says a foul tip can be a waste foul.

IF HE HAS ONE TO WASTE WHY IS THERE A FOUL TIP RULE. BECAUSE IF HE FOULS THE BALL WITHOUT ONE TO WASTE, HE IS OUT ANYWAY.
THE RULE DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.
JUST MY OPIONION

ADVIL.. HE IS GIVEN A WASTE FOUL BECAUSE OF STARTING WITH A 1-1 COUNT

6.2 • PITCH COUNT
Batters are allowed 3 balls and/or 2 strikes. All batters start with a 1 1 ball/strike count. There will be one "waste foul" available to a batter after there are two strikes in the count.

B.J. I understand the batter has a waste foul. But a foul tip is different. That's the part of the rule I don't agree with.

don,t care if it is a foul tip or a foul pop-up..if you have 2 strikes already and it is caught,,your out and that's it.....how can it be otherwise.......that waste is for uncaught balls...not caught you get 1 more...caught you get to sit down

mad dog.. a FOUL TIP that is caught with 2 strikes already on the batter is not an out if he hasn't used his waste foul.. if the batted ball went back to the catcher but over the batters head and was caught he'd be out as in any foul ball catch

I thought the new rule was change of direction. If the catcher catches it regardless of height, it is an out.

ocwill.. I don't think the new 2025 rule book has been released yet?? but below is from the 2025 rules summary and at bottom is the 2023-24 rule book

BALL/STRIKE COUNT
• Batter starts with 1-1 count. He is al
lowed one foul ball (a courtesy or waste
foul) once he has two strikes.
• Courtesy foul hit backward still must
go over the batter’s head to be caught
for an out, just like other foul tips.

1.29 • FOUL TIP
A foul tip is a batted ball that goes directly from the bat, not higher than the batter's head, to the catcher's hand(s) or glove and is legally caught by the catcher. EFFECT: The ball is dead on all foul tips and the batter is out if it is the
final strike.

I got my new 2025 rule book in the mail months ago and the 2025 Rules Summary has been posted on this board for months now.

John.. yes and I posted the rules summary above.. if the new book is out why do they still have the 2023-2024 version for the PDF digital file on this site.. probably DD's fault.. :)
