Discussion: Carson City

What age divisions will be playing in Carson City for the Rockin Reno tournament this year?
We'll take a look at that shortly after the entry deadline on Wednesday, 04/30/25 when we have accurate team counts ... NOTE: We will NOT be using Shadow Mountain Softball Complex this year, resulting in more games/divisions playing at Reno, Golden Eagle and Carson City facilities ... Some Session #2 (Men's 65+ and more senior divisions) will most likely play in Carson City ...

Where are the 60’s playing? I live in the Reno area and the Carson City fields are not very good. I don’t understand why they put us older guys out there. We should be a Golden Eagle.
See my message immediately above and check back in a week or so.
Ben, They won't tell you where you are playing until after you pay, because if teams knew they had to play at the horrible facilities in Carson City, many would not attend. JMO
INCORRECT- Posting of field locations has nothing to do with money (which, by the way is an extremely tired argument made by too many uninformed folks).

Here's the deal- A significant number of teams enter the tournament in the final week before registration closes and those late arriving entries impact decisions as to who plays where. SSUSA used to post TENTATIVE park locations but was often criticized by folks that weren't familiar with that term. These days, they wait until registration closes before reviewing the list and posting any field assignment decisions.
SSUSA,
Is it problematic to move all tournament registration deadlines to a month earlier or more? At the very least, for tourneys with venues in dual cities? This would help teams tremendously.

Every year I reserve lodging at both possible locations for several SSUSA events before they fill up, and I lose money from one of the non-refundable RV site deposits. Many players are not financially able to reserve multiple lodging and end up driving further than necessary to their games.

We want to be able to opt out from undesirable venues, but airline tickets must be bought in advance of the announced location to get any kind of a good deal. We try to save cost so we purchase airfare as early as possible and don't want to spend extra for refundable tickets. The locations are posted so late because of the registration deadline that it's difficult to opt out.

Our team enjoys rental housing to save money and stay together, but many of the large Airbnb rentals in Reno, Sacramento, Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, Orlando, etc., are taken before we know where we are playing. The tourneys in large cities prevent us from reserving a rental/hotel early because our venue might end up being located an hour drive away from the rental house or hotel we choose.

Please consider moving the registration deadline back so we can know where we play earlier, make plans sooner, and save cost.
LC7,

SSUSA especially Dave doesn't think any of that matters. He has said time and time again that we don't need to know that far in advance, be prepared to play at 8 00 AM at the furthest possible venue from where you might rent. It is their opinion as has been stated when multiple venues are used they are all within driving distance of each other so it doesn't matter where you rent. Find somewhere in between is the rule of thumb when it pertains to SSUSA. You're beating a dead horse as Dave would say.
JohnO ... It all matters, just not as much as some people think, especially when they routinely forget the definition of the word "tentative" if something changes ... Couple that with us blowing by last year's total teams number early this morning and it's even more important to evaluate it in a couple of days when the team counts are accurate and known ... Until then, we'll just cite the late, great legend Bob Woodroof, who said it best when he called it, "..the continuing abuse of the equine corpse.." ... Have fun, fellas! ...

Were the team lists that I saw yesterday prematurely posted? I no longer see it on the tournament site.
I think the deadline was extended to 4/30, so there will be changes to the list.
31Bulls31 ... Yep ... The entries were coming in so fast yesterday, someone in the office triggered the team list to see if any teams had been double booked or overlooked and forgot to toggle it back off ... After today's entry deadline, we'll confirm what happens in the next eight hours and the list will go live and remain so ...

Thanks for all you do DD!!!
Hi Dave Dowell,
To follow up, I fully understand the process and the use of "tentative" in regards to the field assignments, but I'm asking about the feasibility of moving the registration deadline back a month. Is that something SSUSA will consider?
IMO, moving the dates back by 30 days would trigger a new set of problems. Life gets in the way for older players- work, family, injury and bad diagnosis. The roster you think you have 30 days ahead of a tourney RARELY looks the same on game day.

On this park complaint issue, you're suggesting that SSUSA doesn't listen or care.

-People complained about Shadow Mountain, and it has been pulled from the rotation.
-People complained about Sunset 5 and 6 and they were pulled from the rotation
-People complained about Shadow Rock and it might now be the best facility in the Vegas inventory.

SSUSA does hear your concerns and conveys those sentiments to its partners. Not all things can be fixed overnight.

Putting on events requires 5,000 different planning and coordination activities that people just don't understand. Item 5,001 shouldn't be mapping out drive distances from KOA locations to a ballpark that you might be playing at once every 3 seasons.
Hi Tim,
While I appreciate you replying to my message, I have to say it's not very satisfying.

You begin by posting that I don't want what I want, go on to tell me that SSUSA cares, and end by letting me know that your job is very difficult and you don't care enough to even consider my trivial request.

I do want registrations to be moved back to prevent last minute logistics by our team. Our yearly tournament schedule is planned out before the season starts.
Your argument about work, family, injury, etc. does not hold water. All of these things happen whenever the registration ends. If SSUSA
allows roster modifications up to the current deadline, emergency roster changes could be made just like they are now.

I didn't ask for SSUSA to make changes overnight. I simply asked for SSUSA to consider it. Will it cost teams more? Maybe we would be glad to pay. This is a discussion, not a demand.
I didn't come to pick a fight and I hope this post conveys a respectful tone, because that's the spirit in which i'm writing it. The bottom line is moving registration back a month would help our team Immensely. We are not confused about that. Whether SSUSA cares or is able to address it is another issue. Can it be done, to help your customer have a better experience, or not?
LC7 ... Allow me to explain why it's highly unlikely we will be moving entry deadlines even earlier ... I'm the guy who oversees and manages the tournament administration function as it relates to who plays where, the mix of specific divisions at multiple parks, attempting whenever possible to rotate those parks so that teams generally are not "stuck in the same place" annually, matching divisions to appropriate facilities (example: no Major+ at Russell Rd. in Las Vegas so we avoid mortar attacks on vehicles) and trying to honor a multitude of special requests you may or may not know even exist ... Those include LSR's, MRS's and ESR's (late, mid-day and early start requests), split schedules at the same park for teams sharing players across both rosters in different age groups and other random requests seemingly only limited by manager imagination of issues, real or not so much so ... As Tim mentioned, those often arise closer to "tourney time."

Although these do take some time, I am disinclined to advocate pushing entry times even earlier, for a few reasons: [1] In multiple facility venues like Las Vegas and Reno, with gaming opportunity based hotels, I am convinced the (vast?) majority of players stay at the same hotel year-to-year that issues their "Frequent Gambler" card, and are using the housing "issue" as the way to try to get early information on which park for this year ... [2] Moving the times earlier has a notable reduction in the aggregate number of teams attending ... We normally receive around 35% of total entries for an event in the last 10 days of the entry period, because teams (appropriately) prefer to spend their hard-earned entry funds as late as possible ... I am reluctant to ask people to pay even earlier, just so the "anonymous keyboard courage cowboys" can spout their inane mantra of "..it's all about the money with SSUSA.." ... Nothing could be further from the truth ... [3] There's also something inherently inappropriate in my view of asking teams to have two or more entries "front-funded" even before the first event occurs ... That would be the result if we had moved the Reno deadline another month earlier before the Southwest had played ... We're already about four weeks out front of the individual World Championships scheduling, but that's because of the 650± teams playing ... It's not reasonable to extend that to lesser attended events, even larger ones like the Southwest (227), Reno (198) and Phoenix (196), all of which trail the World's by over 420 teams ...

While we certainly respect your stated goal "..to help [the] customer have a better experience..", we believe that moving the deadlines nearly another month earlier is inconsistent with your enhancement theory ... This probably isn't what you want to hear, but it's the current reality ... Thank you for writing, taking the time to read this, and good luck!

Thank you for the reply, Dave.
