While batting in a Championship tournament game there was a delay in the outfield, when play resumed I turned to the home plate ump and asked what the count was. He looked at his hand held counter and told me it was 1 and 2 with a foul to give, the next pitch is hit foul, as I get back in the box to resume my at bat a defensive player yells out that I should be out and points to the 2nd base Ump to rule. After a brief discussion between the two the Home plate ump turns to me and says your out! I then said you're behind the plate and you assured me I had a foul to give, he said he was sorry but I was still out. I walked away from the plate thinking after being told by the home plate Umpire I HAD a foul to give that I should have been given another at bat knowing I needed to keep it fair, what's the consensus here ?
Isn't there a rule that says the umpire's actions can not put a player at a disadvantage, similar to a trapped fly ball in the outfield and an umpire not making it clear to base runners if the ball was caught or not? I would think in your case the home plate umpire should have manned-up and stated that he told you there was a foul to give, thus allowing you to hit. Did you go the the tournament director and ask for help?
even after talking to his partner the HP umpire should have manned up and told the defense that "HE" made an error and told the batter he had a foul to give and that the batter was not out on the foul ball..
I’m curious, did the base umpire initiate their discussion?
I agree with BJ. If the home plate ump told the batter he had a foul to waste, he had a foul to waste!
stick8.. OP says a defensive player.. (as I get back in the box to resume my at bat a defensive player yells out that I should be out and points to the 2nd base Ump to rule.)
BJ,
Ok but I was curious if the base umpire called out the plate umpire (or vice versa) to confer after the fielder pointed to the base umpire to rule.
In this case the fielder could have asked the plate umpire to ask his partner for help but the way the scenario was described it wouldn’t have helped them out..
