Discussion: bat testers.

As directors are so very busy at sanctioned events, i suggest a dedicated "team" to do bat testing. At the larger tourneys, this might require more than one team. Make it known where they will be and maybe do a schedule by team for testing. The way schedules usually run, teams arrive for play on a stagger system and often play back to back and are usually "early "for games. We already have to check in with ID" so if you are aware that you will be getting tested, a team can come prepared. Add a visible marking system for tested bats would make it a one time event at that event. This is a new and growing process, so I hope all will be understanding!
Curty,

Why would a "team" do the testing. It would 100% fall on SSUSA to pay someone to do their testing. First off you can't expect a team to get there hours early to test bats for other teams. Then you have the trust factor could come into play. 90% of the reason they are testing is to get cheaters out of the game so how would you ensure that the selected team would be honorable enough to fairly and accurately test bats. We've already seen examples of certain members of this forum come out and admit that if their friends and teammates were swinging shaved bats they wouldn't say a word about it and still play with them.

I still stand by my statement in another post about this. IF this is truly about safety and we as players could be asked to surrender our bats for further testing if they fail testing then SSUSA needs to test every SSUSA stamped bat players bring into the complex just like every other association does that tests bats. If you bat fails compression there is no penalty but it's marked permanently with a "Not Legal for SSUSA Play" and given back after the tourney is over. All bats that pass will be stickered for each tourney or once a month. Its very easy to have a battery engraver onside and you mark the bat.
There would be no doubt every bat being used is legal because it would have a sticker on it. Make them the type of stickers that if you peel them off the sticker is ruined so it's not transferrable to another bat or person. Takes under a minute to test a bat.
I don't want to hear about the cost of testers or paying a person to test bats for the day. SSUSA expects us as players to find a way to gain access to a tester to make sure our bats are legal and it's far harder for an individual person to purchase a bat tester than an association as large as SSUSA.
If a bat has a chance to be surrendered because of failing compression then SSUSA needs to have a way for players to test their bats so they know they are swinging legal bats especially considering how much money we have to pay to play here than any other association.
first- when i say a team of bat testers, it would be a SSUSA extension of field personnel, NOT PLAYERS. A dedicated team might have more than one tester available, and as Player's check in for roster, their bats can be tested. If you test your bat with a nonapproved tester, there is no reliability there, but it might uncover a bat you can't use, a smart move in my mind. Also,- no penalty, if removed before tournament use. If a bat fails, why would you want it back? It can't be used for a sanctioned event. If the owner is cheating, you don't think he should be penalized? The proof is in the pudding. Bats will fail without any tampering, are still unusable, and should be examined to find out why. And- a " once a month sticker" would open another door. Needs to involve current tourney.
Curty,

That makes more sense about the "team" being SSUSA people but that would then require them to spend more money like I said before which ultimately will come out of our pockets like everything else.
Why would you not want the bat back, it's yours you paid for it. Not SSUSA it's not their property. If the pretest bats before hand and they fail I would be willing to let them mark it in a way they see fit that doesn't harm the integrity of the bat saying it can't be used in SSUSA.
To your point, Off the top of my head there is ISSA, NSA, PSA, One Nation, SPA, USSSA, TPSSA that all have Senior divisions that don't have bat testing so something testing 135 or whatever number can still be used in those associations because it's not cheating it's legal by their rules. You can also use bats that have failed compression as your BP bats as well until they break if the only association you play is SSUSA.. Just because a bat fails compression doesn't mean it doesn't have uses.
JohnO28- I agree! It is silly to take a bat that has not entered into a game. If the bat testing is completed before that players first game and it fails compression there is no reason to take the bat. It is a waste of time and money. Just mark the bat as not eligible or no sticker or whatever the method is of marking a bat. I had a few bats tested for sh*ts n giggles. One was 125! Wow! I owned that bat since brand new and it was less than 8 months old. It looked great! We were all shocked. retested multiple times in shock. I put another bat in and it was around 180. I would have never suspected it to be that low, didn't even know it is possible. lol I'd be pretty pissed If I had that tested at a tourney and the bat was taken because it tested too low before I ever even stepped into a dugout. A simple, "nope, failed compression" would suffice.
time to start marking bats with decals before every tourney just like some tourneys make you wear a bracelet on your wrist...if you go to the plate without a sticker or decal on the bat, you are kicked out of the game/tourney...enough of the games...make a definitive system and enforce it....change the colors of the stickers every tourney and it's simple if you want to get bad bats/players out of the game...no sticker/no play...pretty simple idea that many have said already
JohnO28 you are correct. SSUSA tests the bats before every tournament, The bats pass compression it gets the OK to use sticker for that tournament. The bat failed compression, the bat is confiscated and marked illegal to use in SSUSA Tournaments. It's unnecessary for any suspension, unless after the illegal stamped bat is used in tournaments!!!
s3fernandez,

I think there might be a word or something missing. SSUSA does NOT test prior to tourneys, I believe you were agreeing with me but theres a word or two missing..
"EXACTLY"

The magic number on bat testing is 140. I have a few question concerning the testing and I'm asking
these questions I wanna know if this testing is fair for all players.

*If you test one bat you need to test all the bats, its only fair. Why is there only a select few bats being
tested?

*If there is two testing machines being use at a park are both machines calibrated to read exactly
the same. If one tester reads out at 141 and the other tester reads out at 139 how is this fair for one
tester that says your bat is legal the other tester says your bat is illegal and your looking at the senior
softball death sentence?

* Are all testers at all the parks calibrated to read the same ?

* Is the person testing the bats certified/trained on operating the tester?

* How often is the testing machine or machines calibrated?

* Are the testing machines certified by and independent testing company?

Just trying to figure out if I need to buy a new bat every 6 months or what the answer is because just
looking at a bat you won't be able to tell if its legal or not and I don't want find out at the park.
