Discussion: Batting or fielding team leaves their gate open by accident
Looking for a ssusa rule number that applies to this situation. Overthrown ball to first base goes out of play by exiting the playing field through a gate that was accidently left open by the home team, Same thing when a an overthrown ball to third base leaves the field due to the visitor team leaving their gate open.
NancyAllen ... Can you and Butch Drake handle this one? [grins]
south florida.. the home or visiting team have nothing to do with it.. It is determined on whether it was the offense or defense that left it open.. if it was the defense I would award bases if it was the offense I would have a dead ball and keep the runners at the base that they had attained before the ball went into the dugout
I would respectfully disagree with BJ’s answer. It is not the umpire’s job to determine who left a gate open. Their job is to determine if the ball goes out of play and then award the appropriate bases. On the same note, a good umpire will remind players about things like closing gates and keeping equipment in the dugout.
Dbrown5.. in a pre-game meeting with both mgrs. I go over what is REQUIRED by both teams and that is 1 of the issues mentioned.. I would never reward the offense extra bases when they are the ones who left their gate open and just the opposite for the defense..
If that is something you are specifically discussing in pre-game then I agree. Thanks for the clarification.
Dave, hey, you and I handled it on Diamond 3. Ricky could not argue with Do you think that he was smart enough to leave that gate open knowing that the shortstop would overthrow it? They have new fencing and think that gate is gone. Thank you, fond memory.
