Terry and SSUSA Staff,

Thank you for the Bat Testing Article in the latest SSUSA newsletter. It has been a little confusing to this point, so good job clarifying everything. And thanks for working to make things safer on the field, much appreciated.

Good Luck to All at Worlds

Take Care, Glen

Still no reason to confiscate the Bat. Mark it with an "X". Can't be used DONE! Taking it and sending it ANYWHERE is just redundant if bat is disqualified and Marked with "X" or some other indicator.

The only to rule out if the bat has been altered is to send it in for further inspection. Not much of a deterrent for those that have a shaved bat if they know that if the bat doesnt pass the compression test, it will only get a mark on it so it cant be used in the future.

Another reason for further testing is from reading about the bats that failed and were taken for testing was that there were bats that failed at 1st but then passed when they were retested under a more controlled environment. If they were not retested, these bats would have been deemed illegal when actually they were ok.

AJC, I have owned a bat compression tester for just over 4 years and I have tested well over 1000 bats. 2 things are common on non cracked bats,

1. Barrels test differently in different spots around the barrel due to manufacturing or players not rotating the bat evenly after each swing. I see over n over bats that test lower by 15-25 #s between the manufacturer name n model name. I think some players just get used to looking at the bat a certain way in their hands.

2. Physical temperature of the bat matters. Ever see those guys with a shinny foil lined box aka bat hot box or a bat warming sleeve? That make the barrel more plyable n reduces the compression #. So if your in Vegas n it is 100° out n ur trunk is 120° with ur bat inside, expect that your bat will test 10-15% lower than if ur bat is at 60°. So a bat failing compression in 100° weather, can be retested in a cool office environment n easily pass. Example 135 #s hot n 150 #s cold.

My advise. If you have a soft barrel bat that is giving you fast exit speeds, don't swing it in the heat. There is no "un-Xing" a failed bat if it is tested.

BTW I recently tested about 80 SSUSA bats at a local tournament here in sunny NorCal that failed. A dozen with no cracks, no chips, most of them from trusted players n they were at 110-135 #s

USAMTZ, appreciate the info ! Its all the more reason that im glad they will retest bats that initially failed the compression test. Im bringing a favorite bat that must be 4 years old. I dont use it a lot and never in bp, but it still is a great bat. If SSUSA was marking failed bats at inspection without and further yesting, id probably leave it at home just to be safe.

Thanks again for the info, good luck in Vegas !

Better load up on wooden bats, I don't see anything good coming out of all this bat testing, your damned if you do damned if you don't.
I see it now if a 65/70 year old hits a laser through the infield and the third baseman and shortstop barely react, the defensive team will call time out and have the bat check its just around the corner.

Hi Mr. Hennessey, Will SSUSA be testing bats for Worlds Sept. 20th 40 men division? SSUSA randomly tested some bats during the Eastern Nationals. Should I let my players know what to expect.

In my opinion if your bat tests under 140 you shouldn't be using such a soft bat.
So far this year I haven't seen any bats tested. Maybe Vegas will be different.

Bruce,

Some seniors need barrels that soft to even take advantage of the trampoline effect. If you can't compress the barrel then having composite bats do nothing for you. While I agree 140 is low but I'm also not an older Senior that might struggle with compressing the barrel but hope that I will be playing til I'm old enough that I need that 140 barrel compression
