Sept. 29, 2022 RetiredDawgs 2 posts | Runner returning to first base to avoid force out Situation: Runner on 1st base. Batter hits a fly ball to the shortstop in shallow LF. Runner breaks for 2nd but attempts to return to 1st base after the catch. The SS's throw is up the first base line and the first baseman catches the throw and steps backward toward the bag but hits the orange bag and runner makes it back to the bag before the defensive player can move their foot to the white bag. Safe call or out? Thanks |
Sept. 29, 2022 DaveDowell Men's 70 4312 posts | OUT ... After any initial play at first base involving a batter/runner, the two bags (orange and white) are merged to a single bag ... Offense and defense may utilize either/both with equal effect ... To be a bit picky, the play you describe is NOT a force play ... A force play ONLY occurs when a base runner is required to advance to the NEXT base ... This base runner is retreating to tag up ... |

I was told the orange bag was a dead bag to both once it has been reached. Never heard the merge to 1 bag. Thanks for clarification. |
Sept. 30, 2022 DaveDowell Men's 70 4312 posts | §8.4(1) • BATTER-RUNNER REACHING FIRST BASE Each batter must reach first base without the aid of a courtesy runner. A double bag shall be used at first base, the double portion of the bag being in foul territory abutting first base. If there is a play on a batter-runner going to first base, the batter-runner must touch some portion of the double bag extending into foul territory. He will be called out if he fails to do so, except if, in the umpire's judgment, the batter-runner is avoiding a collision. The batter-runner simultaneously touching both portions of the double bag is permitted. This is NOT an appeal play. Important: The defending player has only the white base, in fair territory, to make the putout; his touch of only the bag in foul territory will not result in an out. Once the batter-runner reaches first base, the double base shall be treated as one base and the fielder or runner may use either portion. |
