3 69 yr Olds able to play 70 age group next yr
Wish you would really consider adding 2 or 3 69 yr Olds to 70s Roster so I will be able to fill a team for next yr. Thanks Mark Dobelbower 65 AA coach of OKC OUTLAWS

I just posted a similar request. SPA does it, and we would go to more SSUSA tournaments if that was available. Jim Kupiec Chicago Hitmen 70's

I too am anxious to hear when this will go into affect. We would be able to play SSUSA tournaments this year. It would be great if it could be used in the February TOC.

Gentlemen ... There has been NO DECISION made yet on whether or not to allow underage players to participate on 70+ SSUSA teams ... This issue, and several others, have been referred to an SSUSA National Rules Committee member to meet with other associations regarding roster and playing rules consistency ... The goal is to find common rules and regulations for the possibility of jointly sanctioned qualifying events ...

SSUSA made initial contact with a SPA representative on Tuesday, but no formal meeting schedule has been established ... The probable timeline will be early in 2022 and, depending on progress, any decisions could be forthcoming in the Spring ... Generally, SSUSA rules revisions are made only once annually, in late November/early December for the following Season ... It's unclear if that would be the case here ... Thanks!

P.S. - Jet: The T.O.C. is a 2021 Season event and will be played under the 2021 Rules ... Any player would have had to have been 70+ eligible (not 69) DURING 2021 to be considered for that event ...

IMO If there is rule change to allow 69 year olds on a 70 team I suggest this be for AA only.

70's are in terrible shape to fix it you might allow 3 69's in each division but in AA AAA & major you can only play 70's if you are major plus then you can play down that way keep the ringer's out 69 yr old player playing in in major plus would be ok to play down.

you don't want any 69 yr old major plus guy's playing in 70 major or 69 yr old major player playing in AAA or 69 yr old AAA player playing in AA. The double AA 69 yr old could play where ever he wanted to play in 70's But you definitely need more people playing in 70's division.

Is this topic still under discussion? Why not start slow and allow at least (1) 69 year old play with the 70s and see how it goes?

Not so fast Rickey ... There's a lot more relevant information lurking behind the scenes on this than anyone commenting here has even touched on yet ... We're doing the proper due diligence and won't be rushing anything ... But we've got plenty of time, if we do anything, since the next round of scheduled National Rules Committee sessions are 11½ months away ... We'll keep you posted as appropriate ... Merry Christmas! ...

I can see both points on this issue but since we are in changing times with Covid and other issues this country is facing I would like to see SSUSA give this a sample try in 2022 allowing one 69 year old to play 70s. Just my $.02

Merry Christmas everybody.

Thanks:

Dave, your last post on this topic was about a month ago and it stated we may hear something early 2022. Just wondering if allowing a 69 year old playing on a 70s team is still ‘in the works’. I sure hope so and it would be wonderful if it could implemented for this coming 2022 season.
Thank you

Jet ... No decision(s) made yet ... SSUSA and SPA have had a preliminary discussion on this topic with the goal of finding a consistent rule for both associations ... SPA currently allows three (3) underage 69-year-old players and has recently repealed the (new this year) former requirement that the player actually attain his age 69 birthday before joining a 70+ team ...

SSUSA has respectfully asked SPA to consider a 1-year phase-out the underage player exception ... The 69's playing up would be allowed for SPA this Season, but not thereafter, if they agree to enact our suggested approach ... As it relates to SSUSA only, my personal opinion is that it's unlikely we would approve a number that high (3) for just the 2022 Season ...

A multitude of other SPA v. SSUSA playing rules were also discussed and resolved, with both parties now optimistic that we will be able to jointly sanction SPA/SSUSA Qualifiers as early as this Season ...

It seems like allowing 69s to play 70s early reduces the player pool for 65+ especially since 65s and 70s play the same tournament dates. So.... it would increase the 70s player pool while decreasing the 65s player pool. The 65s pool is already stretched thin and the potential "play 70s a year earlier" would stretch it even thinner.

Another thought --- do we do something similar and allow a certain number of "play early" in 50, 55, 60, and 65 as well. Personally, I think the eligibility should remain as it has been. Just my thoughts.

Mayhem 65+ Major could definitely benefit from being able to have one or two or three 64 year olds who won't be 65+ eligible until 2023. And.... the 60+ play different tournament days than 65+ so these players could play both age groups. My thought is that if 69s are allowed to play 70s early, let's also allow 64s to play 65s early. Perhaps expand it to all age divisions.

Fuzz ... A brief history lesson for you ... The "underage" player exemptions were instituted about 10-15 years ago for the sole purpose of helping in the formation of new/more 80+ division teams ... A limited number of 78+ and 79+ age players allowed per team was well received and the 80+ division grew, over time, to be quite healthy ... And then the 75+ teams asked for a similar accommodation under the theory that they were now short players because of the traditional 77's and 78's moving up to 80's "early" ... So we granted a maximum of five age 74's for each 75 team ... This pattern being imposed on younger agr groups resulted in a "trickle down effect" on each successive age group ... The underage exemptions were, arguably, no longer needed over time for the healthy viability of the older age division(s) ... For every "youngster" who played up, there is a very real potential that an older player in the affected division is displaced and forced into an older age group in order to play ... We are not unanimously convinced that is the best plan ...

So now here we are, with the 70's asking for three age 69's ... This request is a bit different because the proponents assert a desire to be consistent with the underage exemptions allowed by two other sanctioning associations, specifically SPA and ISSA ... We have had very productive meetings with SPA in the past six weeks and have a basic framework in place for co-promoting events under a shared sanction ... SPA has made a few rules modifications to narrow those former differences ...

We have also asked, and they have agreed to consider, a one year phase-out of their underage player exemption for age 70+ teams ... If enacted, any current 69's playing "older" would be allowed to finish the 2022 Season with the 70+ teams before they would matriculate to 70+ next season when that underage exemption would no longer be needed by those players ... We are hopeful that SPA makes that change, but that's solely their call ... SSUSA will look at this again if/when, SPA decides their course of action ... Realistically, if SSUSA were to allow another age group ( the 70's) to utilize underage players, how many would they allow? ... Three of them might be a bit of a stretch ... We will continue to keep you posted ...

The idea of (3) 69 y/o play w/the 70's is very good concept... What's wrong you SSUSA?

I suggest give it a try allowing one 69 year old and if it works, great and if it does not go well change it back to where we are now.

Thanks:

James, I completely agree. I too would like to see SSUSA allow (1) 69 year old to play on a 70 team for the 2022 season. Then at the end of the year they could evaluate to see if they want to continue on.
