empire/winter nationals
Played over the weekend in fort Myers FL with my 60s team and I have never witnessed such horrible umpiring in all the years that I have been playing organized baseball/softball.It is a shame that teams travel and play their butts and the outcome of the games are decided by one man who has no clue what he is doing. It appeared that he did not know the basic rules and it felt like he just did not care about the games.I know umpiring is not easy, anyone can make a mistake, but this umpire did not make one horrible call, he made several which I believe cost use at least 2 games maybe 3,1 example- runner misses second base, when we appealed he stated "I KNOW HE DID BUT DID NOT SEE IT", that would have been the 3rd out and no runs scored. like I said said umpiring is not easy,1 bad call, it happens. 2 bad calls ok maybe lazy not getting into position to see the play, but numerous calls I call that incompetence. I am sure we were not the only team that had this problem, I heard a lot of yelling from the fields this umpire was working.(or lack of).

An anonymous complaint without verifiable facts in support of the story is a guarantee nothing will happen to improve the situation you describe with this umpire ... Please send an identifiable (as to you and both teams involved in the game) email to the SSUSA Home Office (Send to: info@seniorsoftball.com and put "Umpire Complaint" in the Subject line) ... What tournament day(s)? ... What sports complex and field(s)? ... Specific scheduled game time(s)? ... We will absolutely look into it backwards through the game cards and to the UIC on site ... We appreciate you taking the time to do this ... It's the only way by which your story elevates from a presumptive "loser's lament" to something of value we can use to improve the umpire group ... Thank you ...

I played with caloosa cooling, games were on Saturday and I believe we were on field 1 and one game was against
vecter scorpions. as per loser lament, I woke up on Sunday and my family was healthy. In others words the wins and loses do not matter. Its a matter of principle. I have no problem with the SSUSA organization.

hitking ... I did some casual research prior to the official paperwork getting back to California from Florida ... Your team was 1-5 in the event and had a modest negative average run differential of (-3.88 RPG) ... The only close games, win or lose, were the Friday afternoon (3:30 PM - #4) loss to Champaign, IL (21-22) and the Saturday morning (9:30 AM - #1) loss to Cincinnati (11-12) ... Everything else was decided by at least a touchdown or larger margin ... Should I be looking for the same umpire signing both of those game cards? ... Thanks ...

ssusa staff.I was just posting my personal opinion about the umpire, not looking for a investigation I know what your record was. my frustration was that if the umpire in question had done is job properly the outcomes might have been different since they were made with 2 outs, touchdown margins might have been different and the one run game surely would have. winning or losing a tournament will not changed my life I play cause I love the game and the friendships we make along the way. I have won some and lost some . I consider this subject closed, like I posted before its the principle. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THE SSUSA ORGANIZATION OR STAFF.

We never thought you had a "problem" with SSUSA ... We believed you were letting us know so that we might look into it to improve the umpire talent pool through [1] umpire education or [2] eliminating future use of sub-standard umpires ... It now seems this may have been just option [3] a frustration rant ... We're OK with that, too! ... We now also consider the matter closed ... Good luck this season! ...

Before I get to the issue at hand, I would like to compliment the field staff and the quality of the fields at the CenturyLink complex. The weather and field conditions were spectacular for the weekend groups. I was also involved with the early week groups as player/scorekeeper and manager and considering the storm, it only knocked out 1 day of playingEven after a 1 hour rain delay on tues., the fields were quite playable. Scores were posted, realigned schedules were posted expeditiously so kudos to staff and grounds crew and the refreshment guy did a great job too.

Now on to the umpiring. We had a similar experience as hitking in our semifinal winners bracket game Sat 2 pm field 2.The umpire seemed in over his head from the beginning when he made a call for us that he blew and on the next play made make-up call against us. As the game continued, more incorrect calls and I'm not sure when the UIC came over, but was watching sitting directly behind the backstop. This game was a nail biter all the way, and even had an individual tossed from the game. Dave, I'm not sure if both managers read this message board, andI get the proper protocol you described above so I will forward it on to my team manager. If neither does, I do hope you will contact the UIC as I did see her addressing the situation with that umpire after the game and I know he did speak to my teams manager afterwards either late Sat or Sun.

I would also like to pay tribute to the team we played that game. It was an emotional game for reasons other than softball, the competition was intense, the camaraderie special and many nice people on and off the field.

PS - 1 umpire stood out heads and tails above the rest, don't know his name - a relatively young guy who umped both our games on Sunday (his partner in the championship game also did a wonderful job!) While we were waiting for our final game, a player or manager came over to the directors table and also gave kudos for that umpire.
