Batters box
We have had discussions about a tournament where the umpires said that there is no front to the batters box. In other words if the batter moves up in the batters and who certainly would be out of the box completely when he makes contact with the ball. Is not out. Is this true?

If this is SSUSA sanctioned play, what you have is an umpire who is either:
1. Grossly uninformed;
2. Highly incompetent;
3. Lazy;
4. Making the rule(s) up as he/she goes along; or
5. ALL OF THE ABOVE ◄ My favorite answer!

The front of the batter's box must be observed and enforced for Pitcher Protection ... It's inconceivable and unacceptable for an umpire in SSUSA sanctioned play (and probably a lot of other association sanctions) to make this type of erroneous assertion ... CURIOSITY QUESTION: At which tournament was this "curious" and dangerous rule interpretation in play? ... Thanks!

At Utah one umpire interpreted the same as geeksquad stated . His only caveat to his Rule interpretation was that the batter would only be called out if he hit the pitcher.

and by then it's to late damage done.. in the future if an umpire tells you that I'd ask for the UIC or Tour. Dir. and see what they have to say

They do have a lot of lazy umpires some off this umpires don't leave the behind home plate to make a call on second base. When I use to umpire I would run to second to make the call

"walking the box or stepping out of the box does not necessarily mean that you're "hitting the middle" or "at the pitcher". I've seen hitters called out for being out of the box. I've been called out for being "out of the box" but, never seen a hitter called for unintentionally hitting the middle.(in or out of the box)

I would say with some degree of certainty that more hitters are out of the box than within the box (lines) with no harm done nor intended.
