Discussion: "Illegal" player?
I noticed that a player who is listed as a sub on the lineup card and has not been substituted is now playing left field and has caught a couple of fly balls. I pointed this out to the umpire who wasn't sure what to do? Comments?
Mike ... Here's a reading assignment for you that should answer your questions ... The references are to the relevant SSUSA Rule Book sections ...
• §1.38 • Illegal Substitute Definition on Page 7
• §4.7B.2. • Substitutes Playing Rules (Defense) on Page 27
Mike, please also look at the 2019 rules committee minutes. The change to the unreported substitute rule is on the last page. Look under the tournament tab and click on the rules tab under it.
D & D - Got it, thank you.
SSUSA should consider changing the rule that a substitute who is in the game legally be only an unannounced substitute, not an ejection. That's too stiff of a penalty for players who have spent a lot of money to travel and play a few games.
Wayne ... You're about nine months late to the party on this one ... That rule was amended (as you suggest) at the National Rules Committee sessions last November in Las Vegas by a 10-1-0 vote ...
Thanks Dave. I believe I had an older version of the rules saved to a file on my phone. Downloaded the newest version now.
Omar, two things to remember. 1) Runners may advance legally when the ball is touched. 2) Don't leave the playing field until the umpire calls catch or no catch.
