Aug. 26, 2020 SKings24 60 posts | Player Rankings & Team Rosters I know we will see excuses as to why but if other associations can do it why not SSUSA 1) Post team roster I feel all teams should be able to see rosters across the board and player rankings 2) Player Rankings as all coaches should be aware of who they can or can't pick up. Too many times players are getting re-ranked and they have no idea. Major team at their limit of Major Plus and no idea a certain player(s) have been re-ranked to Major. Puts teams behind the 8 ball when building a competitive roster. Seems as tho information is hidden and coaches are not given the tools to build a proper team, or players questioning teams rosters as they know the previous year certain players played Major Plus but didn't hold the rank. THus not being able to let thier coaches know players are available. |
Aug. 26, 2020 SSUSA Staff 3466 posts | Sorry to disappoint, but no "excuses" coming your way SKings24 ... We simply make a conscious policy decision to NOT randomly publish that player personal data ... No hidden agenda or deprivation of "tools" involved ... Other associations (according to you) take a different publication approach, and that's perfectly fine, too ... You appear to favor that approach, and we don't ... Nothing complicated at all ... Stay safe and good luck! |
Aug. 28, 2020 SKings24 60 posts | This is the hidden agenda make teams feel certain players who should be Major Plus last year are now ranked as Major this year putting us to think what is going on and how did this happen. At least the other associations are open and honest to what a player is rated. Not hard to post the Name and Rating of each player and when they get re-rated it gets updated for all to see. Its not Personal Data as you call it. Seems like SSUSA has its own agenda and the sheep will follow. |
Aug. 28, 2020 TimMcElroy 942 posts | Have you ever noticed that the closer you get to a world tournament (with the other associations) that those previously public rosters disappear from the website? There's a reason for that.... I've been a director for other (younger) associations and can tell you from experience that public roster posting is a hassle. There are 1,000 roster gurus out there that have nothing better to do than peruse rosters and give their expert opinion on why this guy or that guy shouldn't be allowed to play at "X" level. In most cases, those opinions are self-serving. Once that guy posts on the internet, a new group of gurus is born, and another round of the game is played. SSUSA is understaffed and overworked. They are dealing with problems that none of us envisioned a few months ago, and some that many of us still haven't thought of. You are giving them far too much credit if you think that they have the time or desire to play puppet master on rosters to give certain teams an advantage. |
Aug. 28, 2020 DaveDowell Men's 70 4296 posts | Well, I suppose this could be an interesting theoretical discussion IF the SSUSA rated individual players ... We don't and have no plans to do so in the foreseeable future ... We do, however, keep track of the ratings of the teams players participate with during the time of their participation ... Maybe this is something we would consider is we ever DO start rating individual players, but not before then ... It would be a logical conclusion to reach that you are simply frustrated (not to be confused with any sort of "hidden agenda" by us) at not being able to do your own roster reviews ... Is it possible that's the real agenda here? ... P.S. - Tim, you are about 102% correct in your observations and analysis ... Thanks! |
Aug. 28, 2020 HSquared Men's 60 147 posts | Just curious... How many "active/paying" PLAYERS are registered with SSUSA? |
Aug. 28, 2020 DaveDowell Men's 70 4296 posts | H² ... This is an odd year by which to judge, since many players renew their card just before the first event they play ... Lots of people aren't having that "first event" this year ... The player database contains a shade over 30,000 player names that have had an "active" participation year sometime in the past five years, which is the maximum registration term allowed ... There are normally 22,000± active players in a "normal year" ... |
Aug. 28, 2020 HSquared Men's 60 147 posts | D² & Tim... With those kinds of numbers, it certainly makes admin a "full-time" (and yes, subjective) job. |
Aug. 29, 2020 Omar Khayyam 1357 posts | Seems so easy to rank a player, doesn't it. Most of us can gauge talent if we follow a few players through a tournament or two and see what they contribute. But following 30,000 players!!! What SSUSA does is rank teams and that is much easier but still subject to second guessing. Take the tournament scores...then judge the quality of the competition...then the luck of the seeding...then weather conditions (want to judge hitters if the sun is low in the sky directly behind the pitcher? Outfielders if the game is played in rain on sloppy conditions). And then try to adjudicate the many complaints of over-rated and under-rated teams. But to judge an individual...was he active this year? How many tournaments? How many at bats? Defensive opportunities? Distracted by a failing relationship? Doesn't get along with team? Chokes in pressure situations? On and on. Then deal with the vagaries of life. Is he injured? Recent surgery? Overweight? Diseased? or in reverse...cured from disease? Successful operation? Lost some weight? or the inevitable...starting to age badly and losing speed, or arm, or bat power, or dementia setting in. So many variables. I doubt if any association can reliably rate most players and I would guess that they would be second-guessed on more than half of their ratings. |
