When can we expect 40's 50's 55's 60s'
schedules for WESTERN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2020 st. George and Mesquite?
Soon • Opening day is still over two weeks away • However, you may treat the TENTATIVE Field Assignments as FINAL now, so long as the governmental entities in NV and/or UT don't get involved with the scheduling ...
"Soon" turned out to be last night! ... First DRAFT schedules and brackets are online now ... Good luck!
Looking at the 50 bracket...wasn't there 1 50aa team? Did they drop out?
TD. Tom ... There still is ... Team Panthers (UT) 50-AA asked to play round robin games with the 55-AAA and then a Best 2 of 3 Championship Series with the 55-AA Spin Tees (WA) under "AA" rules with an equalizer ... Their request was granted ...
Adding grist to the rumor mill, I've heard through sources that Mesquite is out for a location. If this is true when and where are the games for the replacement games going to be held?
Signed Termite in a YoYo.
Mikelmart: You are NOT helping the situation at all with unsubstantiated rumors! Please for the sake of all the teams and people attending keep your rumors and sources to yourself and let SSUSA get the TRUTHFUL information out to everybody when and if needed.
someone asked on the thread that was closed a question on whether or not the baseball fields at Pioneer and Hunter were being used. In looking at the schedule, they are definitely being used. There are 6 total fields in Mesquite at Pioneer and Hunter combined-- 2 softball fields and 1 baseball field at each park. I see at both locations all three fields are in play. In the past, temporary fences have been put up at Pioneer Park to help out. It's harder to do at Hunter since it's turf. Has anyone ever seen temporary fences at Hunter Park on the Baseball field?
Jon44 ... Temp fences at Hunter are a "no-no" because of not being able to punch through the artificial turf sub-structure ... In 10± years working there, I never seen temp fences tghere ... Pioneer? ... YEP, but NOT at Hunter ...
TAT22 I may be helping the situation by actually giving a heads up to an alternative site (St. George) so those scheduled in Mesquite can plan accordingly to have reservations there also,like I do. To use a softball term I'm covering all of my bases.
Discussion at Lorenzi this morning is that the upcoming announcement MIGHT not be good for Mesquite. MAYBE St. G could handle those games after 5PM under the lights. Those younger players handle the lights better.
IF a POTENTIAL shutdown of NV forces USA to find another home for the Worlds, St. G SEEMS to be on a roll right now. With the Huntsman Games cancelled, they MIGHT be interested in some discussions.
For those RV folks out there, the dirt parking lot across from the Little Valley pickle ball courts is used quite often for RV's during the tournaments for that sport. A short walk across the fields to the SB fields and 9 miles from the canyons SB complex.
Your welcome.
DieselDan... Its been mentioned a time or two that the parking lot @ Little Valley is small. Can (will) parking be allowed at the next door school parking lot?
The parking right at the complex might hold maybe 40-50 vehicles. Across the street is another lot for another 20 or so. Depending what teams do for late morning/afternoon BP before their first game, arriving at LV one game before yours is an option. With school possibly not starting until late August, parking at the school might be allowed. That location would easier handle the over flow. Looks like a visit might be in order.
HUNTER Field #3
Other than the turf field means no temporary 300' fencing, haven't seen any info about the size of the whole field. Our player coach a couple of years back told us out fielders not to chase a gapper or over our heads shot. Just go get the ball and let the batter have the ITP HR. The fences are way out there. Both dugouts are far back from the field and the backstop has a separate zip code it's so far back from the plate. The catchers ability may become critical in a game.
DieselDan ... Don't waste too much time theorizing on the outfield fence distances for Fields #3 at Hunter and Pioneer Parks ... It's now pretty much a theoretical discussion only ... Thanks for your insights, though!
Knowing now might limit post tournament complaining.
Agreed ... But you're about a year early at the moment ... [grins]
Back to the parking lot comment H Squared had-- the parking lot at the fields in Little Valley are small. The overflow lot is not big as well and is shared with a larger park with splash pad, soccer fields, etc. There is a middle school next to the fields that some people park at, but for tournaments like huntsman the school puts out warnings that they will tow player cars. I am not saying that sign will definitely be out, but the past few larger tournaments when school is in session they put it up. School actually starts the day before the Friday session, so that could be an issue. If you are playing at Little Valley, get there a few minutes early. The fields are in an area surrounded by very nice homes, so if you have to walk from a side street to the field it will not be too bad.
Little Valley is a wonderful complex-- it's a fun place to play.
Staff, depends on the venue whether fences can be put up on a large field. Redwood City, CA has all turf fields and at the last tournament held there, the 400 foot hardball diamond was converted to 350 feet by use of temporary fences on wheels that lower to ground level for stability. These are multi-use fields (little league, soccer, teen hardball, softball, etc.) so the city bought fences to shorten distances for any of the fields. Expensive but they should last for years. Storage is a bit of a problem, but since this site is in a moderate California climate, they are often stored by just pushing them into an empty corner of a field. They don't even chain them down when not in use since who would steal a 10 foot section of wire fencing? They sometimes chain them together to keep soccer teams from dragging them out to use as practice goals. Seems like Mesquite could do the same thing if the demand was there.
Omar ... Woodland (CA) has a similar (identical?) fencing system and it was nice ... Very expensive, though, as you indiocated ... This year in Mesquite it's not going to be a factor for us since we won't be playing there ...
Omar , you are correct. The temp fences they use on McGarvey ( baseball field ) are a nice setup. You dont run thru those when they are connected. Those had to be very expensive. Its nice to see some of our tax dollars put to work.
Redwood City has always been very kind to softball players, including seniors.
Dave, I saw the sad news about Nevada shutting down Mesquite. Have you seen yet that the competing large Hall of Fame tournament in Manteca, CA, just had the plug pulled on them?
Omar ... I hadn't heard about the NCSSA event cancellation ... That's neither good news nor terribly surprising since it was a scheduled California venue ... Drat!
HSquared Little Valley parking question follow up.
About 100 parking spaces at the LV fields and about 40 across the street. As for the next door school, as long as players park close to the field (as mentioned before) and some openings furthest west from the school entrance, it should be OK. The field behind the school has always been off limits. Schools are scheduled to begin Aug. 13th. The use of this schools parking area has really helped in previous tournaments.
The two soccer fields across the street should be OK for BP I was told. City does not want anyone using the fenced in soccer field.
DieselDan... Thanks for the follow-up and further clarification. Now we will wait and see what changes are in store with Mesquite shutting down.
Bigger question for me is, what about the LVSSA/SSUSA Southwest Championships in Vegas at the end of the month? I trust SSUSA will find a place for us to place and Dave will work his voodoo and we will get the Western Nationals in for all age groups. I, unfortunately, do not have the same feeling for the upcoming SW Champs! Nevada Governor Sisolak will never allow it to happen! Maybe St. George will welcome us back 2 weeks after the Western Champs!
COMPLETE SESSION #2 SCHEDULE RE-DESIGN • The complete re-design of SESSION #2 of the Western National's has been completed to address the COVID-Closure of the Mesquite, NV, facilities on Friday ... We were successful in procuring the 3-field Archie H. Gubler Park complex in Santa Clara and the 2-field Spilsbury Park/American Legion Fields in Hurricane ... In addition to the divisions moving from Mesquite, certain other divisions of play were relocated within St. George to meet the games demand geometry of the re-construction ... Here's what we did under extreme field constraint pressure to "make it work" ... Please don't try this at home! ...
• 60-AAA (13 teams) division moves from Pioneer Park to Gubler Park all three days;
• 60-AA (5) division moves from The Fields at Little Valley to Gubler Park all three days;
• 50-AAA (10) division moves from Hunter Park to the Fields at Little Valley all three days;
• 40-Masters Men (11) division moves from Hunter Park to The Canyons for Friday ... The 40-Majors (8) play at The Canyons all three days ... The 40-Major Plus (3) play at The Canyons on Friday and Sunday and The Fields at Little Valley on Saturday; and
• Women's 40/50+ (6) moves from The Fields at Little Valley to the Spilsbury Park/American Legion fields in Hurricane for Saturday only ... The Women will play at the Fields at Little Valley on Championship Sunday ...
Revised DRAFT Game Schedules and Brackets have been posted ... Thank you for your patience and good luck to everyone! ..
Dave, it was not completely unexpected (no one made hotel reservations) but my team was one of many that chose Manteca over Utah for the exact same dates. As much as I love to play in St. George, there was no enthusiasm for my older team to go to a hotel in Utah for the event. My manager is polling the team again right now with the hope we might get in if players want to go, but so far the polling is saying "skip it".
Omar ... That's not an unusual or unexpected reaction at all ... On the Manteca vs. Western's choice, we were pretty confident that the CA government was going to kill the NCSSA event by wiping out group activities indiscriminately, but we were a little caught off guard by Nevada following suit ... St. George is a heck of a nice "fall back" position though from a facilities perspective ... We'll see if this one hangs on, too ...
At the bottom of the explanation of the new fields, it says the draft and new schedule has been posted..I do not see it. The bracket still says we are at hunter park for the 50aaa teams. Is it the same schedule but at the little fields in Mesquite?
Sorry, Fields at Little valley in Mesquite.
TD. Tom Sorry, Fields at Little valley in St. G. (Last minute changes confuse me at times also.)
TD.Tom ... It is NOT the same schedule as was previously drafted for Hunter Park ... Only one division of play (Men's 60-Platinum @ Bloomington Park)) was undisturbed in this complete revision ... You may have to "refresh" your download to see the most recent version ... On many/most computers, load the page then tap the "F5" function key ... If that doesn't work, do what I do: Call one of my (your) grandchildren to walk you through it!
Guess my question from a couple days ago just got answered. The tournament page shows the Southwest Championships in Vegas at the end of the month cancelled!
Yes it is , just received the email
Was the closure of the Mesquite fields a local or state-wide decision?
Mike ... I don't know ... We were advised of the closure on Friday morning in an email from the Mesquite City Parks and Recreation Dept. ... Whether or not it came from "upstairs", and how far up, is unknown and, quite honestly, irrelevant at the moment ...
Can it get relocated to St George like some other tournaments?
If Vegas doesn’t open for world’s are World’s done or possible relocated?
domer ... [1] The logistics of attempting to move the Southwest Championships anywhere, including St. George, on such short notice made cancellation of this event the only logical decision ... [2] We'll continue to monitor every circumstance and possibility regarding the World Masters Championships as the factual realm unfolds ... Right now, we're operating on the assumption that the Las Vegas area will remain the allowed site of this year's Championships ... If that changes, we'll certainly let you know and react accordingly ... Good luck ... Stay healthy!
Thanks Dave for all you and the senior staff do, I can’t Imagine what you guys had to go through trying to put us on the field this year but I do appreciate the effort. Hope y’all stay safe
Anyone living South of St. G and maybe driving up on the 11th or 14th, may want to leave a little earlier.
