Fond Memories
We’ve been on lockdown for almost three weeks in California and it is getting boring so I went to the park with my tee and a few dozen balls and begin to hit some. A fellow player I know who lives near the ball park came over with his glove and volunteered to shag for me. I was ready to let him hit when a park gardener who is not working got his glove out of his truck and joined in.

The sound of the bat on ball must have been enticing so a couple of guys playing tennis came over and volunteered to shag if they could borrow my glove. I went to the car and got it out of my bag. Another guy started to hit. Unknown to me, my friend near the ball park called some local guys in the club on his cellphone. Pretty soon we had about six guys show up with gloves and bats.

A dad was hitting fungos on the adjacent field with his two young teen sons and they came over ready to play. The rec center manager has an office near the fields and he and two of his staff came over, ready for action. A guy driving by with his buddy in a van stopped and the two of them came over with one glove between them. We realized that we could begin to really play not just shag and hit.

A cop stopped his squad car and walked over. When we told him our plans, he looked blankly at the sky and said “I don’t see more than 10 people” and when we said we would share gloves with those at bat, he took off his belt and badge and started stretching. A couple of older guys who were kicking a soccer ball came over and joined in. An older guy about my age stopped by and shared that his knees were too bad to run with but he used to be an umpire and would ump for us. We could start a real game!!!

Just then I woke up from my dream and looked at the clock radio—8:35:::April 1::: april fool

We had been hitting (weather permitting) at the local city park...until today. I got this email from our coordinator Don today:

Six of us were at the park today when someone from the Parks and Rec dept came by and told us we had to leave. The park is now closed to all outdoor activity with the exception
Of walkers and bicyclists…………No idea when we might be able to play again…….
