Can you players in regular leagues who use a courtesy runner (CR) from the plate, mind sharing your rules with me? We use one and currently our rules are as follows: 1. Plate is positioned 9 feet behind home plate, parallel with the 3rd base foul line, behind and to the right of the catcher's box. 2. CR must have his lead foot always on the plate, behind the front edge of it. 3. CR cannot leave the plate until batter makes contact with the ball. If CR leaves early with his foot off the plate, batter is out. 4. If CR leaves with his foot off the plate when the batter has a swing-and-miss (no contact with ball), batter is out. I appreciate knowing what other leagues do when dealing with CR's from the plate. Thanks in advance, Turbobob |

CR must be touching backstop behind home plate until contact has been made. Our backstop is about 15 feet behind the plate. 3. CR can not get anything more then a single. 4. In our younger league the rule is not used. In our middle league the rule is rarely used. In our oldest league the rule is used on a regular basis. Our oldest league has players as old as 86. The rule is for injured players or for those that have some sort of physical problem that doesn’t allow them to rum for themselves. It is not used just because someone is slow. |

The start line is an imaginary extension of the third base line (makes it easy for umpire to spot violations). Runner cannot start until ball is hit. Any batter can request a courtesy runner from home (almost always uses one in every at-bat except in case of game injury). CR cannot get more than a single unless ball goes out of play, then is awarded second. Same courtesy runner cannot be used more than once in an inning. CR cannot be run for during inning except for injury or if playing with only 10 players on the team. Most of our players needing a runner are permanently disabled as far as running (they catch, pitch, or play corner bags). We used to start the CR farther back as Chico does, but with many older runners, we moved forward to third base line. |
