Knee replacement vs. Stem Cell Therapy
Hey Guys, pondering stem cell therapy for bad knees. Ortho doc says replacements, not if but when. I know it less bucks through insurance versus no coverage for stem cell. I've been to a couple of clinics and discussed the stem cell treatments as a non-invasive alternative. Any stem cell therapy pro or con experiences out there to share??

Again, I appreciate what you've done to your bodies. ;o)

I had the stem cell injection this past April after 6 to 8 months of not being able to run or do ANY crossfit stuff with my legs because of bad arthritis in my lt. knee. 5 weeks after the injections, I was running again and working legs. Also, tore my rt. bicep tendon at the elbow the week before this. I am completely convinced that this procedure made my recovery 3 to 4 times faster. 5 months after having this done, I had a crossfit competition. VERY glad I spent the money to have the injections.

Beejay, there's several factors to consider.First your age & all what the MRI revealed, how bad are your knees. Also if your doc says TKR, you might want a second opinion.I got one,if the're to shot then about the only thing is replacement which sucks! One of my knees finally took a dump & my ortho said I need a replacement. Some guys recover within a yr. & others like me still have a pain yr&half. It all varies on the individual. As for the stem cell therapy it hasn't really been proven to be effective! Also I might mention I tried another procedure that was told to me & it didn't do nothing, like the doctor told me I was wasting my time!

I had a TKR 2 months ago and have been practicing softball for a couple of weeks. I can hit, throw, and field (with limited range), and jog to first base (in pain). I expect to play in Palm Springs in late January. I'm 80.

A friend tried stem cells on both knees and after no improvement after about 8 months decided to do double TKRs three weeks ago. He's 77.

Another friend had both knees replaced 3 years ago and played tournament ball in 3 months. He is now 86.

Another friend had her knee replaced and felt she was not 100% for about a year. She won't tell me her age.

(You might want to see my previous posts that has some details of my recovery.)

Drs. told me during the consult for the stem cell injections that it would regrow cartlige, if cartlige was still there. No cartlige means no regrowth. They also said stem cell would reverse arthritis, and as for my situation, i think this is what happened. My first procudure was the steroid injection, very little help, next was the rooster cone shot, helped for about 3 months, got another rooster cone shot, nothing, then did the stem cells. After 5 weeks, doing what I wanted to do. Hope this helps.

Age 60, sports Dr tells me-- stage 4 osteo arthritis total loss of all cartilage. Only remedy is TKR. Dairy/crop farmer. researched stem cell treatment for 2 yrs. Now age 62, had stem cell treatment both knees 10 months ago. At least 50% improvement. So what went on in my knees? No cartilage to begin with, means no cartilage regrowth. Bone spurs are healed and environment inside knees is now excellent. Do not know how long this will last. Dr hopes 10 yrs.

I have a couple things going for me-- Top 3 or maybe top patient Dr has seen for bone hardness. And also top 3 or top patient for pain tolerance.

Did stem cells from my own bone marrow. Not to bad. Once to the bone(pelvis) you don't feel a thing. Because my pelvis was so hard he had a hard time getting through. You just feel your body rocking with the force of trying to get through the bone. 2 wks prior Dr injected both knees with with something(can't remember what it was) to "wake up the knees and tell my body healing needs to get going. then 2 wks later did stem cells and PRP(plasma rich protein) that visit. Also laser treatments at the end that day. Went back twice for laser at 2 wks and 4 wks. At 6 wks he was happy with my progress, so he did another PRP on both. Have not seen him since.

3 sources of stem cells-Bone marrow, fat cells and umbilical cord. My Dr does bone marrow for bone/joints, and fat for spine or nerve damage. Does not do umbilical cord because he's tested many many samples and all cells are dead by the time you get them.

I'm not really a big fan of seeking medical advice on the forum, but it does show different experiences and especially one's resolve to get back on the field.

Good luck to all.

jerrytodd01 and nicklos. if it's not too personal, about how much did it cost you for those procedures? i'm interested in it myself, but as beejaxtx said, insurance won't cover it.

I live in a very large Del Web. Knee issues are rampant. The Stem Cell vs. a replacement seems to be a coin toss. Have guys swear by and hate both options. Good luck. I don't need either as of now, but when my knees hurt VODKA works quite well.

badback, I have stem cell injection quotes for both knees from $7500 to $14K. Plus they recommend chiropractic and massage therapy for the out-of-whack back and hips. It comes down to what it's worth to you. Quality vs. quantity. Seeing alot of cell phone adds...going for the boomer $$$. Good luck.

Just my 2 cents. Research Ozone therapy. I'm 46 and was 45 when I had it done and 6 weeks later I had gone from missing league and tournaments to playing 7 games in my first tourney back and felt fine. I live in a border town so I was able to have everything done for under 400 dlls in Mexico.

The cost fore me was $6000. I went thru Southern Bone and Joint in Hattiesburg, Ms. The orthopedic(Dr.Ward) did the lipo and the injections. I got a shot in both knees, my rt. shoulder and IV for 3 hours. Started the lipo at 8am and came back at 12 noon, was done by 3:30.
