Runner hit by batted ball
I went back a year on this board but couldn't find this one...

Runner on third. Line drive down the third baseline. Runner tenses up and tries to lean slightly but is drilled by batted ball while he has both feet planted on the bag. The ball careens into shallow left field. Umpire calls it a foul ball strike because he said the runner was leaning toward the out of play direction... Help me out on this one...

I seem to remember a similar discussion in the last few months, but if in the umpire's judgement the part of him it hit was in foul territory, it was foul. I have only ever had that happen once. I kind of felt bad about it, because it was on strike two. He is standing there cringing awaiting the next hit. Fortunately it was an outfield hit nowhere near him.

as Nancy said.. and that's why runners on 3rd should just toe the bag and have the rest of their body in foul territory

Thank you. Absolutely. Hopefully we don't hear anything over that.

mck71, see what I mean.......[insert huge sigh and face palm here]

Why do I always feel like I'm the only adult in room?

Children, stop the bickering! ... This is an extreme annoyance to the membership and is the type of activity that causes entire threads to disappear without notice ... Thank you ...

When my team forces me to play 1st or 3rd, I mean lets me play 1st or 3rd. I always ask the runner if the batter likes him or if the runner owes the batter money. That usually determines that likelihood that I am going to be trying to get out of the way of a batted ball. What was the question.

I am impressed that any runner at any age is able to have both feet on the base and quickly "lean" out of the way and not fall down! A senior player doing this is amazing!
