Aug. 31, 2018 coop3636 514 posts | somthing very interesting Before SSUSA reads anything in to this, I NEVER care who we play. We play the SAME team in our first round robin game this year that we played in our first round robin game last year in Vegas. What are the odds? And to make it more interesting, we had to play them in our first bracket game last year. Go Figure And like I said, I never complain about who we play, we just like playing teams we have never seen before Coop3636 |
Aug. 31, 2018 DaveDowell Men's 70 4295 posts | Interesting .. I would guess the odds are about 1 in 36 (2.8± %) ... The match-up generation sub-routine is all "numbers" based, and the team names are overlaid as the last step, which is the first time I "see" the pairings ... Yes, you did play them in your first 2017 seeding game (L: 19-33), but not the first round of the bracket ... You both lost your first games and met in Elimination Bracket game A14, where they got you again (L: 14-21) ... Your goal is probably making the "The Third Time's a Charm" theory come through for you! ... Good luck! |
Aug. 31, 2018 BruceAZ Men's 70 155 posts | Interesting, Dave, if the generation sub-routine is all numbers based, how do you keep the local teams from playing each other in the seeding games? We're in Az and we play Az & Ca teams all year, it's nice to play against some East Cost teams during the seeding games and your generation sub-routine seams to do that. Thanks |
Aug. 31, 2018 Mulewhipper Men's 55 128 posts | Ask and you shall receive...Dave loves doing the math. |
Aug. 31, 2018 DaveDowell Men's 70 4295 posts | BruceAZ ... I assign half of the total entries each into East/West geographic regions/divisions and then instruct the software to play NO games within the division and ONCE each against the other side's teams ... If there's a USA National Championship game, I find it in the round sequencing sets and use that round of games for everyone ... If there's no USA game, I'll just scan the match-ups to try to catch something that can slip through, like a Missouri (West) team playing an Illinois (East) team, without much separation ... This is the fun part, seeing what I can do to basically eliminate the potential for "Scouting Reports" being much help! ... The fairly tricky part in this session was ... • A typical number of "later start requests"; • TWO 55-Major+ teams are sharing players, one with a 55-Major and the other with a 60-Major+, both playing at a different park; • Another 60-Major+ team is also sharing with a different 55-Major, requiring different game times; and • The 55-Major+ and 60-Major+ USA games have a common sponsor for the West representative and he requested different game times to allow attendance at both, at different parks of course! ... The good news is that the parks (Sunset and Arroyo Grande) are less than six miles apart, so this SHOULD work! To the best of my knowledge, I think all of those potential conflicts were resolved ... We'll see! P.S. - Mulewhipper: Your team is one of the teams in the "ride-sharing" scramble! ... Ha! Good luck! ... |
Aug. 31, 2018 coop3636 514 posts | Dave Thanks for the correction Like I said, I NEVER care who we play. I just thought it would make and interesting topic. I have one more question for you. I called today and they are trying to get me an answer, but maybe you can help Are we hitting our own balls this year or is SSUSA supplying them? (usually a dozen if I remember right) The reason I ask that in the rules on the bracket page, it is stated about the rule on retrieving balls WILL be enforced. That is not used when you hit your own balls... Just wondering because it makes a difference of what I bring to Vegas. Coop3636 |
Aug. 31, 2018 DaveDowell Men's 70 4295 posts | coop3636 ... I'll defer to whatever the office advises .. I DO know the WMC is a "The Rock" ball only event, if that factors into your decision on what to bring ... Am working from my home office today to reduce some of the "ambient noise" distractions, so I'll stay out of the middle on this ... Thanks! |
Sept. 1, 2018 Duke Men's 65 908 posts | I would not think that we are hitting our own softballs, and SSUSA to expect every team to go out and buy some Rock softballs. Traditionally, SSUSA will give each team some new Rock game balls. Whether that is 6 or 12 softballs, I cannot remember. If you do not want to retrieve home runs, then you can always buy more from the sign in area. Probably the more important question here, can a team use a Rock softball that they already have in their possession. If I recall, for the World Championships, the Rock ball being used has World Masters Championship on them, and half of the one's that I have, do not say that on the softball. Obviously, both softballs are the same. Andy Smith, USED2BE |
Sept. 1, 2018 coop3636 514 posts | Duke If SSUSA is providing them, your question about using a ball you already have is mute. coop3636 |
Sept. 1, 2018 Duke Men's 65 908 posts | coop3636, Not really a mute point, but a moot point. Just kidding with you! Although they are supplying some softballs, you could utilize the exact softball already in your possession, especially if, you do not care to retrieve any softballs that leave the field or purchase new additional ones. I am sure many teams have Rock softballs that are in new condition. Have a good tournament! Andy Smith, USED2BE |
Sept. 1, 2018 coop3636 514 posts | I appreciate the grammar help, I know it was supposed to be moot. I actually thought Dave would have corrected me..(I guess he is busy) Just to clarify: If they supply you with balls (6 or 12 as they have in the past) the retrieve rule is MOOT. If they supply ALL the balls, then you can NOT use your own because only balls that come from the umpire (SSUSA supplied) will be legal. I hope they give us 12 balls and let us hit our own. I would much rather have a chance to put a new ball in whenever I wanted to. If that is the case, unless they have them stamped this year, I would say the balls you have will work. ( if they are exactly the same as the ones they give out) The bad thing about hitting your own balls is that it makes me have to lug around a back pack full of balls all the time. If anyone wants to be a scorekeeper and lug around game balls, I have an open position. Pay is double of the highest contract on the team. Just my 2 cents Coop3636 |
Sept. 2, 2018 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | Coop3636, you know that you made me smile with the scorekeeper ad. I wish that I was going to be there because I would apply. 2 cents would be more than enough. I do miss being with a team. Dave can tell you that it is pretty obvious when I am in the park. I can definitely be heard. Yes, I track both teams' courtesy runners and lug equipment. |
Sept. 2, 2018 DaveDowell Men's 70 4295 posts | coop3636 ... LVSSA/SSUSA supplies six (6) new "The Rock" game balls to each team at player check-in ... The "..you hit 'em, you git'em.." rule is mentioned just to ensure that teams don't have the unreasonable expectation that we supply balls like at an all-you-can-hit driving range! ... You don't have to "git 'em" if you prefer to buy them from the tournament ... That's solely your option ... Good luck! |
Sept. 2, 2018 coop3636 514 posts | Thanks for the clarification coop3636 |
Sept. 3, 2018 VegasBob 66 posts | I think 6 balls will suffice for most teams, I can't see it working in the Worlds for a team coming out of the losers bracket when it's a huge bracket, say 60aaa, 14 games? That's a lot of games to stretch 6 balls. Maybe more are given out in that case? |
Sept. 3, 2018 DaveDowell Men's 70 4295 posts | VegasBob ... You're correct ... LVSSA/SSUSA gives out one new game ball for each game a team plays beyond their first six ... See your field directors as you get later in the brackets ... |
Sept. 3, 2018 coop3636 514 posts | Can I get the 3 balls owed to me from last year? (played 9 games) I wish I would have known that rule last year. That $15 could have made me millions on the craps table. I'll take a 2018 tee shirt instead..lol coop3636 |
Sept. 3, 2018 AJC Men's 60 217 posts | Coop, they go over that ( a new ball for each game after your first 6 games played ) at the managers meeting before each tourney has started. Dave was more than happy to take care of teams with this request. Dave , it was nice meeting you in Reno thus year, hope to see you in Vegas ! Tony |
Sept. 3, 2018 coop3636 514 posts | AJ I'm just teasing with Dave I go to the meeting every year. I am sure I received my extra balls last year. (and I think I bought an extra dozen) CYA in Vegas. coop3636 |
Sept. 4, 2018 DaveDowell Men's 70 4295 posts | No worries, AJC ... All is good with coop3636 and me ... A little good-natured teasing keeps things in perspective! ... Oh, and coop, "you must be present to win" on the free extra softballs! ... No do-overs! ... [grins] .. Good luck to you both! ... |
Sept. 4, 2018 AJC Men's 60 217 posts | Coop, im glad you were informed. I was only trying to help ! Best of luck to you in Vegas! Take care.... |
Sept. 4, 2018 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | AJC, do you mind if I root for your team? I won't be in Vegas this year, but I follow the games. Yes, I will also root for coop3636, but I have to look to figure out his team. Our team traveled to the World's many years, and I am a little disappointed how Indiana is represented since we stopped. It is the best tournament in the World. Maybe I should have run that scorekeeper ad except my mentor might have sent me an invoice. I always loved being involved with a team. I was for 20 years. Apparently they don't need a scorekeeper in Heaven...yet. |
Sept. 4, 2018 AJC Men's 60 217 posts | Hello Nancy !! Can you root for us, of course you can, we could use all the help we can get anyways lol. Im serious, if you ever are at the same park we are at i will introduce myself for sure. I know your a really good person who loves the game and has a wealth of knowledge and im sure some great stories. I know this is a little ( ok a lot of off topic ) from Coops thread but i had to say hello and thank you for you being you ! |
Sept. 5, 2018 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | Hello, AJC. I don't think that coop3636 would mind this on his thread; many subjects have been on it. I thought that he might have put the scorekeeper post out there because I had been teasing about putting a post out like all these players and teams looking. I do miss being with a team. I did a World's in Tennessee a couple of weeks ago. It was on the other end of the state from our friend, but he would have been welcome to heckle me a little, even a lot. Thank you for letting me be a fan. So far there is only one Indiana team and some friends of mine from Illinois; so I need someone to root for. I did not see your team listed under the ones so far; so I think that it is safe to assume that you are playing 50s in this. Thank you for the compliments. I hope that I am at least funny and like to research things because I want to know what is right. I do like helping people, especially in softball. I do have some pretty awesome stories. My Mom even laughed at the ones that I told her, and she really knows nothing about softball. I always say that softball ruined my life; softball saved my life because of the ways that it has touched my life. I look forward to meeting you. I will be west of the Mississippi and Rockies in a couple of months; so you never know. I wish that I was going to be at this tournament, but I think that my days of umpiring two solid weeks may be over at least until I retire. We both know a person that is reading this and getting a chuckle out of it. |
Sept. 5, 2018 coop3636 514 posts | Nancy You only have to be in Vegas for 4 days this year to keep score for TN Connection We are at BLD so you can stay in the AC and keep score from behind the glass with a cold beer or 5 I might even have to fake an injury to sit up with you coop3636 |
Sept. 6, 2018 Nancy Allen Men's 55 1438 posts | Darn, this message board thing works great. coop3636, you have no idea how much this made me smile after a long night of softball. So where do I need to catch the team jet? Honestly, I would seriously consider this since I miss it so much. I was with a team for 20 years and loved it. Unfortunately, I am the kind of scorekeeper that would never be happy anywhere but the dugout. I am one of those ones that will say out loud the next batters on their side, like 7, 8, 9, and or if hitter was consistently glove side on the shortstop. I have gotten a few outs on the other team's mistakes, rule violations, or once on an appeal that really didn't happen. I still got the out. It is a good story. I am very chatty and probably annoying mostly to the other team (unless I sound like someone's ex-wife on team am with). I had a guy tell me in Columbus a couple of weeks ago that he could never bat against our team because I figured out that he batted left then right and would announce that he goes both ways when he came to bat. I did double check with the office that scorekeepers have no region restrictions. I also checked your beer resume, and you are good and can handle 5. I prefer the bottle or can to the glass though. BLD is a beautiful complex. I should be there in November. Yes, I am at that point where softball means more to me than money. |
