International rules extra innings
Watched a 70+ game yesterday with a league using a compilation of rules. The game went to extra innings in which the rule states the team start the extra inning off with the next batter on second base. The batter had been using a designated runner throughout the game so my question is: Who is placed on second base to start the inning the batter or his designated runner?

oz.. as you stated league rules?? why would they put the next batter at 2nd? are you sure it wasn't the last batter? I would think since a player is allowed a designated runner for the game that the designated runner would go to 2nd

My thought exactly, I walked over to that set of diamonds just as the 'discussion' was ending so I'm not sure what the end conclusion was.

When the ITB rule places the player who was at bat when the previous inning ended, it's pretty clean ... If that guy always uses a CR, that option is available after he acquires 3B on his own ... The way we (and presumably other associations) do it makes more sense and eliminates "shenanigans" in manipulating who starts on 2B ... Would be interesting to know what the rationale might be in your league ...

Dave, hold on their my friend, it's not my league, I'm not quite ready for 70+ yet :-) I received this response from a man who umpired that league last year:

It is not listed in the Michigan Senior Softball League rules.

What is listed is; A regulation game shall consist of 9 innings with a two-hour time limit. No new inning can start after the time limit. If the score is tied at the end of the time limit, the game will be recorded a tie game.

At the league meeting Roger said that we would use the rule that the last batter would start from second base. I might be wrong but I think Roger said they were international rules.

So presumably there was extra time left otherwise, tie game. If I was umpiring I would of put the last batter at second. If he had a runner from home then he becomes the runner at second base.

That said, I know they have many special adaptive league rules in place since the age gamut runs from 70 to over 90, among those rules are runners from the strike mat for batters that require them.
