Bone On Bone
I have been doing some research on an alternate treatments for bone on bone knee. My surgeon wants to do a knee replacement, I would like to avoid surgery if possible. I have been reading about Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections, I haven't been able find any results if it is successful in treating bone on bone knee. Has anyone had the PRP injections, if so what were the results?
Capt Kirk
Note: I have had the gel shot and nerve block shots, they did give me some temporary relief.

Capt. Kirk, I had my left knee replaced almost three years ago. My orthopedic surgeon told me that the PRP does hold some promise. BUT, it only will be beneficial if you have some meniscus remaining. The whole idea of using the PRP is to get the meniscus growing so you don't have bone on bone. In my case it was too late because like you I was bone on bone and no meniscus was left. I have read several articles that suggest an artificial meniscus is being used in Europe but it will be a while before it is available for knees in the US. Good luck but with bone on bone but today I am not sure there are any other long term solutions other than a knee replacement. In my case I could no longer sleep so the replacement was the only option. Cannot run like a used to but I can sleep and play without pain. Good luck.

Mannjo, I just had the subchondroplasty procedure last week. I'm curious, how is it holding up for you? My Doc says expect a good 2-3 years and then will need a knee replacement. Do you wear a knee brace to help it hold up?

I had injections with Euflexa, 1 a week for 3 weeks, first the left knee, then the right knee for my bone on bone It was the only one my insurance would authorize, and it worked for the pain

Cz3114, I had it done two years ago this month. It is holding up fine. I would recommend anyone to discuss this option with their doctor before a knee replacement. After the procedure I didn’t see much difference. It took about four weeks ,as I did PT and then I could really see the difference. I could run without an issue..No swelling. I do not wear a brace, but I do wear a sleeve. My doctor told me the same thing. This is what they do before a knee replacement.

I've been bone on bone for about 6yrs & tried about everything to avoid TKR. In Jan i went for subchondroplasty & the doctor said he only gave me a 20% chance of working & i went for it anyway. He was right it didn't work! My opinion is,it is a very temporary fix! Oh, had TKR done in May & still going thru recovery!

I will probably have a TKR, my surgeon is skeptical on whether I can resume playing softball again. I have 2 teammates who have had TKR & they are playing again. Their suggestion was to have high flex knee implant with a shelf life of 20 yrs.

Capt Kirk, I would look at another surgeon if yours is skeptical about you playing again. Many people are doing it and I have not heard of one person (I am sure there are some out there) who are not playing after TKR. I had a partial replacement 7 years ago and have played ever since then. Next week, I go back in and get a TKR on that knee due to some issues with the 1/3 of the knee (and ligaments) that was not replaced. I hope to be back on the field hitting by April 2018.

Gary I had all the injections. The only real fix is replacement.I had one in 2010 .The 2nd was when we played with Hill in 2012. Every surgeon will tell not to play softball..I am having the original re replaced in January. You can play softball. The only problem is it will shorten the life of the replacement .The glue wore out and came loose. Google Makoplasty. Robotic Knee replacement.Less invasive.Shorter recovery. I played league ball 4 days a week plus umpiring..So I was ok with the seven years.Knee replacement has come along way .Only one night in the hospital. Jack R.

I would also suggest Cryotherapy as a possible help in some of these situations. Not sure about bone on bone, but I have had 2 ACL reconstructions on my left knee and had pretty good pain and some early arthritis. I tried Cryotherapy, where you freeze at a negative 200+ degrees for 3 minutes, and it definitely helped reduce the pain and inflation. What worked for me was I did it every day for 2 weeks and then scaled back to 3 times a week for the next 2 months. After that, I noticed a significant improvement. Some people say that Cryo helps all kinds of ailments, but that wasn't my experience. It definitely helped my knee, however. After the 2 months, I stopped doing it but still felt the benefits for the next 5-6 months. Cryo shops are popping up all over the place and hopefully the price of it will continue to come down. I don't think it is covered by most insurance carriers.

After doing some research, I am having knee surgery (not sure if it will be partial or total knee replacement). My surgeon will be using the Stryker Triathlon Knee replacement implant.Hopefully will be back on the field & playing in six (6) months)

WarEagle Mike,
I had my TKR in early December and I started playing in April. In April I was still taking it pretty easy and not even attempting to run full speed. I can give you several tips from my perspective. One, take all the pain medication they offer and take if BEFORE you start hurting from the surgery. In my case I got a nerve block for most of my entire leg so for 24 hours or so no pain. My doc was right though, take the pain medication before it really starts hurting and you will do fine. I also used a machine for a couple of weeks that I could hook my leg up to and it would automatically bend it. Believe it or not that was much better from a pain perspective than just laying on the couch. Do all of the rehab they recommend. You want to get as much bend and be able to straighten it as much as possible. Whatever you get within the first 90 days after surgery is all you will ever get. In my case I cannot run as well as I could before but I can sleep at night and I can run OK in a straight line. Turning and stopping are a little more difficult. Overall the TKR was the right thing for me to do. By the way, what happened to you guys? We did not see you at Vegas last year or this year. Hope you guys are still playing. If you want more details or want to talk you can call me at 314-805-7987 or email me at davebeckering@hotmail.com. Best of luck with the surgery.

Thanks Dave for the info....Wareagles broke up after winning the Worlds...a lot of drama...a good portion of the team are thinking about getting together again as a 65 team at the end of 2018....by the way,are you one of the Auburn grads on the team? you guys had a great team, both in talent and personalities. Hope to see you on the field this year, after I heal up that is, as I am currently playing with the Animals 65 Major team here in northern Ca.

Mike, Sorry to hear that the team broke up. I was not actually there for Vegas the year you guys beat us in the finals. My daughter got married that Saturday in Austin, Texas. I tried to figure out how to get there on Sunday but could not get there! I was not one of the Auburn grads. We tied for 5th this year in Vegas in 60 Major and lost our last game on Sunday by one run due to a base running mistake in the bottom of the 7th. The team is changing this year and I will be playing for a different Major team. Seems like 5 or 6 years is kind of the limit even for teams that generally get along well. Hope to see you on a field somewhere but not likely with us playing in different age groups. Best of luck with your TKR and I hope the surgery goes well.
