Oct. 28, 2015 bogie Men's 65 448 posts | Has anyone had L5 spinal fusion and returned to good playing form? I've been suffering from spinal stenosis of L5 for 2 years now. Spasms, and feet numbness since June. I am scheduled for Dec. 17 laminectomy and fusion however, I keep reading nightmare stories and wonder if I should continue on where at least I am mobile and can stand the discomfort. Has anyone had successful fusion and returned to playing and hitting? kennethvanbogaert@gmail.com is my email. thank you in advance. |
Oct. 28, 2015 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | I have a friend (55 ish), who had it last year in about Oct-Nov, and was playing this year in March. I need it for L3-5 and am putting it off cause my fusion in my neck isn't taking or doing well. That was C4-7. There are many different avenues to take research them, However some Dr's like mine are set to do Fusions. I have had the numbness for years in legs which is the back problem I also have it in my arms on occasion which is the neck. I still get this one. My word of caution would be 1. check other avenues. 2. Check you Dr out. 3. read up on alternatives you found. 4. if you have it do the PT for it. Stay healthy. |

The results were definitely mixed and the risks significant. You would certainly want to make sure your surgeon is highly-experienced (and successful!) in that exact procedure and the hospital/facility where you go is topnotch (to avoid complications and the very real threat of an MRSA infection). |
Oct. 28, 2015 taits Men's 65 4548 posts | Regarding the MRSA issue. It is nasty. I got it in a hospital while there and need to take a med before any all aops I not have sine then, that was in 2000. It stays with you for life as I understand it. It is not only the host & staff it is also visitors that can bring it to you. In 2014 I was in waiting for the Dr for anistesia briefing and he asked if I took the med, I had not been given it for the time frame needed and the op was cancelled until another week having taken it. |
Oct. 29, 2015 DOERBAUM Men's 55 86 posts | HI BOGIE, I MET YOU AT WOODLAWN A COUPLE OF MONTHS BACK AND WE TALKED ABOUT THIS VERY THING. I HAVE DONE A LOT OF RESEARCH ON THIS AS I HAVE HAD TWO PREVIOUS SURGERIES ON L-4, L-5. THE FOLLOWING WEB ADDRESS IS THE PLACE THAT I HAD CONSIDERED LOOKING INTO FOR A PROSTHETIC DISC REPLACEMENT SURGERY. http://www.germanspinespecialists.com/index.html THIS TYPE OF SURGERY IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE COMMONPLACE IN THE U.S. BUT DUE TOO THE DEAR OLD F.D.A., SOME OF THE BEST TECHNOLOGY IS NOT YET AVAILABLE IN THE STATES. (STILL MIRED IN FDA TRIALS) I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO HOLD OFF FOR NOW, BUT IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS IT WILL BE NECESSARY FOR ME TO DO THIS. I WISH YOU WELL IN WHATEVER CHOICE YOU MAKE. I KNOW FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WHAT A ROYAL PAIN IN THE ARSE LOWER BACK TROUBLE CAN BE!! STAY CONNECTED!! (ESPECIALLY IN YOUR LOWER BACK!) |

Oct. 30, 2015 glovedad 31 posts | Bogie and Taits, I am following this thread with a curious mind. I missed this entire season after being diagnosed with stenosis. Back spasms and hip to foot nerve jolts. I am going thro physical therapy in hopes of avoiding surgery? It sounds like my situation is not as advanced as either of yours. I hope to play again but do not know at this point what is going to happen. I have met with neuro-surgeon and was told to hold off on surgery and continue with the PT route. I wish I had information to offer you. Instead I am folllowing your post with interest and learning from what you guys have been through. I wish you well and do appreciate your post and the comments. |
