Feb. 2, 2015 Capt Kirk 541 posts | What is up with the stickum substance on the Dudley bats? I seem to be doing a lot of cleaning, does this substance improve performance, durability and? Cleaning it can be a pain, I usually use just soap and water but doesn't seem to work real well. Super Dave told me it was just an old age thing, OCB. |
Feb. 2, 2015 hemi racer Men's 65 237 posts | Yes, it is a performance enhancement going by Dudley. It's supposed to grip the ball for a mille-second when struck and give the ball more spine, thus more distance in theory. Haven't experienced much noticeable distances increase, but have seen an increase in knuckle balls. And yes you do need to take a damp cloth with you for clean up during games. Once I get home I clean mine up with bartenders friend and when dry tacky feel comes right back. Alan and some of the other bat guiros can explain it in more technical terms, but that's it in a nut shell. |
Feb. 2, 2015 Snot Nose Kid 67 posts | I believe the stickum is more of a gimmick than actual hitting aid because if that substance made any huge difference the bat would not have been approved. Also if you don't wipe the bat down with a damp cloth on the bat after each use the bat surface will become like any other bat because fine dirt or dust will cover it. |

You can do your own test. Hitting the ball at 5 o'clock is supposed to create more back spin which produces longer distance in the balls travel. Doesn't the ball knuckle when hit square ( 3 o'clock)? |

Feb. 2, 2015 ? 121 posts | According to Mike just making contact at any part of the ball with that sticky substance on the bat will make the ball exit like a hard hit knuckle ball? |

Feb. 3, 2015 hemi racer Men's 65 237 posts | Not for sure how much finish helps with distance, but Big Mike and I agree that it does produces more knuckle balls, which are harder to make a play on. Course his knuckles further distance than mine though. |
