Discussion: Coin flips

Hello I am a player on the Timberworks 70 Major plus team and take all the flips and I almost always take visitors on the flip. I have done this for Timberworks for the past 6 years and before that did it with MTC. I think it is an advantage to hit and score first, then let the other team chase you. I like it in the pre-lims because it allows maximum at bats and in the tourney because I want the Home team to feel they have to score to stay up with us. We have flip-flopped and run ruled many a team doing this. We recently played in the 65 major bracket in Phoenix and we were visitor every game, Truthfully, I don't know if we would have beaten the scorpions if they led off. Now everyone on our team doesn't agree with me, all of the time including Doug our manager. But, as long as we win they let me do this. I go to my catch phrase; Did you come here to hit or play defense? Now there are teams starting to take visitors against us...

Discussion: More on Major Plus

Webbie, to be fair to the 65 major plus teams, who were all very good and the Indiana team played exceptionally well to win the 65 major plus title. Here are the particulars:
-Timberworks had to play with 10 defensive players so numbers matched.
-We took the 5 runs per game (If we hadn't, we would not have won the tourney)
-The Indiana team played 6 games and sustained several injuries to their outfield.
-We were the winners bracket survivor and because McDowell had secured the 65 championship by beating the Texas Crush, (Texas was also really best up). So there was no reason for them to play us/Timberworks, so we didn't play. We each we champions of our age groups.

I won't add anymore comments because it just doesn't end well no matter well intended the intention..

Don, I didn't mean to disparage the Animals and what they accomplished last year, my only point was a very good major team was forced to play up because of the current processes. You guys were "forced" to play up with your "major team" and you played in 4 or 5 tournies as a major plus but after Reno you decided not to play in the Westerns or go the the Nationals. (That's what I referred to as packing it in. It is interesting Dave that you still have not gave any concrete resolutions to this Major Plus problem.
Here are a couple of suggestions:
1) have all the teams in the 65 and over sessions have the 11th fielder. This is a huge point of contention when we play down in age groups. This would allow 70 major Plus to play heads up with 65 majors.
2) Go to a one up home run rule in 65 and up. No one hits near the limit anyway especially with the balls being used. This would stop the complaint of major plus teams having a power advantage. This rule works very well in our Nor_cal tournies. The result of going 2 homers up is it is treated like a walk...Very effective.
3) Stop the medical exemptions, it is an abused process. There are Major teams who have 7+ former major plus players on it. I don't get it I have a bad knee as a major plus player then I get it fixed and I get an exemption to play down.

to r4pitch, when we were the rebels and then MTC we would often go east to play SPA, the world series, u trip. asa, ISA, ISSAA and even NSA and in the late 90's early 2000's teams like Fergies, the crush, mavericks various Texas teams would pound us. It was a great time to play senior softball. Those teams were the Timberworks of their time and they weren't the problem either.. Say something Dave/Terry that helps resolve the issue...

Thanks for your anticipated cooperation,

Discussion: major plus

Terry/Dave,
As you know the Major plus division is pretty much broken. In regards to at least the 65, 70 and 75 age groups. The net net there are too few teams in these categories. At the Westerns there were two 60 teams, two 65 teams and one 70 and 75 major plus teams in attendance. Now I am hearing that there will be only one 70 major plus team at the Nationals??? I realize there are too few teams to carry much $$ weight and the bracket is there mainly as a penalty box to kick up teams so the rest of the major teams don't bitch too loud. But, something has to be done. We should all play within our own age bracket and give whatever amount of runs to be "equitable". I also think we should play a one-up homer rule when "mixed" brackets play. I don't know, it is frustrating to care about being the best you can be when most teams want to sandbag to play in the lowest bracket they can get away with. Then if they win, they "dissolve" their team, or go the medical waiver process to reconnect with their former teammates. Or you can do what the Animals did in 70 Major Plus go to tournies and get wiped out, until the team packs it in. I suggested years ago a committee of major plus players should be formed to address the issues and revitalize the Major Plus headache. This is symptomatic of issues throughout senior softball.. For us on Timberworks playing against 65 major plus teams was good but should be an exception process. Not the ongoing norm, because in the end no one wins. See the last Western Championship.

I don't know when the last time we played a 70 major team but I think it is about time we did.

It used to be a badge of honor to be called Major Plus, now it seems like a curse...

Discussion: Runs given as equalizer, how given and when?

Dave, thanks for the correction on the number of players. But if we, a 70 major plus team play the 65 majors heads up 11 defensive players versus 10 players, get ready for the moaning and gnashing of teeth by the 65's over being an advantage for the 70's. It has happened before as you know...

Dave, there is a "quirky" exception and that is when a 70 team plays down in age to play a 65 team. The 70's already play with 11 defensive players. In Vegas we, Timberworks, a 70 major plus team were playing 65 major plus teams. So we had a choice to either take the runs or have 12 defensive players. We chose to take neither and played straight up with the 11 fielder. It never has made sense to me to take runs, especially, in seeding games. I would hate to say we won by 2 runs when they gave us 5??? Don't get it... But, we have played 65 major teams in the past and theoretically we would play them head-up because of the 5 year age difference but us being a major plus team. They see the 11th defensive player as an advantage already and see that they should either get an extra player or 5 runs to make it an even game.... What do you say?

Discussion: out or safe

The fielder was in the "short outfield" and made a great backhand catch of a low liner. I get the runner isn't out by getting passed, but Dave when he was knocked off first base by the batter/runner can he be tagged out? This is the question still not answered. Is the play still alive or by being knocked off the bag and the umpire stops play for injury before being tagged out by the defensive team. Can he be tagged out as he lays 5 feet from the bag or does the stoppage of play by the Ump for an injury give him the "right" to return to the 1st base?

Discussion: out or safe

Dave, something happened at the Winter Nationals I have never seen before and I can use your guidance. Runner on 1st Base, line drive hit to our "rover" he makes a great catch on the ball. The runner on 1B breaks for second, the ump makes the correct out call and the runner heads back to 1B. The throw comes to me at first, I am off the bag and the runner beats the throw back in. Now, the batter is running to 1B and collides with the returning runner and knocks him off the bag. As I go to tag the runner out the Umpire calls a dead ball and the play dead and awards 1B to the original base runner. I thought there would be no dead ball as the play was still going and also that there was a rule against contact with the advance runner by the runner from behind. The explanation was that in the interest of safety this was the correct call. Please advise..

Discussion: 1 and 1 curiosity

I hesitated in commenting on this topic because I am appreciative of the NCSSA and SSUSA's efforts to create a forum where we old guys can still play a game.

However, I do like the 1 and 1 count. I have played with and mainly against teams that "took till they got a strike" or pitchers who would take forever to pitch a ball. One guy we called the human rain delay, we never played a 7 inning game against some of these teams and often played only 5 innings. EGADS,

I wish NorCal would have adopted the 1 and 1 just to be in line with the with SSUSA. Because these are the tournies we are gearing up for and the NorCal tournies help us get sharp. The consistency would be of benefit to many players who 'Wait till they get a strike". I have always been a "try to hit the first good pitch batter". So, it won't change my approach.

I realize change is hard but to be consistent not only with SSUSA but also the younger players, who we do occasionally play in NorCal. The back and forth is confusing.

I also play for the Omen 70 team after 4 years with Timberworks. As SLI stated congrats to the Scorpians, they deserved the victory. There were four really good teams in Phoenix; Gonzalez, Scrap Iron, R&R and the Scorpians, it was a blast to compete with them and anyone of those 4 could have won that tourney. If there wasn't a Timberworks I would suggest to Dave that all of them move to major+. There are teams that compete in the Major category that really don't have a choice to win a big tournament, with teams like these there. But since Timberworks isn't going anywhere, at least this year, the Arizona Ancients have to bear the responsibility to battle with them. Although I really feel these teams could compete with Timberworks but you have to step up and take on the challenge. I saw Gonzalez score over 30 against TW, it was an impressive effort and victory.. I really saw a significant tiering in the Majors, 5 strong teams and 5 that were not as strong but going for it. I look forward to playing these "kids" in future tournies, Remember take it easy on the old guys...…

to the ssusa staff, you neglect to mention that we won the southwest title against a team who didn't take the runs and I think we came back from 8 and 5 run deficits in the last inning to win competitive games. I don't know if we can say we could have came back from 10 and 13 run deficits !!! Can you? In Reno, we lost games and didn't give the 5 runs to the Rebels. So, be careful with your data. There have been teams that have dominated for years and now this ++ rule is instituted? In 2017 R&R lost every game they played in Major+ tournies, yet we are the only team to give them runs? The assumption you are erroneously making is that everything is static and it never is. Teams get better and worse, it has always been the case that the competition addresses this issue and not somebody assigning a rule to try to even competition. I thought Major + was the last bastion of pure competition, guess not..... Too bad... What you need to figure out is how do you help the major teams "graduating" to Major+. I would love to be on a committee to help address this REAL issue...

Discussion: Major++++

I never thought I would have to write this but I do, I am a member of the Timberworks 65 Major ++ Team (that's right Major ++). This means we have to give all Major + teams 5 runs, if they wish them. This is based on us having a great year last year (one great year)In the Westerns we gave a very good team 5 runs and it didn't feel right to anyone. I have played "competitive" softball for over 30 years. Being on Cal burgers, Dan Smiths, Cal Rebels, MTC, and now Timberworks (all won "Major +" national titles). We played against Nothdurf, Maroadi's, Fergies, the Florida and Texas teams, Harrisons, and the Seacrest Mavericks.. Believe me, we took our lumps but never got or whined for runs. You just competed and got better. I guess I am a dinosaur in the game today, where people rather play down than get better. Doug is a great sponsor who covers our tournies, uniforms and bats, we pay the rest. I cannot ever see myself taking runs and shaking hands with Don Clatterbough at the end of a game we won by getting runs. Maybe, we should just start giving participation awards!!!

The elephant in the room is the Major Teams that are kicked up so the money making divisions, Major and AAA, stay somewhat calm. Major + is the proverbial penalty box. The major complaint I hear is Major + teams have too much power for them to compete. I suggest that these teams have the option to play with a one up homer rule against the "power" teams or go to a 3 homer limit like we used to have in ASA 35 and 40's. Something needs to be done because the number of teams in the Major + 65, 70's and up divisions is dwindling. There has to be an effort to grow these fields.

I have come to realize I don't really mind giving the runs but don't ever ask me to take them....

Discussion: DARK CLOUDS IN 65 MAJOR PLUS

I am on the Timberworks team and if I thought our manager put in an Rock on purpose for one second, I would have walked off that field right then, followed by 15 teammates. I have grown to have too much respect for our opposition, people that I have played with and against for years. Major Plus is a very small community and usually close knit. I know Doug. he is honest and has a million things going on and he just screwed up, it happens.... I am sorry the mistake happened and wish it was caught after our first hitter, so we would have had an out and we could have moved on....

Discussion: Rock Ball in Vegas

Webbie, is right the ball had a lot of action on it. (would hate to be an outfielder) But we won the 65 major plus and in our bracket no one hit their limit of HR's in a game. Although, some of the balls got out of the park in a hurry. The balls did jump at BLD's on the second hop, but I thought it was more the rock hard outfield rather than the ball. So, I prefer the rock as a hitter because you get a response on the bat when you hit it. Now for the 55 and below age brackets those guys can power anything out of the park. There was great competition in our bracket with 6 teams. It was a refreshing change from the usual 2 to 3 team brackets...
