I`m 78 and fell off of my bicycle on a wet railroad track and tore the Labrum and Supraspinatus and Ifraspinatus tendons away from the bone. At 78 surgery was not in the cards. I saw the head Orthopedic surgeon at Cleveland Clinic after four months of self rehab at a gym. After some physical testing, he concluded that I could throw, but warned me that I only had two tendons attached and that the two separated tendons would not self reattach. After Ten months of gym work and use of the rubber bands, I can throw again, albeit very gently and not real strong as yet. In conclusion to all the above comments. Strengthening the entire shoulder with weights and other devices such as the rubber bands, will allow you to continue to play the game we all love. |

I`m 78 years old and tore my supraspinatus and infraspinatus completely from the bone. I chose not to have the surgery because of the rehab time and pain that would be associated with the operation, plus the consideration of the time left to play this game we love. Upon weighing all the personal factors I reached that decision. Now after nine months of personal rehab,I was able to throw a rubber ball against the wall at full speed. Thinking I was good to go, I played second base in a practice game and on a double play ball threw to first. There was pain and in the next inning, the opportunity arose again, this time there was great pain where the tendon should have been attached. Needless to say, the arm is not strong enough yet. Will I ever be able to throw? We will see. If I were younger, the decision would have been different. The best of luck to you. |

I fell off my bicycle on march 5th and I instantly knew I was in trouble because I fell directly on the right shoulder. I thought I could rehab this injury on my own even though I could not lift my arm. After three month of only slight improvement, I got an MRI which indicated I tore two tendons completely from the bone. I`m 78 years old and decided not to have surgery because of the recovery time and considering I only have a few more years to play at best. I played this past season in a league and on a tournament team, but could only play first base. The past two and a half months I was in the gym three hours a day six days a week. The incremental improvements have been very small, but I was improving. I can now throw as well as I could in the recent past. now to conclude,,, cortisone will not repair torn tendons, but strengthening the other muscles in that shoulder have allowed me to throw again without surgery.. |

| Sept. 22, 2017 cuda65 | Topic: General and miscellaneous Discussion: Throwing arm has gone bad. Dancer, first of all, how old are you? Plus, you need to get an MRI. The reason I ask your age, is because I`m 78 and completely tore two tendons and opted out of surgery. Mine were rotator cuff tendons and after seven months, my shoulder is starting to feel better. A buddy of mine pulled a bicep tendon which resulted in a Popeye bicep. But he can still throw. An MRI is really the only way to determine the true extent of your injury. If it`s only partially torn, you can rehab it. I`m not trying to be a Doctor, just trying to help. |

I met with the head surgeon at Cleveland Clinic a Dr. Iannotti. I`ll summarize our 15 minute consultation. He started with, "What`s your problem"? I said I cannot throw. He said " That`s not your problem" He expected me to say that I was in constant pain or could not move my arm. I told him I had 90% range of motion. He told me to get on the table. Put your hand behind your head . Put your hand behind your back. Squeezed my shoulder. "Does that hurt" No. Pushed against my hand in various positions. "You can throw" I beg your pardon? You can throw. I said I can`t throw. He said have you tried it? I said no. He said ,"I will not operate" The next day I went to the gym and threw a hand towel against the wall.. I can throw. His final comment was, " you can live with a partial liver and one kidney and you have two completely torn tendons that will never grow back. If you tear the others, you have a serious problem". I`m 78 years old how many more years can I play at a competitive level? Instead of SS or over the middle, I can play second base. I play on a very good 80 team out of Michigan and I will live with the restrictions my accident created. Thanks again guys. Cuda |

I recently played in a Tournament in Columbus , Ohio and I of course could only play first base. With a man on first and a lefty up to bat, he hit a ground ball to me and I bowled the ball to the SS covering the bag. Same Tournament with bases loaded, a right hand batter hit me a one bouncer and I again bowled the ball home to force out that runner. Key question: Are the gains at my age worth the effort necessary to recover the ability to throw? I will play 80 next year. If I play another 3 years is it worth it? You guys were in your 50`s and 60`s and had 20 years of playing in your future. Think about that. By the way, Columbus had those rubberized infields, so bowling for dollars was easy. |

First of all I want to thank SSUSA for providing the forum that will allow players to ask for opinions and allow various guys to contribute their experiences that can be so helpful for making a more thoughtful decision. Specifically , so far,Ib16, Texas Transplant, and Turbobob have given valuable advice. BUT guys consider this I`m 78. Am I willing to give up at least six months for a recovery that may not happen. I presently have 80 to 85 % full range of motion. I ride a motorcycle both here in Cleveland and Texas. Texas Transplant made a great point: when you weigh the pluses and minuses, the decision becomes more difficult. I play for a 75 team and an 80 team out of Michigan and my hitting has not suffered. I can play first base and live with the fact that I will never be able to throw as before. I meet with the head of the Orthopedic Surgery department at Cleveland Clinic on July 3rd. Let`s see what he says. Remember, these are complete tears of the two tendons. Thanks guys, I`ll keep you informed. |

Fell off of my bicycle on wet railroad tracks and sustained a rotator cuff tear. Specifically a complete tear of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus tendons. That was four months ago and I just recently got an MRI which indicated the specifics. I`m 78 years old and in good condition/health. I normally played SS or over the middle, but now I only can play first base. I`m concerned about the chances of success of surgery weighed against the pain and recovery time. I love this site because you get immediate and expert opinions that reflect years of experience of playing and umpiring games. I just completed a survey from SPA and one question was how would I improve the SPA website. My answer was to create a message board similar to SSUSA`s. I check this message board everyday to keep up to date on the latest topics. |

Bases loaded..outs unimportant..Batter hits a screamer down the third base line. Hits the runner while on the base in fair territory. Ball bounces away... My view is that it is a fair ball and the ball is in play. Umpire immediately called dead ball. Runner from third scores and the batter is awarded first base. all runners advance. The defensive third baseman was deep on the grass. What say you experts? The umpire making the call is a head umpire and very seasoned. |

I understand your concerns and have sympathy for your situation, but there is hope on the horizon if you can just hang on a little longer. I`m not being sarcastic, there will be more 75`s moving up and those older 80`s should have more options in the future. I still want to play the game as long as I feel I can be competitive. All the stuff you mentioned about 60 teams and 65 teams really doesn`t make a lot of sense in that there are many many teams in those above mentioned categories. In the 80 division East of the Mississippi there are only 4 80 teams that are within 7 or 8 hour drives from where I live. The older teams that you mention as being weaker have the option to get younger players and the older players can in this case move up to the 85 age group. I see it as a win win situation. Also, by adding the younger players, you improve the overall play for that division. |

Chuck here...Yes this has had a very positive effect for me in that I can now play on an 80 team as well as my old 75 team. I`ll be playing with a team out of Michigan and I feel I can help that 80 team. If SSUSA had not changed their ruling on this, I would not be able to go to Vegas or TOC in Florida. At our age, this give us more opportunities to play the game we love. tomorrow is not guaranteed. I enjoyed playing with you guys and hope you continue to play at a very high level. |

SPA allows a 78 year old to play 80 and it seems unfortunate to me that at 78, I will have to wait two years to play on a team registered with SSUSA. How many more healthy years do I have left? It`s not like a 65 team that has relatively unlimited number of players to choose from. Is this organization considering a change in that age requirement? |
